Saya pasti korang mesti pernah dengar nama Sherlock Holmes.

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (May 22, 1859 |

SIxret, saya juga minat sama ini Sherlock. Bestkan ceritanya.. Saya menang bid on ebay " The complete illustrated short stories" dengan harga murah je. Illustrations dalam buku ini adalah illustrations asal yang dipetik dari Strand Magazines di mana cerita ni mula-mula di terbit antara th 1891-1927.

Well I don't know where you get your info but the fact is Edgar Allan Poe(1809-1849) IS,notice that I'm using present tense coz though he's dead he remains(present) the father of MYSTERY.
Now,mystery is very general term.Mystery is the SUBJECT not a genre.
Whodunit is the THEME.Inverted mystery(where the murderer is known beforehand, the writers stress on whydunit) also a theme.
Genre under Mystery(not necessarily using whodunit theme):
1)police procedural-
2)thriller-so many writers write this genre
3)suspense-so many writers nowadays write under this genre it becomes cliche
4)gothic mystery-
5)hardboiled
6)private investigation(PI)-Sue Grafton,Marcia Muller
7)cozy mystery
8)the new one evolving from cozy mystery is chic-lit mystery
People always get confused with whodunit, even I sometimes do but the fact is that whodunit is a theme but that does not necessarily mean every mystery books IS whodunit.
the father of whodunit in GOLDEN AGE ERA(roughly between 1920-1960) IS E.C Bentley after he had written the much acclaimed novel "Trent's Last Case) But the big 4 women mystery writers i.e Agatha Christie,Dorothy L.Sayers,Margery Alligham and Ngaio marsh are well known now.The best plotter of Golden Age Mystery whodunit are Agatha Christie,John Dickson Carr and Ellery Queen.
Alfred Hitchcock??? He was into suspense film not novel though during his life, he acted as editor to short mysteries anthology.

i remembered loving to read Sherlock Holmes [and watching too], when i was a kid to my teen years.
One thing that i kinda hate though is when Conan Doyle revived Holmes due to pressure from the public as they want to read more of Holmes, when Arthur killed him when the character was very very popular.
Some similar situation can be compared with Agatha Christie's Poirot [pronounced Pwaro]. Agatha was bored with her character, and even in later revelation - hating the character herself. [this might be what Arthur was experiencing], but rather than killing Poirot suddenly, she focuses more on her other character - Miss Marple. So, eventually, ppl starts to shift to Miss Marple, and then killing the character[Poirot] later. [personally I love Miss Marple more than Poirot].
I don't think I've read all his works, but I love Hound of Baskervilles, and to be honest, I sometimes love Dr Watson's character more than Holmes himself. [yes, sue me ]

Well, you certainly know about the history of Sherlock Holmes.
And my personal favourite is definitely Hercule Poirot, the old eccentric genius sleuth. Long live Hercule Poirot
