Full flight: Pandelela misses out on a spot on the podium after an error.

BARCELONA: Pandelela Rinong paid dearly for a wrong move and only ended sixth as she missed out on a chance to bag a career first individual medal in the women's individual 10m platform final in the World Championships in Montjuic Municipal Pool yesterday.

The fabulous Barcelona skyline overlooking the pool was nicely set up for Pandelela to add a second world championships medal to the first she won partnering Leong Mun Yee in the women's 10m platform synchro final on Monday.

Pandelela, who was fifth twice in Rome (2009) and Shanghai (2011), amassed 314.15 points for ninth spot in the semi-finals.
There was high hopes of her ending on the podium after she was placed third overall after the two routine dives.

However, Pandelela decided to re-take her armstand routine - the third dive and this cost her a two-point deduction each from the seven judges, earning only 54.40 as a result. Her confidence was rattled and her hopes diminished as she earned 56.00 for the fourth. Pandelela recovered with a 76.80 for her fifth and final dive to complete her outing in Barcelona with 334.55 points.

Si Yajie showed she is the new platform star for China by denying her team-mate Chen Ruolin a successful defence of the title won in Shanghai by scoring above 80 three out of five times to take gold with 392.15 points. Ruolin, the reigning Olympic champion, settled for silver with 388.70 points while Iuliia Prokopchuk of Ukraine came from behind to snatch bronze with 358.40 points.
