Russia to produce new MiG-29M/M2

Sat, 31 May 2008 03:36:00

The Sokol aircraft plant based in Nizhny Novgorod in central Russia is launching the production of the MiG-29M/M2 Fulcrum fighter plane.

The company's general director, Mikhail Shibayev made the statement on Friday. He added that the first aircraft to be produced was scheduled to be completed in the second quarter of 2010.

MiG's general director Anatoly Belov said the new aircraft would use the most advanced technology, namely the Zhuk-M onboard radar and cutting-edge avionics, RIA Novosti reported.

The aircraft is able to detect air targets at ranges of up to 120 km and has the potential to attack four targets simultaneously.

Belov also said that the aircraft would be sold both at home and abroad, adding that the company had already received an order for the aircraft from an anonymous foreign customer.

The Russian BCVGN(X)

Back in early April, Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky discussed some of the intentions behind the aviation ship project Russia will begin designing this year. Last week he confirmed several of those details, and also added that as design begins this year, construction will begin around the 2012 time frame.

As observers of the Russian Navy, we are curious of Russian ambitions to develop aviation ships, and have been researching all comments that might tip off what Russia is thinking. The following translation is by me, so it may not be perfect, but babblefish is stupid. This comment by Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky back on April 4th specifically caught our attention.

"these will be brand new ships that will carry existing aircraft, but also unmanned flying vehicles and technologies for influence towards space."

We found another discussion translated from an ITAR-TASS article from April 4th of a similar comment.

"these will be the fundamentally new ships, on which, besides usual aircraft, unmanned flying vehicles will be based, and there will also be serious strings to space".

However you want to translate Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky's comments, the last part of his discussion in April with the "space" aspect is the key clue in our opinion.

News agencies have translated the Russian aviation ship discussion as aircraft carriers, but we want to highlight the accurate translation is in fact aviation capable ships, the same words used to describe the Kiev class 20 years ago. The aviation capable ships Russia has suggested they will build have been estimated at 50,000 tons each, support for around 30 planes, helicopters, and UAVs, and it will be nuclear powered.

In following some of the discussions that have come from Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky's comments in April, we are starting to think Russia is planning to build a hybrid ship that crosses a nuclear powered ballistic missile battlecruiser and an aircraft carrier. A 50,000 Kiev II class perhaps?

It will be interesting to see more discussions on this aviation ship topic as the Russian design effort begins. If indeed the Russians are crossing a BMD cruiser and an aircraft carrier, we are observing a trend worth noting as nations look to the future.

Russian Navy deploys ships to Venezuela

A Russian Navy squadron set off for Venezuela Monday in adeployment of Russian military power to the Western Hemisphereunprecedented since the Cold War.

During the Cold War, Latin America became an ideological battleground between the Soviet Union and the United States. The Kremlin has recently moved to intensify contacts with Venezuela,Cuba and other Latin American nations amid strained relations withWashington after last month's conflict between Russia and Georgia.

The squadron comprising the Russian Northern Fleet's Pyotr Veliky(Peter the Great) battle cruiser and the anti-submarine warfare (ASW)ship Admiral Chabanenko will participate in exercises off theVenezuelan coast.

In the past, the world's major powers would demonstrate their navalcapabilities in various regions, hinting ominously that they coulddisrupt enemy lines of communication in case of conflict.

Gunboats and other small warships, rather than capital warships, werean effective instrument for accomplishing such objectives.

However, the Pyotr Veliky and the Admiral Chabanenko are the RussianNavy's newest capital ships. Moscow's decision to send them toVenezuela implies that both warships can show their flags and defendthem.

Military analysts often stress that the Russian Navy is vastlyoutnumbered by the U.S. Navy and those of NATO countries, and thatRussian warships would be unable to score any impressive results.

Although the U.S. Navy is a powerful fighting force, it cannot bestrong everywhere. The arrival of two capital Russian warships in theCaribbean Sea, traditionally a U.S. sphere of influence, will be anasty surprise to Washington, compelling it to devote more attention toregional defenses.

The Pyotr Veliky displaces 25,000 metric tons and carries 20 P-700Granit (SS-N-19 Shipwreck) supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles thatcan destroy ships of any class. The Russian battle cruiser is alsoheavily armed for ASW and air-defense missions; such weaponry alsoenhances its combat survivability.

The Admiral Chabanenko, which carries eight P-270 Moskit (SS-N-22Sunburn) anti-ship missiles and surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems,is intended to locate and destroy enemy submarines.

Both warships can support each other and have the capability to inflictmajor losses on any adversary before they are outgunned.

The Russian squadron's objectives, rather than its capabilities, are ahigh-priority issue. The Kremlin has recently used the Navy during thepeace enforcement operation in Georgia and now wants to display itsnaval might at America's doorstep.

Nevertheless, the Russian Navy's state will not improve as a result ofMoscow's modified policies. Hopefully, the government will soon startrestoring and rearming the Navy because any show of strength willotherwise prove ineffective.

Russia 慔ad Laser Cannons Before U.S.

