The one place where a flag flies all day, never goes up or comes down, and does not get saluted, is the moon.

Earth is the densest planet in the solar system and the only one not named after a god.

One year on earth is 365.26 days long. One day is 23 hours, 56 minutes, and 4 seconds long. The extra day in a leap year was introduced to compensate for the discrepancy in the Georgian calendar.

Earth is slowing down - in a few million years there won't be a leap year.

The Moon


The average distance from the Moon to the Earth is 384,403 kilometers (238,857 miles). The Moon's diameter is 3,476 kilometers (2,160 miles), which is 25% of Earth's diameter.

At full moon the earth is between the moon and the sun; at new moon the moon is between the sun and the earth.

The first photograph of the Moon was taken in 1840 by J.W. Draper using a 12 cm reflector with an exposure time of 20 minutes.

The Moslem calendar today is still based on the Lunar calendar, where the average month has 29.5 days.

Only about 59 percent of the Moon's surface is visible to us here on earth.

Chili pepper, (also spelled chile, or chilli) is the fruit that originates from the Americas. It was discovered in 1493 in the Caribbean by Columbus.


The most common species of chili peppers are: bell peppers, paprika, jalapeños, cayenne, tabasco, the hottest peppers such as habaneros and Scotch bonnets, rocoto peppers, and chiltepin. The shapes, color, taste and pungency of the species vary depending on the country of their origin.

Their pungency is caused by capsaicin and four related chemicals, collectively called capsaicinoids. The "heat" of chili peppers is measured in Scoville units.

Laika, the Space Dog



The dog Laika, the first living creature to orbit the Earth who paved the way for humans in space was a stray dog found in the streets of Moscow.

Stray dogs were chosen for the experiment because the scientists believed they would be able to tolerate the extremities of space flight better than other dogs. Female dogs were used because of their temperament and the fact that they did not need to lift their leg to urinate.

The space dogs, whose weight did not exceed 6 kg and height 35 cm were prepared for space mission and adapted to the conditions in the pressurized space cabins by the Soviet Institute of Aviation Medicine. They were kept in gradually smaller cages for up to 15-20 days and were trained to eat a special high-nutrition gel that would be their food in space.

The Pill Facts and Figures



The birth control pill was introduced to the public in the early 1960s. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved it for clinical use on May 9, 1960. Today female oral contraceptives, colloquially known as the Pill, are the most popular method of contraception, a quarter of women aged 16-49 rely on it.

Birth control pills are synthetic hormones (progestin and most often also estrogen) that prevent ovulation. The contraceptive pill, however, can be prescribed for reasons other than contraception, for example, menstrual disorders, hormonal regulation in infertility treatment, acne.

The Pill is usually estimated to be over 99% effective. However, that figure relates to correct and regular Pill use. Actual failure rates are estimated to run at around 6%.

Gutenberg was not the first to invent the printing press~~

Johannes Gutenberg is often credited as the inventor of the printing press in 1454. But neither printing nor movable type was actually invented by Johannes Gutenberg, nor did he print the first book. The Chinese actually printed from movable type in 1040, but later discarding the method.

Even before printing books from movable type, the Chinese used wooden blocks to print Budhist writings by hand on scrolls in the 9th Century. While there are no surviving examples of the Chinese printing presses of the 11th Century, the oldest surving printed book on record is the Budhist Diamond-Sutra of 868 AD. Gutenberg was unaware of the Chinese printing methods.

In 1450, Gutenberg went into partnership with the wealthy Johann Fust and Peter Schöffer. In 1454, Gutenberg printed a Turkish calendar and the famous 42-line Bible, of which he printed some 180 copies. The next year he quarrelled with his partners, they won a lawsuit against him, and he lost control of his printing business, causing him financial ruin.

After his financial ruin, little is known of Gutenberg. Near the end of his life, the elector Adolph von Nassau took pity and made him a member of his court. He died in Mainz in 1468.

