Allardyce Unfazed By Shearer TalkWed 02 Jan, 12:17 AM

Under-pressure Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce has shrugged off speculation he is set to be replaced by Alan Shearer.
Allardyce has come in for increasing flak since taking over a StJames' Park in the summer, a poor run of performances prompting somefans to call for his head.
He was given a vote of confidence by chairman Chris Mort, wholaughed off rumours on Monday that owner Mike Ashley was consideringsacking the 52-year-old.
Allardyce said: "I do not have any worries or concerns as far as they (Mort and Ashley) are concerned.
"The pressure that has been put on them as well as me, theyunderstand it is outside influences trying to exert pressure on them.It is all part of the game."
Asked if he felt St James' Park hero Shearer was casting a shadowover him, he said: "It has always been there and it always will be.There is nothing more to say on the subject."
Allardyce also insisted his transfer window spending has not beencapped and revealed he has already begun compiling a shopping list.
"I am putting players forward to the chairman and decisions will be made from there," he said.
"The players that might be available and are available are being discussed on a regular basis, day to day.
"I was never given an indication of a budget in the summer and it will be similar in this window."
As for possible January departures from St James' Park, Allardyceadded: "It would have to be a very lucrative offer for anyone to moveaway from the club."

Newcastle v Man City preview
Faye should play for Magpies, but Smith doubtful

Newcastle take on Manchester City at St James' Park desperate for a victory to lift them up the league.

The Magpies have slipped to 11th in the table after taking only one point from their three Christmas and New Year games so far, with their draw at home to Derby followed by losses away to Wigan and Chelsea.

But under-fire boss Sam Allardyce has been handed a boost with the news that Abdoulaye Faye is fit enough to play.

Faye had left Stamford Bridge with his arm in a sling following Saturday's defeat but a subsequent scan has revealed there is no break and so he should continue in the holding midfield role, in which he impressed against the Blues.

Return

Michael Owen could make the starting line-up after the England striker made a pleasing return when coming on as a substitute against Chelsea after six weeks on the sidelines with a torn thigh muscle.

Full-back Stephen Carr is also available after overcoming a hamstring problem.

But on a less positive note, Newcastle skipper Alan Smith is a major doubt after suffering severe concussion following a clash of heads with Faye against Chelsea.

And Joey Barton is also unavailable after being remanded until 3rd January by Liverpool City Magistrates Court over an allegation of common assault and affray.

Win

City, who have been linked with a transfer window move for Owen, will also be looking for the win after drawing all three of their festive games against Villa away and Blackburn and Liverpool at home.

They looked tired during their goal-less match against the Reds on Sunday and have again had less time to prepare than their opponents for this game.

New signing Nery Castillo can not play as his paperwork has not been processed in time, but he should be available for City's next game against West Ham in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.

But on the plus side, City have no new injury problems following the hectic Festive programme, although England Under 21 star Michael Johnson could still be out after missing the last three games with a groin injury.

Newcastle feel the pressure after the 2-0 defeat at home to Manchester City.

Newcastle 0-2 Manchester City
Nigel Pearson[Newcastle assistant manager]: "When you get your chances you have totake them. We've suffered from not being as good as them in either box.It is disappointing for us because at times tonight we were bright butit's not happening for us at the moment. Too much went against us... weshould have had a penalty as well. When things aren't going for youthey tend to carry on not going for you.
"We know we can come out of it, they'll stick with us and we can show them what we can do."
Sven-GoranEriksson: "Of course I am very happy - it has been a long time since welast won a game away from home and it is a very nice way to start 2008."

United look to see off Madrid for Valencia star
According to today's Daily Telegraph, Newcastle United face competition from Spanish Champs Real Madrid for Valencia skipper David Albelda.

Themidfielder was told by Valencia manager Ronald Koeman he could leavethe club in January and Newcastle were one of the first names to bementioned about possibly signing him.

The Magpies could sure dowith a quality midfielder and Albelda would be a quality signing by SamAllardyce but when Real Madrid come knocking very few refuse.

The30-year old 46 caps for Spain and it is unclear yet wheter or not hewill be aloud leave Valencia on a free transfer or not. I wouldpersonally love to see Albelda join the Premier League and I think hewould be a huge success here.

Butt urges Newcastle to stick with Allardyce
      tribalfooball.com      -      January 03, 2008

Nicky Butt has urged Newcastle United's owner Mike Ashley to stick with manager Sam Allardyce.

"Everybody knows as well as I do that managersare looked upon by results but things will never improve unless Sam isgiven time," said Butt.
"This club can show you that. Since I've beenhere I've had four managers. Someone has got to say 'This is themanager we're going to stand by, in good times and bad times' andhopefully get the rewards for it.
"If you look at all the big teams, ManchesterUnited and Arsenal, and other teams that are doing well, like Everton, they've stood by the managers for a long time. If we do that, I'm surewe'll do it right.
"It's not my job to say it. We're all playingfor the manager and the staff. We know our results and the way we playare going to reflect upon him. We're all fond of him. We all want himto be here and I'm sure - hopefully - he'll get that time."
