Angel beats Harrington in the playoff

HAMILTON (Bermuda): US Open champion Angel Cabrera wanted to beat an elite field of major champions at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf, but it did not escape the big-hitting Argentine that this was an exhibition.

That explains why he hit driver at every turn, with mixed results.

It put him in dire trouble on the opening hole, leading to a triple bogey that left him five shots behind. And it rescued Cabrera at the end of an exciting afternoon at Mid-Ocean Club, with two booming drives on the par-five 18th.

One led to an eagle that put him in a playoff with British Open champion Padraig Harrington.

Power play: Angel Cabrera holds the trophy after winning the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Bermuda on Wednesday.

The other led to a two-putt birdie for an unlikely victory on Wednesday.

Argentine Vancsik takes control in Portugal

VILAMOURA (Portugal): Argentine Daniel Vancsik has a chance to make amends for his dramatic collapse in Madrid last week after snatching the second-round lead in the Portugal Masters on Friday.

A six-under 66 gave Vancsik a 14-under total of 130, two shots better than Martin Erlandsson of Sweden (68), Spain's Alvaro Quiros (66) and Britons Steve Webster (66) and Ross Fisher (64).

The 30-year-old Vancsik led last week's Madrid Open for the first three rounds but missed out on his second European Tour title of the year when he ran up a nine at the par-four fifth on the last day.