Although Gutenberg did not invent printing, his experiments made printing more practical. He used sand molds to cast his type and changed the woodcut presses to take printing of type pages. He did invent movable type for the Western world. Gutenberg's method of using type endured almost unchanged for five centuries. Today he is the most famous printer of all time.

Before Johannes Gutenberg invented his printing press in 1454, there were only about 30,000 books throughout the whole of Europe, nearly all Bibles or biblical commentary. By 1500, there were more than 9 million books. Today there are more than a trillion books.


The Gutenberg Bible
It is believed that about 180 copies were printed. Significant parts of 48 copies still survive. The British Library has two complete copies of the Gutenberg Bible and a small but important fragment of a third copy. One copy (shown) was transferred in 1829 to the British Library with the library of King George III (1738-1820).

What's your type???

In some ways, every person's blood is the same. But, when analyzed under a microscope, distinct differences are visible. In the early 20th century, an Austrian scientist named Karl Landsteiner classified blood according to those differences. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for his achievements.
Landsteiner observed two distinct chemical molecules present on the surface of the red blood cells. He labeled one molecule "A" and the other molecule "B." If the red blood cell had only "A" molecules on it, that blood was called type A. If the red blood cell had only "B" molecules on it, that blood was called type B. If the red blood cell had a mixture of both molecules, that blood was called type AB. If the red blood cell had neither molecule, that blood was called type O.

If two different blood types are mixed together, the blood cells may begin to clump together in the blood vessels, causing a potentially fatal situation. Therefore, it is important that blood types be matched before blood transfusions take place. In an emergency, type O blood can be given because it is most likely to be accepted by all blood types. However, there is still a risk involved.

A person with type A blood can donate blood to a person with type A or type AB. A person with type B blood can donate blood to a person with type B or type AB. A person with type AB blood can donate blood to a person with type AB only. A person with type O blood can donate to anyone.

A person with type A blood can receive blood from a person with type A or type O. A person with type B blood can receive blood from a person with type B or type O. A person with type AB blood can receive blood from anyone. A person with type O blood can receive blood from a person with type O.

Because of these patterns, a person with type O blood is said to be a universal donor. A person with type AB blood is said to be a universal receiver. In general, however, it is still best to mix blood of matching types and Rh factors.

WHO INVENTED TOOTHBRUSH????

The toothbrush as we know it today was not invented until 1938. However, early forms of the toothbrush have been in existence since 3000 BC. Ancient civilizations used a "chew stick," which was a thin twig with a frayed end. These 'chew sticks' were rubbed against the teeth.

The bristle toothbrush, similar to the type used today, was not invented until 1498 in China. The bristles were actually the stiff, coarse hairs taken from the back of a hog's neck and attached to handles made of bone or bamboo.

Boar bristles were used until 1938, when nylon bristles were introduced by Dupont de Nemours. The first nylon toothbrush was called Doctor West's Miracle Toothbrush. Later, Americans were influenced by the disciplined hygiene habits of soldiers from World War II. They became increasingly concerned with the practice of good oral hygiene and quickly adopted the nylon toothbrush.

Some other interesting toothbrush facts:

The first mass-produced toothbrush was made by William Addis of Clerkenwald, England, around 1780.
The first American to patent a toothbrush was H. N. Wadsworth, (patent number 18,653,) on Nov. 7, 1857.
Mass production of toothbrushes began in America around 1885.
One of the first electric toothbrushes to hit the American market was in 1960. It was marketed by the Squibb company under the name Broxodent

How much water does a camel's hump hold?
     
    None.
A camel's hump does not hold water at all - it actually stores fat. The camel uses it as nourishment when food is scarce. If a camel uses the fat inside the hump, the hump will become limp and droop down. With proper food and rest the hump will return to normal.

The hump is not used for water storage, but camels can go for long periods of time without water. They drink large amounts of water - up to 20 gallons at a time. This water is stored in the animal's bloodstream.

