Shilpa Shetty demands apology from tabloid

Actress Shilpa Shetty has issued a legal notice to a city tabloid for publishing a ?efamatory? and ?amaging? article connecting her with alleged extortionist Fazalur Rehman and has demanded an immediate apology.

In the notice, Shilpa has alleged that the August 8 article had been published without proper investigation and done to ?ncrease the sale of the newspaper and for publicity.?

The article states that police were likely to question Shilpa and her parents for allegedly asking Rehman to make extortion calls to a Surat businessman.

?ou have taken the judiciary in your own hands and passed derogatory remarks and statements. My client is not party to the case but the article published by you shows as if my client is guilty and is a criminal,? the notice served by Shilpa? lawyer Rohini Vakil said.

The notice demanded that the tabloid tender an apology within seven days from the receipt of the notice, failing which Shilpa would be forced to take legal action.

Mallika Sherawat passed out while shooting kissing scene!

It may sound unbelievable, but Bollywood? hottest siren passed out while shooting a scene for her movie Pyar Ke Side Effects .

The film, a romantic comedy, has Mallika Sherawat playing a girl who woos her man and proposes him to marriage the way guys usually do to girls. Rahul Bose plays the man she vies for in the flick.

We reported earlier that the film would have an underwater kissing scene between Mallika and Rahul in a song sequence. Now, here is some more dope on the scene.

Firstly, it may come as a shock to many, but the sexy girl we see so often in bikinis and swimsuits doesn? know how to swim.

Mallika? difficulty in giving the scene was further aggravated by the fact that the water was cold. When the lissome belle began shivering while shooting the scene, the movie? director, Saket Chaudhary, hit upon an idea of giving her some brandy to hot things up.

But the cold of the water and the hot sensation of brandy did not go well with Mallika. They made an unusual cocktail. Mallika eventually passed out, much to the worry of everyone around.

Finally, after a few unconscious moments, Mallika regained her senses and everyone was relieved.

?yar Ke Side Effects? comes with the tagline ?atch love crash in this season?. The film is slated for a September release.

KANK is the biggest first week spinner ever

For all the appreciation, criticism, good/bad word of mouth and some mixed bad of press support that Karan Johar? ?abhi Alvida Na Kehna? was getting since its August 11 release, the facts and figures have indeed painted a brilliantly lit bright picture for the film.

As per a reliable box office source, the film has gone on to net close to Rs. 28 crore in a matter of one week across cinemas in India. This clearly beats the 26.5 crore record created by ?rrish? just 7 weeks back. Not just in India but even in overseas the film has already broken a number of records set over last few years by margin of crores.

The trade is now obviously enthusiastic with the figures being out and has all eyes set in two big releases coming up soon - ?on- The Chase Begins Again? and ?hoom 2′.

Would the records tumble again? Come October/November and we should have all the answers out in open!

Another Rakhi Sawant controversy

Controversies are not new to Rakhi Sawant . And this time it? her attire ? or the lack of it ? that is raising eyebrows.

Rakhi stoked controversy yet again on Thursday with a powerful nurses? body describing her skimpy dress in a song and dance video as a ?reat insult? to their profession and demanding that the Government immediately withdraw it from TV channels.

?e are shocked to see the scene in some of the channels, showing Rakhi Sawant and few other girls dancing as nurses in very short white frocks and cap. This is a great insult to nursing profession as a whole. Nurses are not item girls,? the All India Government Nurses Federation said in New Delhi.

The Federation has shot off letters to Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi and Censor Board Chairperson Sharmila Tagore seeking directions to the concerned authorities to immediately withdraw the song and dance video.

Nursing was a noble profession engaged in the service of the suffering humanity and should not be defamed by producers and actors, the letter stated.

Amitabh Bachchan: Hot in pink

Actor Amitabh Bachchan has been praised to the hilt for his power-packed performance in Kabhi Alvida? and rightly so. The actor has survived well in this industry and has kept up with trends ? be it stylish dark glasses or the ?etro-sexual? pink coats that are so in theses days.

