Continued service excellence will give Changi competitive edge

SINGAPORE: Transport Minister Raymond Lim has urged all airport staff to continue to work hard as a team and sustain excellent service. This will enable Changi Airport to keep ahead of its competitors.

Mr Lim was speaking at the Annual Airport Reception on Monday where staff were recognised for their efforts in providing excellent service and contributing to the airport's success.

He said in the economic downturn, it's even more important that Changi Airport maintains its competitive edge as air travellers become more selective about their choice of stopover airports and holiday destinations.

He added that this pursuit of excellence has enabled Changi Airport to continue to win the "Best Airport" award this year, in addition to four other awards in the first two months of 2009.

Last year Changi Airport bagged a record 30 Best Airports Awards.

Mr Lim said: "Like what happened during the SARS crisis, all of us at Changi Airport must once again rise to the challenge and work hard to maintain our air hub position. Whether you are a staff of the airport, an airline, a retail outlet, a ground handler or a security agency, we must work together as one integrated aviation system to provide travellers a compelling reason to choose Changi Airport over others.

揟o keep ourselves ahead of the competition, Changi must continue to enhance its people centred skills and services. As always excellent customer service will be key.

Parliament passes Bill to corporatise Changi Airport

SINGAPORE: Parliament has passed a Bill to corporatise Changi Airport.

Under it, the functions of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) will be spilt between two entities.

A smaller CAAS will continue to be the regulator, promoter and developer of the aviation industry, while a corporatised entity will operate Changi Airport and the airport emergency services as well as exploit investment opportunities overseas.

However Second Minister for Transport Lim Hwee Hua gave the assurance that Changi Airport will not be fully privatised just yet.

She said: "The government will still retain full beneficial ownership of the airport company after corporatisation.

"Privatisation is a separate and distinct step to be deliberated upon and decided later by the government.

"Nevertheless, we have designed an economic regulatory system that is robust, regardless of ownership, should a decision to privatise be taken in the future."

During the parliamentary debate, MP for Holland-Bukit Timah, Liang Eng Hwa, raised concerns that corporatising CAAS could impact on Changi Airport's current status as an international air hub.

Mr Liang highlighted that the new airport company may not able to align its shorter term commercial targets with those of Singapore's longer term strategic interests.

Monopolistic pricing could arise. This, Mr Liang said, may see Changi Airport lose its competitive edge over other airports in the region.

He said: "For example, in the face of a new entrant, Changi Airport may need to temporarily price its charges very low to defend its position and fend off new competition.

"It may even have to be priced below the required commercial returns of a corporate entity in the short run.

"Would a profit-seeking company be prepared to go that extra mile for the overall economic gain of the country?

"Understandably, as a commercial entity, the company's strategic horizon will be shorter than that of a national agency like CAAS."

'CHECK-IN' GUNAKAN TELEFON BIMBIT


Kemudahan baru menerusi SIA Mobile

MELAKUKAN pemeriksaan masuk (check-in) menerusi telefon bimbit.

Kemudahan tersebut kini disediakan syarikat penerbangan Singapore Airlines (SIA) kepada para penumpangnya yang boleh memanfaatkan khidmat itu dari mana-mana tempat di dunia menggunakan telefon bimbit yang berdaftar di Singapura.

Khidmat SIA Mobile itu juga membolehkan penumpang melakukan check-in bagi penerbangan sambungan (connecting flights) yang dikendalikan syarikat-syarikat penerbangan yang mempunyai perjanjian check-in dengan SIA.

Menerusi kemudahan ini juga, penumpang SIA boleh memilih tempat duduk di dalam kapal terbang.

Sofwe aplikasi SIA Mobile itu direka syarikat penerbangan tersebut khas bagi menyediakan pilihan bagi para penumpang memanfaatkan khidmat-khidmat dalam talian SIA menerusi telefon bimbit mereka.

Menjelang akhir tahun ini, khidmat SIA Mobile akan dipertingkat untuk menyediakan khidmat tempahan tiket dan kemudahan memanfaatkan khidmat-khidmat KrisFlyer.

Untuk melakukan check-in menerusi telefon bimbit dan memilih tempat duduk, para penumpang hanya perlu menekan 'm.singaporeair.com' di browser web telefon bimbit mereka.

Penumpang kemudian akan diberi pilihan sama ada untuk memuat turun sofwe aplikasi SIA Mobile ke telefon bimbit atau melakukannya secara langsung menerusi browser web telefon bimbit mereka.

Ciri SIA Mobile ini disediakan di semua sektor penerbangan SIA.

Penumpang boleh melakukan check-in menerusi telefon bimbit antara dua dengan 48 jam sebelum berangkat.

Mengulas mengenai khidmat terbaru itu, Timbalan Presiden Kanan Produk dan Perkhidmatan SIA, Encik Yap Kim Wah, berkata:

'Melakukan check-in bagi penerbangan seharusnya sesuatu yang mudah bagi para penumpang. Kami gembira SIA Mobile kini dapat memenuhi keperluan para pelanggan kami'.

Changi starts screening

BORDER checks are being tightened in the light of a deadly new strain of swine flu that has already killed more than 80 people in Mexico.

In a joint press statement with the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore issued on Sunday, the Ministry of Health said that as of 11pm last night, passengers arriving from the United States were being screened by thermal scanners that check their temperature before they pass immigration.

From 8am on Monday, thermal scanners will be deployed at the arrival halls of Terminals 1, 2 and 3 to screen all arriving passengers.

The scanners will also be deployed to the Budget Terminal and Seletar Airport by Wednesday.

Passengers with higher than normal temperatures will be made to go through a thorough medical assessment.

The Health Ministry said the checks are non-intrusive and unlikely to cause delays, and flights in and out of Changi Airport will not be disrupted.

Health alert notices containing information about swine flu are also being placed at immigration counters for all arriving passengers.

Though Singapore has not reported any incidence of the virus, Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan said that it was 'better to play safe'. He told reporters on Sunday that with globalisation, reports of the virus spreading to parts of the United States were a reason for concern.

'It does not mean that it'll definitely become a pandemic. But it's better to play safe and assume the worst, rather than hoping that the worst will never come and when it does, it's too late to respond to it,' he said 'As we learnt from Sars, better to be proactive than behind the curve.'
