Hockey: Australians lift Sultan Azlan Shah Cup with 3-1 win

IPOH Australia won the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament for the fifth time when they outclassed Malaysia 3-1 in the final played at the Azlan Shah Stadium Sunday.

The Australians' slick team work resulted in three field goals while Jiwa Mohan netted Malaysia's only goal in the last minute.

Australia were also winners in 1983, 1998, 2004 and 2005.

Hockey: Korean test for women squad
By : Ranjini Thangaraju

FIVE matches against South Korean top clubs await the national women抯 hockey squad in their preparation for Asia Cup in September and the Korat Sea Games in December.

The squad, under the wings of new head coach Yahya Atan, will fly to Seoul next month for a 10-day playing tour.

The stint will help expose the Malaysian players to more Asian hockey, said Malaysian Hockey Federation (Women抯 Section) secretary S. Shamala.

"South Korea is one of the fastest growing hockey teams in Asia, and are ranked third in the region.

"Most of the South Korean national players are part of these clubs, so we expect some quality matches," she said.

The women will also compete in the Asia Cup from Sept 1-9 in Hong Kong, which is the qualifier for the 2010 World Cup.

"The top three teams from the Asia Cup will make the cut for the World Cup, and South Korea will be one of the teams we should look out for if we want to secure a berth," added Shamala.

The Malaysian women will embark on a three-week European tour after the Asia Cup, which will complement their 2008 Beijing Olympic qualifier in April next year.

"We have confirmed matches in England, Netherlands and Germany so far," said Shamala.