Only recently, a fan told us, ? saw him at the airport sporting this pink coat, and was quite taken aback. But frankly, there? nobody who could?e carried it off better than him.? So Big B is not only trendy on-screen but off-screen, too. And that? quite a ?osy? picture, for sure.

When SRK blew flying kisses

Zara hat ke is a favourite phrase in the Indian film industry: ?amari film zara hat ke hai,? ?ilm ki story zara hat ke hai,? ?he treatment of the film is hat ke?

Most times, it? delusory. But it? refreshing when filmmakers, who have been predictably different in their approach to filmmaking, truly do something hat ke for the film? music launch.

The music for Farhan Akhtar? Don was released at the Inorbit Mall (located in Malad, a Mumbai suburb) in the presence of a thousand screaming fans. A stage was erected in the parking lot.

The event was supposed to start at 5 p.m. But an hour later, there was still no sign of the show beginning any time soon. The title track of Don was being played endlessly and every time Shah Rukh Khan? ? am the King? dialogue played, the fans screamed louder.

Radio jockey J Harsh of Radio Mirchi was the host for the evening, and he came onstage at regular intervals to assure the fans that SRK would be there soon.

At 6:45 pm, Harsh started the show by calling music directors Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy on to the stage. They sang Morya re, celebrating the Ganesh Chaturthi weekend.

The trio said that there were a total of five songs in the film, of which three were ?odified? versions from the original Amitabh Bachchan-starrer. One of these will be Khaike Paan Banaraswala, in which SRK also reportedly sings. The others will be Main Hoon Don and Yeh Mera Dil.

Next, Isha Koppikar came on to the stage and danced to the beats. Isha plays the role of the real Don? girlfriend in the movie (which was played by Aparna Chaudhry in the original).

SRK came onstage, even as firecrackers went off. As soon as people spotted him, they screamed and whistled twice as much, and all the cameras, handycams, mobiles and digicams started flashing.

Shah Rukh, on his part, was his usual charming self. He waved, smiled, bowed, screamed ? love you? and blew flying kisses.

He claimed that he had made it to the venue on time but could not make an early appearance as he was waiting for the others to arrive. He said that Farhan thought of movies the way the younger generation does and hence, he was certain that the younger audiences would like Don.

Talking about the action sequences in the movie, SRK said that Farhan had been very kind to him and his age, and had mostly made him fight with the ladies and not the tough guys!

SRK entertained the crowds by singing a Hindi rap from the film? soundtrack, and delivering some dialogues from the film.

Farhan Akhtar (top, centre), producer Ritesh Sidhwani (right), Bhushan and Krishan Kumar (of T-Series) and Om Puri were also present at the music launch.

When the exit music played, King Khan gave a final salaam to the crowd and was gone.

As I walked back, I heard a lady talking excitedly on the phone, ? came to shop, and I saw Shah Rukh! He was so amazing.I love him!?

One regular appearance for King Khan but a memory of a lifetime for a fan.

Will Don be Banned?

Reports are that the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Don may run into trouble with the health ministry.

Yes, if you have watched the promos of the film on the small screen then your guess is bang on target as reports say that ?on? seems to have touched a wrong chord with Union Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, even before its release.

Last year Ramadoss had banned all smoking scenes in films and television and in the promos you can see SRK flinging a cigarette butt in the air and in another scene exhaling cigarette smoke on the face of the camera.

Reports are that Ramadoss is reportedly displeased with the fact that the lead character is allegedly glamourising smoking in the film.

Ramadoss? contention, however, seems to be based solely on the promos of the film as he has not seen the movie as yet.

Producer Ritesh Sidhwani, defends ?on? saying that no law had been violated and the promos of the movie had been cleared by the Censor Board before being aired.

Director Farhan Akhtar is also reportedly upset with what he calls ?isinterpretation? of the smoking scenes in the movie.

Sources say SRK? character in the film was, in fact, against smoking and there is a dialogue in the movie which indicates that the actor denounces the act of smoking.