MOSCOW (RIA Novosti) - Russia started developingtactical laser weapons before the United States and has severalprototypes of high-precision combat chemical lasers in its arsenal, adefense industry source said on Tuesday.

The Boeing Company said recently it had test-fired a high-energychemical laser fitted aboard a C-130H aircraft for the first time. Thesuccessful ground tests, "a key milestone for the Advanced TacticalLaser Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration program," took place onMay 13 at the Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico.

Commenting on the announcement, the Russian expert said: "We tested asimilar system back in 1972. Even then our 憀aser cannon was capable ofhitting targets with high precision."

"We have moved far ahead since then, and the U.S. has to keep pace with our research and development," he added.

US, Russia, China in Dogfight Over Jet Sales

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States is bracing for tough competitionfrom Russia and China as cash-flush Asian economies look up to the triofor a new breed of fighter jets to beef up their air forces, expertssay.

Japan, India, Australia and South Korea are keen to have the mostmodern, fifth generation, jet fighters while Southeast Asian nationssuch as Malaysia and Indonesia are reportedly eyeing fourth generationfighters from China.

With Asia powering ahead with military modernization and capabilitygrowth, the United States wants to maintain leadership in defense salesin the region attracted by low cost offerings from Russia and China, experts said.

"The Americans and Russians are competing hard for the Asian fighteraircraft market, but everybody is also watching to see how aggressivelythe Chinese will be entering this market," Richard Fisher, an expertwith the Washington-based International Assessment and Strategy Center, said.

The tight competition comes as Asian economies move ahead "much moreaggressively" to upgrade their air defense capabilities, he said.

"It's not quite right to say an arms race, but there is an arms jog in Asia," Fisher said.

The United States is currently the sole producer of fifth generationfighters - the F-22s and F-35s. Export of F-22s is barred by law whilethe lower cost F-35s have just started flight testing ahead ofdeployment around 2012.

Russia and China's fifth generation fighter offerings could well be onthe market between 2015 and 2020, a time frame experts say is not veryfar away in terms of defense planning.

"I don't want to get into the numbers because they were given to me inconfidence but the price the Russians are estimating for their fifthgeneration fighter is substantially less than the Joint Strike Fighter(F-35) and substantially less than F-22," U.S. aviation expert ReubenJohnson told a Washington forum last week on "challenges to the Asianair power balance."
He said the Russian arms industry was grappling with high production costs.

Russian weapon exports to China have also plunged as Beijing becamemore wary over Moscow's sales of its most advanced weaponry to neighborIndia, Johnson said.

"What is really the challenge is we have two very large countries,China and India, whose economies are booming and who are buying lots ofhardware and we are looking at a situation down the road where they aregoing to have very, very sophisticated air forces," he said.

Russia had already teamed up with India to co-develop and co-produce aversion of Moscow's fifth generation fighter, but Fisher said thatgiven the Indian preference of diversifying its weapons sources, it waspossible New Delhi could purchase a U.S. fifth generation fighter atsome point.

The United States is also vying with Russia and others for a12-billion-dollar contract to sell 126 fourth generation fighter jetsto the Indian air force.

The competition from Russia could prod the Americans to lift an exportban on F-22s, eyed by Australia and Japan, top U.S. allies in theregion, experts said.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates hinted during a recent Australian visit that Congress may be asked to reconsider the ban.

"It is imperative that the United States consider selling some versionof the F-22 to maintain a strong deterrent posture in Asia," Fishersaid.

"I would say categorically that Japan requires a capability of thelevel of the F-22 in order to sustain a sufficient position to deterChina," he said.

Russian Bombers Patrol Over Atlantic Ocean

MOSCOW (RIA Novosti) - Two Russian Tu-95 Bearstrategic bombers and two Il-78 aerial tankers are carrying out routinepatrols over neutral Atlantic waters, a Russian Air Force spokesmansaid on Wednesday.

Interceptions of Russian combat aircraft by NATO fighters are becominga common occurrence again, after Russia resumed strategic bomber patrolflights over the Pacific, Atlan璽ic, and Arctic oceans last August, following an order signed by President Vladimir Putin

"During the flights the crews develop their flying skills in northernlatitudes, over unmarked terrain," Colonel Alexander Drobyshevsky said.

He said the crews also perfect their in-flight refueling techniques, allowing the bombers to remain in the air for more than 24 hours and isconsidered extremely difficult "especially when the Russian planes areaccompanied by NATO interceptors."
"All Russian Air Force flights are performed... in strict accordancewith international rules on the use of airspace over neutral waterswithout violating the borders of other states," he also said.

Although it was common practice during the Cold War for both the U.S.and the Soviet Union to keep nuclear strategic bombers permanentlyairborne, the Kremlin decided to cut back on long-range patrols in1992. The decision came as a result of the collapse of the SovietUnion, and the ensuing economic and political chaos.

However, the newly-resurgent Russia, awash with petrodollars, hasinvested heavily in military technology. The resumption of long-rangepatrols is widely seen among political commentators as another sign ofthe nation's effort to reassert itself both militarily and politically.