    Energy conservation and visual assurance.
Why do geese fly in a V? Because it would be too hard to fly in an S! Just kidding. Scientists have determined that the V-shaped formation that geese use when migrating serves two important purposes:

First, it conserves their energy. Each bird flies slightly above the bird in front of him, resulting in a reduction of wind resistance. The birds take turns being in the front, falling back when they get tired. In this way, the geese can fly for a long time before they must stop for rest.

The second benefit to the V formation is that it is easy to keep track of every bird in the group. Fighter pilots often use this formation for the same reason.

There are four basic principles for reading and writing Roman numerals:

1. A letter repeats its value that many times (XXX = 30, CC = 200, etc.). A letter can only be repeated three times.
2. If one or more letters are placed after another letter of greater value, add that amount.

LXX = 70 (50 + 10 + 10 = 70)

The Trachtenberg Speed System of Basic Mathematics

Multiplication
Finding the product of multiplicands of any length by small multipliers is accomplished using a set of rules. One works from right to left from digit to digit of the multiplicand, writing down the digits of the product. The rules use only addition, subtraction, doubling, and halving.

Here are the rules:

Multiplier   Rules
0 Zero times any number at all is zero.
1 Copy down the multiplicand unchanged.
2 Double each digit of the multiplicand.
3 First step: subtract from 10 and double, and add 5 if the number is odd. Middle steps: subtract from 9 and double, and add half the neighbor, plus 5 if the number is odd. Last step: take half the lefthand digit of the multiplicand and reduce by 2.

4 First step: subtract from 10, and add 5 if the number is odd. Middle steps: subtract from 9 and add half the neighbor, plus 5 if the number is odd. Last step: take half the lefthand digit of the multiplicand and reduce by 1.

5 Use half the neighbor, plus 5 if the number is odd.
6 Use the number plus half the neighbor, plus five if the number is odd.
7 Use double the number plus half the neighbor, plus five if the number is odd.
8 First step: subtract from 10 and double.
Middle steps: subtract from 9, double, and add the neighbor.
Last step: Reduce the lefthand digit of the multiplicand by 2.

9 First step: subtract from 10.
Middle steps: subtract from 9 and add the neighbor.
Last step: reduce the lefthand digit of the multiplicand by 1.

10 Use the neighbor.
11 Add the neighbor to the number.
12 Double the number and add the neighbor.

When the sum exceeds 10, write down the last digit, and carry the first digit. If you are taking half an odd number, use the integer quotient and ignore the remainder of 1.


Examples:

1. Multiply 901247 by 2.

0 + 7 * 2 = 14. Write down 4, carry 1.
1 + 4 * 2 = 9. Write down 9.
0 + 2 * 2 = 4. Write down 4.
0 + 1 * 2 = 2. Write down 2.
0 + 0 * 2 = 0. Write down 0.
0 + 9 * 2 = 18. Write down 8, carry 1.
1 + 0 * 2 = 1. Write down 1.

Answer: 901247 * 2 = 1802494.


2. Multiply 901247 by 3.

0 + (10 - 7) * 2 = 6. 6 + 5 = 11. Write down 1, carry 1.
1 + (9 - 4) * 2 = 11. 11 + [7/2] + 0 = 14. Write down 4, carry 1.
1 + (9 - 2) * 2 = 15. 15 + [4/2] + 0 = 17. Write down 7, carry 1.
1 + (9 - 1) * 2 = 17. 17 + [2/2] + 5 = 23. Write down 3, carry 2.
2 + (9 - 0) * 2 = 20. 20 + [1/2] + 0 = 20. Write down 0, carry 2.
2 + (9 - 9) * 2 = 2. 2 + [0/2] + 5 = 7. Write down 7.
[9/2] - 2 = 2. Write down 2.

Answer: 901247 * 3 = 2703741.

These rules allow one to dispense with memorizing multiplication tables, if that is desired. Even better, it gives a way to help memorize them, by allowing one to work out the answer by rule if one cannot remember it by rote.
Once the multiplication tables are memorized, using multipliers of two digits is learned. Finally, using multipliers of any length is learned by the "two-finger" method.

