Karate akhiri tanpa emas

Malaysia to set up backup karate squad
By LIM TEIK HUAT

KUALA LUMPUR: A national back-up karate squad is to be established for the first time to ensure there is enough representation at the senior level in the future.

National head coach P. Arivalagan has got approval from the National Sports Council (NSC) to establish the back-up junior squad.

He said he hoped not to see the day when where there is no one good enough to be picked to fight in a particular weight category. Arivalagan has his worries, with most of the current senior national exponents already past their mid-20s. The only exception is Doha Asian Games silver medallist L. Kunasilan, who is 20 and now fighting in the below-55kg weight category.

The back-up squad will be based at Bukit Jalil and will be in full-time training. 50 exponents with ages ranging from 16-18, who were short-listed at the National Junior Championships in Kuala Lumpur last month, attended the initial phase of selection on Tuesday.

The squad will be trimmed to 25 and to 10 by the end of the selection process in August.

Arivalagan said he already had the plan in his mind and was only waiting for the NSC to give the go-ahead to fund the programme.

"We wanted to select the best and that is why we will trim it down to 10.

"The difference is the exponents will be training full-time the whole year and we will place them at the Bukit Jalil Sports School. They will go for certain selected competitions to keep them on their toes.

"In the past, the junior exponents only train on an ad-hoc basis before they go for the World and Asian Junior Championships.

"We have always had representatives fighting for medals in all the events each time we go for the major tournaments and we want to keep it that way.

"In this instance, we do not have to worry if someone decides to retire from the national team in the future."

The aim to set up a back-up squad is also to form a strong team come 2010, when Malaysia will host the World Junior Championships for the first time.

Although karate failed to deliver a gold medal as targeted in the Doha Asian Games last year, they still came back with four silver medals and three bronzes - the most number of medals by a particular sport.

Yoke Wai, Vasantha strike gold in Bulgaria

By LIM TEIK HUAT

PETALING JAYA: Karate exponents Lim Yoke Wai and Vasantha Marial sounded warnings to their rivals ahead of the Asian Championships next month by winning their respective kumite (sparring) category in the KOI World Cup in Varna, Bulgaria, on Saturday.

Yoke Wai beat Alenaiza Oran of Kuwait on sudden death after a tie of 2-2 in the men's below 75kg final. Yoke Wai, who bagged Asian Games silver medal in Doha last December, cleared four bouts en route to the final and his success made up for the narrow defeat of R. Puvaneswaran.

The hope was on Puvaneswaran to deliver a gold for Malaysia. But the seasoned campaigner only managed a silver in the men's below 65kg category. He was the champion in 1997 and 2004.

Vasantha became the first Malaysian woman to strike gold in the KOI World Cup, winning the below 53kg competition. She won three bouts and went on to beat Russian Savitskaia Anna 4-1 in the final.

Power play: Lim Yoke Wai and Vasantha Marial (inset) won kumite
titles for Malaysia in the KOI World Cup on Saturday.

Victory is a big boost for Vasantha ahead of the Asian championships, which Malaysia will host, after the disappointment of missing out on the gold in the Doha Asiad.

The gold medal-winning efforts by Yoke Wai and Vasantha meant that the team achieved a two-gold medal target set by the Malaysia Karate Federation (Makaf).

Malaysia also took another silver and four bronze medals on Saturday.

G. Yamini contributed a silver in the women's below 60kg category while younger sister Vathana took bronze in the women's above 60kg category.

Asian Junior Championships gold medallist G. Yugneswary ensured a 100% medal success for the Malaysian women's kumite exponents when she took bronze in the below 53kg category.

Two more bronzes came from Ku Jin Keat and Lim Lee Lee in the men's and women's individual kata respectively.

Only L. Kunasilan finished empty-handed on Saturday. The Doha Asiad silver medallist lost to Ferozi Saeed of Iran in the quarter-finals of the men's below 55kg category.

Coach P. Arivalagan was satisfied with the performances of the Malaysian exponents.

揑t was the first major championship for them this year and I wanted to assess their form, which I felt is more important,

By LIM TEIK HUAT

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia came from behind to beat hosts Bulgaria 2-1 in the women's team kumite (sparring) final of the Kobe Osaka International (KOI) World Cup karate championship in Varna on Sunday.

The trio of Vasantha Marial, G. Yamini and G. Yugneswary made it the first time a Malaysian team has won the kumite team gold in the World Cup.

It was also the third gold for Malaysia after Yoke Wai and Vasantha had emerged champions in the men's below-75kg and women's below-53kg categories of the individual kumite competitions on Saturday.

S. Mahendran also took home a bronze in the men's below-80kg individual kumite competition on Sunday.

Malaysia finished the two-day championship with a total medal haul of 3-2-5. The silvers came from R. Puvaneswaran (men's below-65kg) and Yamini (women's below-60kg). Skuad karate-do peraga aksi cemerlang raih dua lagi emas