Reports say ?on? went into production just after the health ministry had issued a notification banning smoking in films and the producers had taken enough care that the issue of smoking didn? hamper the making of the film.

The remake of the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Don (1978) , ?on? is scheduled for a Diwali/Eid release this year.

Shah Rukh rocks !

We all know that Shah Rukh Khan has this most amazing sense of humour. The other day while releasing the music of debutant producer Anuradha Prashad? Zindagi Rocks (directed by Tanuja Chandra) starring Sushmita Sen, Shiney Ahuja and Kim Sharma, SRK was in his element as always. While talking about the movie he said, ?ook at this movie. It has a short name and so do the stars doing it.

There? Sush, Shiney, Kim, and it? made by Anu and Tanu!? Everyone present there, right from Maharashtra CM Vilasrao Deshmukh to Uddhav and Rashmi Thackeray to Sachin Tendulkar and his wife Anjali burst out laughing at this. Must say, SRK certainly has a ?ocking? sense of humour!

36 China Town was a mistake - Isha Kopikar

Isha Kopikar has finally admitted that she could have been better off if she hadn? signed ?36 China Town?.

In a film where even Kareena Kapoor and Shahid Kapoor didn? gain much since Akshaye Khanna went away with all the accolades, there weren? much chances for Isha Kopikar. The young woman had hardly a part to play inspite of being the reason for all the action [the film is a murder mystery in which Isha gets killed

Isha has said that working in ?36 China Town? was a mistake since what was narrated was very different from what eventually arrived on screen. In fact number of her scenes
ere chopped off and an all important scene of her murder didn? even make it to the final copy.

She has vowed that now she would be more careful about signing a film just on the basis of its banner and would instead concentrate most on the importance of her role!

Shahrukh gets top security

The Congress has requested the Home Ministry to upgrade Shahrukh Khan? security to Y plus security. Very few people are given this status and it is equal to what the Cabinet minister gets. Shahrukh had gotten 2 batches of nine armed police guards as well as a police vehicle which escorts him wherever he goes.

Now we can surely say that Shahrukh has nothing to worry about regarding his well-being but does it mean that his fans will get shoo-ed away as well.

Reshammiya says ?ho? Sonu??

Bollywood grapevine insists that singer Himesh Reshammiya criticised Sonu Niigaam, whose concerts are now being conducted parallel to his in the US. But the rumours have got the nasal singer perturbed.

? never said things like ?ho? Sonu?? Why should I? I have the highest regard for Sonu as a singer. Some people are constantly trying to create a problem between us. I would never speak ill of Sonu. I respect him a lot to talk badly of him,? Reshammiya clarified.

Reshammiya says the war between him and Sonu has been created by vested interests.

?? tired of people trying to create a rift between Sonu and me. I?e always said I? a singer by chance whereas Sonu is a genuine singer and far more talented than me,? Reshammiya said.

The popular singer-composer feels he has been misunderstood.

?y shyness is often misconstrued as arrogance. I? too grounded and don? let my success go to my head. I sincerely believe my success is due to God, my parents and the good wishes of lakhs of people,? Reshammiya said.

Miss Hawa Hawaii

Conversations about when Mallika Sherawat was born and where she came from aren? exactly hotly debated as much as the depletion of ozone layer.

But Madame M has always been a better headliner for the voyeurs (that would be us). And so we have another juicy tidbit that we? like you to chew on.

We laid our hands on a picture that may actually change the ?umber? game for Miss Sherawat. This particular photograph (in possession of the mag OK! India) was shot in 1995 when Mallika was Reema Lamba and worked as a crew with Air India. She was all of 23 years old then (in a blue sari on the extreme right).

But our problem is this: reports in magazines and on the internet claim that Mallika was born on October 24, 1981. That would make her age 25 today.

But going by these pictures, the sexy lady would have been all of 14 years when it was shot! Now isn? that a little too young for an airline to employ girls? Or is it that Miss Sherawat is trying to conceal her age, along with everything else?

SRK - Shakira in a hot number?