Addition
The method advocated here involves the following principle: "Never count higher than eleven." If any running column total exceeds 11, subtract 11 and put a tick mark in that column. When you reach the bottom, write down the running total, and under it write the number of tick marks. Now add these two rows using the strange rule of adding the two numbers in any column and the neighbor tick number. Write down the last digit and carry the other digit, if any, working right-to-left.


Example

Why does 0.9999... = 1 ?
This answer is adapted from an entry in the sci.math Frequently Asked Questions file, which is Copyright (c) 1994 Hans de Vreught (hdev@cp.tn.tudelft.nl).
The first thing to realize about the system of notation that we use (decimal notation) is that things like the number 357.9 really mean "3*100 + 5*10 + 7*1 + 9/10". So whenever you write a number in decimal notation and it has more than one digit, you're really implying a sum.

So in modern mathematics, the string of symbols 0.9999... = 1 is understood to mean "the infinite sum 9/10 + 9/100 + 9/1000 + ...". This in turn is shorthand for "the limit of the sequence of numbers

    9/10,
    9/10 + 9/100,
    9/10 + 9/100 + 9/1000,
    ...."


One can show that this limit is 9/10 + 9/100 + 9/1000 ... using Analysis, and a proof really isn't all that hard (we all believe it intuitively anyway); a reference can be found in any of the Analysis texts referenced at the end of this message. Then all we have left to do is show that this sum really does equal 1:

   Proof: 0.9999... =     Sum         9/10^n
                     (n=1 -> Infinity)

                    =  lim               sum      9/10^n
                     (m -> Infinity) (n=1 -> m)

                    =  lim           .9(1-10^-(m+1))/(1-1/10)

Not formal enough? In that case you need to go back to the construction of the number system. After you have constructed the reals (Cauchy sequences are well suited for this case, see [Shapiro75]), you can indeed verify that the preceding proof correctly shows

   0.9999... = 1

   Thus     x = 0.9999...

Why Does 0! = 1

Usually n factorial is defined in the following way:

n! = 1*2*3*...*n
But this definition does not give a value for 0 factorial, so a natural question is: what is the value here of 0! ?

A first way to see that 0! = 1 is by working backward. We know that:

                1! = 1
     2! = 1!*2
                2! = 2
     3! = 2!*3
                3! = 6
     4! = 3!*4
                4! = 24
            

We can turn this around:
                4! = 24
     3! = 4!/4
                3! = 6
     2! = 3!/3
                2! = 2
     1! = 2!/2
                1! = 1
     0! = 1!/1
                0! = 1


In this way a reasonable value for 0! can be found.
How can we fit 0! = 1 into a definition for n! ? Let's rewrite the usual definition with recurrence:

      1! = 1
      n! = n*(n-1)! for n > 1
      

Now it is simple to change the definition to include 0! :
      0! = 1
      n! = n*(n-1)! for n > 0
      

Why is it important to compute 0! ?
An important application of factorials is the computation of number combinations:

               n!
   C(n,k) = --------
            k!(n-k)!
         

C(n,k) is the number of combinations you can make of k objects out of a given set of n objects. We see that C(n,0) and C(n,n) should be equal to 1, but they require that 0! be used.
                      n!
   C(n,0) = C(n,n) = ----
                     n!0!


So 0! = 1 neatly fits what we expect C(n,0) and C(n,n) to be.
Can factorials also be computed for non-integer numbers? Yes, there is a famous function, the gamma function G(z), which extends factorials to real and even complex numbers. The definition of this function, however, is not simple:

          inf.
   G(z) = INT x^(z-1) e^(-x) dx
           0


Note that the extension of n! by G(z) is not what you might think: when n is a natural number, then G(n) = (n-1)!
The gamma function is undefined for zero and negative integers, from which we can conclude that factorials of negative integers do not exist.

0^0 = ?????

According to some Calculus textbooks, 0^0 is an "indeterminate form." What mathematicians mean by "indeterminate form" is that in some cases we think about it as having one value, and in other cases we think about it as having another.

