In Helen抯 own words:

揟he public must learn that the blind man is neither genius nor a freak nor an idiot. He has a mind that can be educated, a hand which can be trained, ambitions which it is right for him to strive to realise, and it is the duty of the public to help him make the best of himself so that he can win light through work.擺/b]

salam dexa ...

we need inspired person or charismatic leader like dexa to help achieve the OKU's mission & in the same time bridging the gap between normal societies with OKU's societies... without people like dexa and other respected person, the stigma and prejudices towards OKU will increase .... and thus "the bridge" is less meaningful .... thanz dexa and other people involve in order raise the current issue to the govt and maybe NGO...

as long i live, i try to contribute as best possible as i can  ...

Paralysed but she aims high
By : Melissa Darlyne Chow and R. Gerijah

GEORGE TOWN:She has been paralysed for the last 14 years after falling off a bicycle.

Norhayati Mohd Yusoff gets the attention of others who enrolled for the
distance learning programme at Universiti Sains Malaysia yesterday.

But Norhayati Mohd Yusoff, 27, is determined that nothing is going to stop her from getting a higher education.

The gutsy woman and another disabled person were among 1,732 people who enrolled in a distance learning programme at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) yesterday. She is taking up literature and hopes to be a translator in future.

Asked what motivated her to take up the programme, Norhayati, from Bachok, Kelantan, said she had always wanted to get a degree and set an example for her seven siblings.

For 58-year-old Jayalakshmi Karrupaya, the distance learning programme has given her the chance to pick up where she left off 38 years ago.
Married soon after she finished secondary school, family commitments kept her from pursuing higher education.

But now that she is finally able to do so, the mother of four is making the most of the opportunity provided by the programme.

She is taking up literature and intends to pursue her Masters in Singapore.

Jayalakshmi, who used to teach in a national-type primary school in Johor, is looking forward to achieving her dream of becoming a professor one day.

USM抯 e-learning portal, under the School of Distance Education, offers a self-learning module, intensive courses and video streaming.

The school抯 dean, Omar Majid, said the portal was an ideal education tool.

"Students will also be able to follow the lectures online and if they miss it, they can watch the video recording," he added.

The portal, a two-month pilot project, will be used for the first time when classes begin on June 29.

what an inspiration story - and hopefully this is what will inspire and
motivate us to achieve as high as we can --
there's nothing whatsoever can stop us from getting what
we focus on - and being disabled certainly won't stop her
from keep trying to achieve higher education -

tahniah! -

Learn to spot signs of autism

KUALA LUMPUR: Providers for young children, including parents and kindergarten and primary school teachers, should be trained to recognise signs of autism.

Wanita MCA chief Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen said yesterday that the children would benefit from early identification of the neurological disorder, which would lead to intervention and consequently providing them with a better life.

揥ith rehabilitation, they can learn how to manage themselves, and parents play an important role,
