Living in the dump
28-11-2007
By Elan Perumal

HOW would you feel if you have to eat, sleep, do daily chore, work in your garden or study in an environment filled with a pungent stench?

You will be distressed, miserable and may even feel wretched, right? You will obviously be un-comfortable and unhappy, even in your own home, right? You will also be ashamed to invite your relatives, friends or colleagues for visits, even during festive times, right?

This is exactly what tens of thousands of residents of Kam-pung Sungai Sedu in Banting have been bearing with, for more than eight years!

The presence of a waste dumpsite at Sungai Sedu in Banting is making life very hard to live for the residents.

Source of income: A man walking with a basket of recyclable items
that he had scavenged from the Sungai Sedu dumpsite

According to some residents, the dumpsite has been operating in Kampung Sungai Sedu for more than eight years and has been releasing unbearable pungent stench that could be felt by people living as far as Banting town some 5km away.

Following complaints from the residents, we visited the area and saw many garbage trucks from various districts, including Kuala Langat, Klang, Se-pang and Kajang, unloading rubbish in the area.

Besides the Alam Flora garbage trucks, tipper trucks and other private trucks also unload waste in the area from as early 7am daily, except for Sundays and public holidays.

A signboard at the entrance of the dump site indicates that only solid waste is permitted into the area.

Several excavators were seen working on the garbage as soon as the trucks dumped them.

The dumpsite has also become a popular hunting ground for scavengers collecting recyclable items such as plastics and metal. These people have also erected makeshift huts around the site as resting places.

It is learnt that the dumpsite was one of the hot issues discussed during the last few full board meetings of the Kuala Langat Municipal Council.

Teluk Datoh assemblyman Da-tuk Ei Kim Hock had also highlighted the plight of the residents at the recent sitting of the Selan-gor State Assembly.

According to Ei, the number of people complaining about the stench from the dumpsite has increased and he is finding it difficult to defend the government's action or inaction when confronted by the people.

揚eople from as far as Banting and Jenjarom are complaining and I hope the state government will do something about it,

What a pong! Sungai Sedu MIC branch chairman
S. Rajaseran has to pinch his nose to avoid inhaling
the stench of the Sungai Sedu dumpsite in Banting.
However, villagers in the area have had to endure it
for years now

they DO NOT have to endure this anymore --
do something!!  make a different ---
orang malaysia ni-  benda2 cam ni   terima aje -
biarlah....nantilah.... nanti depa bersihkan lah...
depa tau tu... depa akan buat sesuatu tu.... tengoklah nanti
lagi pun 5 years ago pun depa dah janji  masa before election tu
yang kalau kita elect depa - depa akan bersihkan right there and then!!

yeah right!! -bla bla bla ding dong ding dong -- lagi 20 tahun pun sama juga
sebab this villagers never wanna learn & get out of this nightmare

come on orang banting!! wake up and smell the roast lamb!! --
only you can make a different and choose what kind of place/area
you wanna stay!! -

several places and some people in Malaysia do practiced EXTREMELY BAD HYGIENE, believe me, i've seen people littering on the streets, simple as that, and yet that does not represent everyone, it is unfair for some of us to accuse the 26Million Malaysians are comfortable with dirty lifestyle.

Penang & Kuala Lumpor are better than the entire Bangladesh & Nepal i supposed, ahaks. So keep up the good work thou my fellow Malaysians!

memang betul..

LOL! e noe wot i mean? ahaks. eh kat KL ok pe, certain areas tu mmg hebat pe, tp most areas mmg agak kurang sedap mate memandang sak. hehehe, me prefer Penang lagik instead of KL, Penang cam semakin bersih n MaHAL since my last visit there. uiyo!! way to go Penang!

p/s kebersihan tu teras dlm masyarakat Islam kan, so kalau tak bersih tu, kurang la keISLAMannye. betul tak? LOL!
