Meet The Gaffer

Roy Keane was named Sunderland manager in August 2006, taking over from Niall Quinn, the club's chairman.

In doing so Keane took his first manager's job after retiring from football at the end of the 2005-06 season as a Celtic player.

Keane, born in Cork, Ireland, is a former Republic of Ireland captain who played for Nottingham Forest, Manchester United and Celtic in an outstanding career.

Keane retired from playing professional football on Monday June 12, 2006, after receiving medical advice on a long-standing hip problem.

The former midfielder played for Rockmount and Cobh Ramblers in Ireland before he moved to Forest.