The MTV video awards had Shakira dancing to Farah? steps for her record breaking new song Hips don? lie.

And as promised, it was Shakira with the Indian spice at the MTV awards and choreographer Farah Khan did exactly what she had promised before she left.

?? be really stupid if I had Shakira and I didn? let her do her belly dancing,? said Farah.

The Hips don? lie act, complete with the Indian princess look and the dancers, worked well for the audience, especially with Shaggy doing the opening honours.

After just spending three days to train with Farah, the buzz is that now Shakira wants an entire music video to be choreographed by her.

Now, its only a matter of getting Shakira to do what Farah wants!

?he may come down and do an item number in my next film with Shah Rukh. They?l be hot together!? said Farah.

Bipasha Basu being sued over India Day Parade

Organisers of the controversial India Day Parade in New Jersey plan to sue Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu for breach of contract for not participating in the event and making allegations of ?arassment? against two of their volunteers.

Indian Business Association (IBA), which had organised the parade, said it has constituted an inquiry, headed by New Jersey Superior Court Judge Richard Plechner, and will file the case after the inquiry is complete, IBA sources said.

Basu was invited to lead the Independence Day parade in Edison and some 10,000 people had collected to watch the event.

But Basu came late and charged that she had gone through harrowing experience at the hands of persons sent to bring her from a New York hotel to the venue of parade.

She said she had gone back to hotel and decided to return and speak frankly about the humiliation she suffered in the Limo sent to bring her to Edison.

After hearing her, dozens of people left and did not participate in the parade. She claimed she had received some bruises which were photographed but did not file any case.

Ayesha Takia almost died?

Bollywood actress Ayesha Takia had a close brush with disaster when a stunt for her latest film went horribly wrong, leaving her on a railway track next to a speeding train, her producer said to a national daily on Friday.

During shooting for director Nagesh Kukunoor? new film Dor in Rajasthan, Takia decided to do her own stunt, executive producer Elahi said.

?t was a train sequence and Ayesha had to run alongside the train,? Elahi said.

?uddenly we couldn? see her any more. We all thought that she must have come under the train,? he added.

The 21-yeay-old actor tripped over a pipe and landed right next to the rails. The producer confirmed that she was injured but provided no details.

?he was very close to the tracks, luckily she was alive,? a very relieved Elahi said.

Look! Bips-Zayed on the run

Braving the bright sun and dry weather, Bipasha Basu and Zayed Khan are on the run in Pondicherry. They are running on the streets, by the seaside and everywhere possible. And making them run is their good friend and filmmaker Rohan Sippy.

?t? fun to see them run all around. Usually we are running around, now it? nice to see the actors running when you say so,? filmmaker, Rohan Sippy says.

When asked who is a better runner, Bipasha was quick to answer. ? don? know. But I would like to believe it? me,? she said.

Zayed Khan agreed, ?ipasha is a better runner.?

Bipasha and Zayed are the new brand ambassadors for the apparel brand Pantaloons. And the reason they were running around was for their new TV commercial.

The actors, who are working together for the first time, say the brand goes well with their personality.

? am a kind of an actor who is known for the kind of clothes I wear both on and off screen so the brand association is correct in the sense because they make a lot of trendy clothes,? Bipasha said.

?t? not that I would jump onto the bandwagon which completely doesn? reflect of what I do,? Zayed said.

Though it was Rohan Sippy? first trip to Pondicherry, both Zayed and Bipasha have old an association with the city.

? shot here for Jism for a long time. On this particular trip I insisted that I stay in the same hotel, same room. Because I have really amazing memories of Jism,? Bipasha said.

While Bipasha looked a little upset without beau John Abraham around, Zayed had wife Mallika to share all the nostalgia with.

? used to study in Kodai International School. So, we used to visit Pondicherry, Auroville often on our field trip. I have lots of friends from these places. I am coming here after ten years. It feels nostalgic,? Zayed said.