When evaluating a limit of the form 0^0, you need to know that limits of that form are "indeterminate forms," and that you need to use a special technique such as L'Hopital's rule to evaluate them. For instance, when evaluating the limit Sin[x]^x (which is 1 as x goes to 0), we say it is equal to x^x (since Sin[x] and x go to 0 at the same rate, i.e. limit as x->0 of Sin[x]/x is 1). Then we can see from the graph of x^x that its limit is 1.

Other than the times when we want it to be indeterminate, 0^0 = 1 seems to be the most useful choice for 0^0 . This convention allows us to extend definitions in different areas of mathematics that would otherwise require treating 0 as a special case. Notice that 0^0 is a discontinuity of the function f(x,y) = x^y, because no matter what number you assign to 0^0, you can't make x^y continuous at (0,0), since the limit along the line x=0 is 0, and the limit along the line y=0 is 1.

This means that depending on the context where 0^0 occurs, you might wish to substitute it with 1, indeterminate or undefined/nonexistent.

Some people feel that giving a value to a function with an essential discontinuity at a point, such as x^y at (0,0), is an inelegant patch and should not be done. Others point out correctly that in mathematics, usefulness and consistency are very important, and that under these parameters 0^0 = 1 is the natural choice.

The following is a list of reasons why 0^0 should be 1.


Rotando & Korn show that if f and g are real functions that vanish at the origin and are analytic at 0 (infinitely differentiable is not sufficient), then f(x)^g(x) approaches 1 as x approaches 0 from the right.
From Concrete Mathematics p.162 (R. Graham, D. Knuth, O. Patashnik):


Some textbooks leave the quantity 0^0 undefined, because the functions 0^x and x^0 have different limiting values when x decreases to 0. But this is a mistake. We must define x^0=1 for all x , if the binomial theorem is to be valid when x=0 , y=0 , and/or x=-y . The theorem is too important to be arbitrarily restricted! By contrast, the function 0^x is quite unimportant.

As a rule of thumb, one can say that 0^0 = 1 , but 0.0^(0.0) is undefined, meaning that when approaching from a different direction there is no clearly predetermined value to assign to 0.0^(0.0) ; but Kahan has argued that 0.0^(0.0) should be 1, because if f(x), g(x) --> 0 as x approaches some limit, and f(x) and g(x) are analytic functions, then f(x)^g(x) --> 1 .
The discussion of 0^0 is very old. Euler argues for 0^0 = 1 since a^0 = 1 for a not equal to 0 . The controversy raged throughout the nineteenth century, but was mainly conducted in the pages of the lesser journals: Grunert's Archiv and Schlomilch's Zeitshrift. Consensus has recently been built around setting the value of 0^0 = 1 .

For example, we could say that 1/0 = 5. But there's a rule in arithmetic that a(b/a) = b, and if 1/0 = 5, 0(1/0) = 0*5 = 0 doesn't work, so you could never use the rule. If you changed every rule to specifically say that it doesn't work for zero in the denominator, what's the point of making 1/0 = 5 in the first place? You can't use any rules on it.

But maybe you're thinking of saying that 1/0 = infinity. Well then, what's "infinity"? How does it work in all the other equations?

Does infinity - infinity = 0?
Does 1 + infinity = infinity?

If so, the associative rule doesn't work, since (a+b)+c = a+(b+c) will not always work:

1 + (infinity - infinity) = 1 + 0 = 1, but
(1 + infinity) - infinity = infinity - infinity = 0.

You can try to make up a good set of rules, but it always leads to nonsense, so to avoid all the trouble we just say that it doesn't make sense to divide by zero.

What happens if you add apples to oranges? It just doesn't make sense, so the easiest thing is just to say that it doesn't make sense, or, as a mathematician would say, "it is undefined."

Maybe that's the best way to look at it. When, in mathematics, you see a statement like "operation XYZ is undefined", you should translate it in your head to "operation XYZ doesn't make sense."
