Newcastle look to consolidate on improved formSat 08 Dec, 12:50 AM

LONDON (Reuters) - Newcastle United will attempt to build on the encouraging performance that earned them a draw with Premier League leaders Arsenal on Wednesday when they host Birmingham City on Saturday (3 p.m.).
A much-improved Newcastle, who had been under mounting pressurefrom angry fans, conceded an early goal to Emmanuel Adebayor onWednesday before Stephen Taylor scored an equaliser to give Newcastlejust their second point in six matches.
They are 11th with 19 points, five more than 12th-placed Birmingham, who will not be easy as they showed on new manager Alex McLeish's debut at Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday when they snatched a 3-2 injury time win.
Newcastle manager San Allardyce admitted he had felt thepressure after two successive home defeats but said Wednesday'sperformance had come as a relief and they must now go on to consolidateon their new-found confidence.
"We've got to produce what we produced tonight againstBirmingham City, no less, and try to get that win to kick us off forthe next three or four games," Allardyce told Sky Sports.
Arsenal, away to Middlesbrough on Sunday (1:30 p.m.), and champions Manchester United, at home to Derby County on Saturday (3:00 p.m.), meet two teams mired in the relegation zone, looking to swat them aside in their race for the title.
Arsenal, on 37 points from 15 matches, hold a four points lead over second placed United.
Third-placed Chelsea, two points behind United, are at home on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) to Sunderland, who hauled themselves out of the danger zone last weekend when Anthony Stokes scored a stoppage-time goal for a 1-0 win over Derby.
Liverpool, who with Arsenal are the only unbeaten teams in the league, are fourthwith 30 points and enjoying a prolific run that has brought them ninegoals in their last three league games. They travel to Reading on Saturday (5:15 p.m.).
Fifth-placed Manchester City, also on 30 points, visit a Tottenham side (Sunday 3:00 p.m.) impressivein attack but like a sieve at the back and languishing in 16th placewith 12 points.
Portsmouth's visit to Aston Villaon Saturday (12:45 p.m.) brings together two sides on 27 points andlooking to keep in touch with the coveted top five places for Europeancompetition.

Premier League - Barton stuns Fulham  Eurosport -  Sat, 15 Dec 19:27:00 2007

An injury-time Joey Barton penalty gave Newcastle a 1-0 win at Fulham in the Premier League in a dreadful match at Craven Cottage.

It was Barton's first Premier League goal since April, that strike also coming against Fulham but in the light blue shirt of Manchester City.
Itwas yet another late goal needlessly conceded by Lawrie Sanchez' Fulhamside, teenage right back Elliot Omosuzi giving away a penalty with apoor tackle on Alan Smith on his 19th birthday.
The match until then had been poor; the second half boring, the first 45 minutes quite terrible.
Adrab first half started promisingly - Newcastle going close throughCharles N'Zogbia after some clever play on the left, Joey Bartonmissing a header after the following corner was flapped at by Antti Niemiwhile drawing a good save from the Finn after finding himself in asimilar position on the quarter hour, while Fulham having a chance withDavid Healy forcing a good stop from Shay Given.
Thechorus of boos that accompanied the sides as they trudged down thetunnel for the break said it all - much of the play was disjointed, passes rarely finding their destinations and the players barely at theraces, highlighted by a half-interested Obafemi Martins repeatedly straying offside when it seemed easier to stay on.
Thesecond half was barely any better, Fulham coming out with more intentbut soon losing impetus, while Newcastle were solid but unspectacular.Healy foraged a lonely furrow, although Hameur Bouazzabecame a useful outlet down the left, his pace and trickery causing thevisiting defence some problems that were ultimately dealt with.
Given saved his defence's blushes when David Rozenhal and Habib Beye dilly-dallied over clearing a routine long ball by getting down low to hold onto Healy's weak finish, while James Milnerwent close to setting up Alan Smith after a neat Martins backheel puthim in only for Fulham's defence to get back in numbers and block thelow, drilled centre.
The introduction of Mark Vidukalivened things up, the burly Australian inches away from converting atthe far post after Rozenhal drilled a Milner free kick across goal,Niemi having saved 10 minutes earlier from a similar chance for Nicky Butt.
Bothsides increased the tempo in the latter stages but neither could forcea breakthrough, Barton going close for the guests and substitute Shefki Kuqi unsettling the Newcastle defence - for whom Habib Beye was excellent - despite his technical limitations.
Butthen Omosuzi's moment of madness came - sliding in roughly into theback of Smith after he nodded down a Milner ball - and Barton made nomistake to send the penalty into the bottom right and Fulham into thebottom three.
The back-to-back victories mean Newcastle climb above West Ham into tenth.

Smith honoured by Newcastle captaincy
      tribalfootball.com      -      December 24, 2007

Alan Smith is delighted to be have been awarded the Newcastle United captaincy.

The 27-year-old led out the side against Derbyon Sunday in the absence of Geremi, and with the Cameroon internationaldue to head off on African Nations Cup duty next month, he looks likelyto do so again.
Having completed an impressive 'hat-trick', theLeeds-born player is relishing the chance to develop his leadershipskills, although he intends to go about it in his own style.
Smith said: "It's a massive honour for me. Ihave captained all three clubs I have been at - Leeds United,Manchester United and Newcastle now.
"As a captain, you know what's necessary, you know what's wanted from yourself and what you can demand from others.
"That's part of growing up as a footballer, to be honest. People see you as someone other people can follow.
"When I play, it is not about ranting and ravingand going on, it is about playing with a commitment and a desire thatother people want to follow themselves and set an example for everyoneelse.
"It gives you that extra lift. It is not likeyou are carrying the rest of the team, but you are the focal pointbecause you are wearing the armband.
"You have got to make sure that you are 100 per cent week in, week out and not let your standards drop."