Don is suave bhai with a twist
Priyanka Jain

August 30, 2006 15:01 IST

He may have taken on the risk of remaking the 1978 blockbuster, Don, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman and Pran, but Farhan Akhtar claims he is not competing with the original. Re-making Don is simply his way of paying tribute to a film he enjoyed watching as a child, and to its stars and makers.
"While retaining the essence of the film, I have tried to make it with my own perspective," said Farhan, who made his debut with the hugely enjoyable Dil Chahta Hai, starring Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna and Preity Zinta. "I am very excited about making Don. The feedback from those who have watched it has been good. It has elements of fun, thrill and adventure. It will be an exciting film."

Speaking about the cast of Don, he said, "Shah Rukh Khan plays a double role and has sung a portion of the song Khaike Paan Banaras Wala. Then there is Priyanka Chopra who plays the role played by Zeenat earlier. I was very excited about the fact that Priyanka chose to do the stunt scenes by herself. It made the shot look more believable. It gave me scope to cover fight sequences from all angles, without constraints. If the stunts are performed by someone else, we have to shoot the scene so that the double's face is not seen. For Priyanka, too, I think it was an enriching experience."

The abundant use of new technology is already evident from the hitech look of the movie's promos. Farhan says, "Don is a film that utilises technology and I have used whatever I think is useful for the film. There is nothing in the movie that has been put there because it looks or feels good. It's all there because it needs to be there. Even the gizmos that we have used in the film are very intrinsically built into the screenplay.

"Shah Rukh has done a fantastic job. He has public acceptance to begin with and I am confident people will love him in his Don avatar," he adds.

Asked why he chose to retain two songs from the original, he said, "Those songs are very intrinsic to the memory and love I have for the original Don. There are things in the movie that make it special for me. Like the background score of the film, these two songs, certain dialogues, certain situations are a vital part of the movie and I thought it would be a crime on my part not to have them in the remake.

The music of the film is by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy who worked with me on my last two productions. They have created a very modern sound, keeping in mind a slightly retro element which harks back to the 1970s. I think they have managed to achieve something special."

But why remake it in the first place?

Farhan said, "I chose to remake the film because I am excited about it. The styling and the treatment of the film is new. It's paced and written with dialogues that work more with today's time and there are certain story changes which I can't reveal.

"We have tried to create an individual style for Shah Rukh in the film. He is a gangster and we normally associate gangsters with suits but I wanted to give a little twist. So designer Aki Narula came up with the idea of getting him to wear printed shirts with similar printed tie's. But we didn't want him to look just suave; we wanted a ' suave-bhai', so the tie is inside the shirt and not out. I quite liked the way it looked, and so we incorporated that in his look.

"It is pointless to be bothered about the comparisons that will happen. I don't worry about that because I am quite certain people will compare. I spend most of my energy and waking time working on the film. My guess is that the closer I get to the release of the film, I might think more about it."

His father, Javed Akhtar, who has written the screenplay for the movie, said, "I have seen one reel of the film. If the rest of the film is as good as that film, I think it will be fantastic. It's very elegant, neatly done. It's very today and very stylish. They have updated the screenplay, modernised it and made it in their own way."

After the release of Don, Farhan will act in Anand Sorapur's Fakir. Then there is Luck By Chance with Tabu directed by Zoya Akhtar. "I had started acting in Fakir before we started work on Don. We will recommence shooting in November. For me, Fakir is now a four-month-old story and to get into the same mode as I was then, will be difficult. I am playing the role of a production person in the media, called Adi Contractor, who has been given the responsibility to find a person to take him to Venice for an exhibition," Farhan said.

Speaking about the lessons learnt in his new avataar as an actor, Farhan says, "While directing actors, it's very important to understand them, their insecurities and where they come from. The writer and the director live with the script much before it reaches the actor. So sometimes it takes time for the actor to understand what the director wants. But approaching the process from the other side has been quite a learning experience for me. My acting sessions have taught me how I can better deal with actors. Remember, BOTH acting and directing are extremely difficult. As much as you enjoy what you do, you need to put in a lot of hard work. It is good only when one works towards it."

Next, Farhan will direct and produce Love Story, besides his forthcoming production Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd.
