Sarawak wushu exponents rewarded
By JACK WONG

KUCHING: Gladys Molling, who did Sarawak proud in both the national and international wushu championships, has been rewarded by the state government.

For the gold medal she won in the recent inaugural World Junior Wushu championship held in Kuala Lumpur, which attracted exponents from 40 countries, she was rewarded with RM3,000 cash.

In addition, she was richer by another RM3,000 for winning three gold medals in the National Junior Wushu championship in Penang.

Molling was among 14 wushu gold medal winners who received the cash incentives from the state Sports Ministry here Wednesday.

Alvin Foo Phang Shen and Kimberly Goh Yuen Yuen also received RM3,000 each for gold medals they won in the world championship.

The other 10 gold medal winners in the national championship were each rewarded with RM1,000. They were Belinda Liew Cho Hung, Ho Jong Chan, Fiona Tan Mei Yuen, Ho Jong Xian, Jocelyn Narong, Alvin Foo, Hong Chee Hua, Gary Tay Soon Joo, Chan Soon Cong and David John Au Kerk Wui. State Assistant Minister for Sports Dublin Unting, who presented the cash rewards to the recipients, said the cash was given to recognise outstanding athletes.

``We want to show them that we care,'' he added.

Unting said state athletes from other sports who won medals in national and international championships would also be rewarded similarly.

Malay exponent joins the national junior squad
By AFTAR SINGH

Ali: Secured a spot in the eight-member national junior squad.

KUALA LUMPUR: Two years ago Ali Arami Azahar created history by becoming the first Malay male exponent to win the gold medal in the National Junior Wushu championships.

And this year, the 17-year-old Malaccan created another first by winning a place in the national junior squad.

The Wushu Federation of Malaysia (WFM) president Datuk Seri Kee Yong Wee said that they have included Ali in the squad because he has the potential to become a top exponent.

揌e has proven himself in local meets and deserves a place in the eight-member national junior squad.

揌owever, the national junior coaches want him to switch his event from changquan (bare hand) to other disciplines in wushu because he needs to broaden his skills,

Ali happy to have made national squad
By AFTAR SINGH

KUALA LUMPUR: It was a dream come true for Malay exponent Ali Arami Azahar when he was selected for the national junior wushu squad.

The 17-year-old Ali said that he had been trying to earn a place in the junior squad since creating history by becoming the first Malay male exponent to emerge as a champion in the National Junior Championships in 2005.

揑 was quite frustrated at not being considered for the team two years ago. However, I was delighted to know that I am among eight exponents who have been picked for the national junior squad,

Wushu: Double joy for teen Tai
By LIM TEIK HUAT

Fierce pose: Tai Cheau Xuen won the nanquan gold at the national wushu championships yesterday

KUALA LUMPUR: It was a day of double joy for Negri Sembilan wushu exponent Tai Cheau Xuen yesterday.

Not only did she win the nanquan (southern style boxing) gold medal in the national wushu championships at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium in Cheras but she also found out later that she has been selected for SEA Games in Thailand in December.

The 16-year-old posted 9.13 points to finish ahead of team-mate Wong Yik Yan (8.68). Johor exponent Ee Hui Ping took bronze on 8.34.

Cheau Xuen certainly had reasons to be delighted with her inclusion in the squad for the Korat Games. She is one of two exponents from the national junior squad to make it to the 12-member team.

The other junior is Ho Man Hua, who comes in as a replacement for injured Asian junior champion Koo Chee Zhong. But Man Hua failed to win the men's nanquan gold medal for Malacca yesterday. He settled for silver behind Sarawakian Lau Hui Wei.

Cheau Xuen comes from a family of five siblings and all of them are wushu exponents. But she is the only one who has represented the country in international championships. She competed in the Asian Juniors in South Korea in July but did not win any medal.

揟he selection for the SEA Games is a pleasant surprise. I never expect to get the nod because there are many good exponents in the national junior squad. It will be my second international competition and I do not have high expectations other than to gain experience,

Wushu: Siti scores a first
By LIM TEIK HUAT

KUALA LUMPUR: Sanshou (freestyle boxing) exponent Siti Zaishbila created history for Terengganu when she won the state's first-ever gold in the national wushu championships at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium in Cheras yesterday.

Terengganu did not even have an association until early this year and in their debut in the national championships made their present felt in sanshou with a haul of 1-2-4.

In the 11 finals contested, Siti was the easiest winner. She was handed the gold in the 65kg category without having to fight in the final because Kuala Lumpur's Chong Yin Yin came down with cramps and conceded a walkover.

But for Siti, who won two bouts on Monday to advance to the final, it was still a well-deserved gold medal. She had quit her job to prepare for the national championships.

The right way: Terengganu sanshou coach Wee Teck Jien giving pointers to his charge Siti Zaishbila, who took the 65kg gold in her debut in the national wushu championships yesterday.

揑'm happy to deliver a gold medal for Terengganu. I did not expect this because this was my first competition in sanshou,

Wushu: Foo Mun stuns favourite, KL champions
2009/08/25
Ajitpal Singh

NATIONAL back-up exponent Foong Foo Mun upset his more illustrious opponents to bag the taijiquan (taichi) gold for Negri Sembilan in the National Wushu Championships at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium in Cheras yesterday.

The 16-year-old mesmerised the judges with his polished display to chalk an upset win over national elite exponent Lee Yang by earning 9.55 points.

Lee Yang, the World Games bronze medallist, earned silver for Perak with a 9.49 total followed by Negri's Khaw Hong Lim on 9.48.

Foo Mun, who won gold in the same discipline at the World Youth Championships in Bali last December, was not expecting a gold medal yesterday.

"This is my maiden senior competition since becoming active in this sport five years ago. I'm satisfied with my performance because I did not make any mistakes in taijiquan," said Foo Mun.

Foo Mun had earlier won silver in the taijijian (taijisword) event behind Sarawak's Loh Jack Chang.

Another Negri exponent, Tai Cheau Xuen took her tally to three gold medals after bagging the nangun competition with 9.50.

Cheau Xuen, also a gold medallist at the World Youth meet last year, had won the nanquan and nandao titles for Negri on Sunday.

The Negri team emerged as the top state in the taolu (bare hands and weapons) category for the first time by racking in 11 gold medals.

Kuala Lumpur, thanks to their sanshou exponents, were overall champions with a haul of 17 gold, six silver and seven bronze medals.

Only one out of the 17 gold medals won by Kuala Lumpur came from taolu.

Traditional wushu powerhouses Malacca and Sarawak took home 10 and six gold medals this time.
