Sanya brushes off diamond loss

NOTHING can blur Sanya Richards' focus.

Not even the loss of a US$20,000 diamond brooch.

The US sprinter felt the jewellery ping from her chest, bounce off her knee and fly off the track during her 200m heat yesterday but the 22-year-old just kept running to win it.

揑 know what my goals are when I step on the track and nothing was going to distract me even if US$20,000 just fell off my chest,

Favourite Wariner eases into 400m final

US star Jeremy Wariner scorched to an effortless 44.34 seconds yesterday to reach the 400 metres final as speculation mounted about his world record attempt.

Wariner, 23, who is targeting Michael Johnson's 1999 mark of 43.18, established a clear lead by the second bend before easing down the final straight to finish ahead of Bahamas' Chris Brown and Trinidadian Ato Modibo.

US team-mates Angelo Taylor and LaShawn Merritt also dominated their heats as the Americans eyed a clean sweep in tomorrow's final.

Merritt was the quickest qualifier, timing 44.31 to win heat three. Taylor cruised to 44.45 in the opening heat ahead of Johan Wissman, who lowered the Swedish national record to 44.56.

Wariner, 23, has long threatened Johnson's record and is a huge fan of the super-fast Osaka track. The Texan set the season's best time of 43.50 earlier this month, placing him joint third on the all-time 400m list.

Six national records, eight personal bests and 15 season's bests in the opening rounds have heightened anticipation over Wariner's record bid.

Isinbayeva takes swipe at rivals

RUSSIAN pole vault queen Yelena Isinbayeva took a swipe at her competitors after failing to set a new world record on the big stage here.

The glamorous 25-year-old needed just three jumps to defend her world title but could not beat her own mark of 5.01 metres, set two years ago in Helsinki.

Isinbayeva said she could go higher if she had more competition.

Britain抯 Ohuruogu hits back at critics after victory

CONTROVERSIAL athlete Christine Ohuruogu hit back at her critics after returning from a drugs ban to win Britain's first ever women's world 400 metres title.

Ohuruogu, who completed her one-year ban for missing dope tests only this month, led a surprise British one-two in the event ahead of Nicola Sanders and Jamaica's Novlene Williams.

Rare feat: Britain抯 Christine Ohuruogu poses with compatriot Nicola Sanders after their one-two finish in the 400m final.

The Commonwealth champion, 23, said she could have the last laugh after answering a barrage of negative coverage in the British press with a personal best of 49.61 seconds.

Liu Xiang hits the jackpot

Jeremy Wariner and Liu Xiang lived up to their reputations yesterday by winning world championship gold medals as Allyson Felix successfully defended her 200m title, but records remained intact.

American Wariner had Michael Johnson's world mark of 43.18 seconds in his sights but narrowly missed it to cross the line in 43.45, his fastest time ever.

Team-mate LaShawn Merritt took silver in 43.96, a personal best, with another American Angelo Taylor getting bronze to put three United States athletes on the 400m world podium for the first time.

Palestinian flounders in wrong event

THREE days of travel is not the best way for an athlete to prepare for the world athletics championships but for 16-year-old Palestinian Gharid Ghrouf the odyssey was just the start of her woes.

The teenager arrived in Osaka at the end of her circuitous trip from Gaza to find that due to a clerical error by her federation she had been entered in the wrong event.

Instead of competing in the 100m and 200m she found herself lining up in a 800m first-round heat against the great Maria Mutola.

揑t was very difficult I had been training for 100m and 200m but suddenly I had to do the 800m which is something very different for me,

Africans set to shine on final day as Wariner eyes his second gold

AFRICAN athletes bid to maintain their dominance in middle and long distance racing today as Jeremy Wariner backs up for a second gold medal in the 4x400m.

Eight gold medals will be decided on the final day of the world athletics championships, with six on the track and two in the field.

When it comes to distance running, Africa has few peers. Nine of the last 10 5,000m world champions have been African and the best Kenya and Ethiopia have to offer will be in contention for the men's title.

With Ethiopian title favourite Sileshi Sihine failing to show for the heats after his draining 10,000m silver medal, Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge is the man to beat after clocking 13:33.37 in his heat.

Another Ethiopian, Abraham Cherkos Feleke, is also hitting form.

Australia's Craig Mottram, who became the first non-African to medal in the event when he took bronze at the last championships two years ago, could spring another surprise.

Kenyan-born American Bernard Legat, the unexpected 1,500m champion, is also in the field.

I抳e never been so nervous, says champion Liu Xiang

CHAMPION hurdler Liu Xiang admitted he had never been so nervous after claiming China's first ever men's world athletics title.

The 110 metres star triumphed after getting off to a slow start and breaking the golden rule by looking across at his rivals before the finish.

Liu Xiang pipped America's Terrence Trammell in 12.95 seconds to claim another first for Chinese men after his 2004 Olympic title. The time was outside his world record 12.88 set last year.

揑 have never been so nervous, even more nervous than in the Athens Olympics,

Gay gets sprint treble

TYSON Gay tore up the track to complete a rare sprint treble at the world championships yesterday and help the United States to the 4x100m crown.

Champion in the 100m and 200m, Gay became only the second man to achieve the feat at a single world championships when he teamed up with Darvis Patton, Wallace Spearmon Jr. and Leroy Dixon to match compatriot Maurice Greene's 1999 feat.

The American men ran 37.78 seconds to beat Jamaica into silver, just as their women had done minutes earlier when Allyson Felix collected her second gold of the championships.

Brad Walker chipped in on a fantastic night for the US, becoming the first American to win the men's pole vault at a world championships but the night belonged to Gay.

Resipi Gay

MULANYA 100m. Kini 200m.

Lagat makes history

BERNARD Lagat made history by becoming the first man to win both the 5,000m and 1,500m world titles yesterday, as Jeremy Wariner and Allyson Felix added more gold to their bulging collections.

Kenyan-born Lagat, who gained US citizenship two years ago but only recently became eligible to compete for them after a mandatory wait under international rules, muscled his way past Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge to win on the line.
