Alonso was 'too slow' for Juventus says Ranieri

Juve held talks with Liverpool over the Spain international - a winner at Euro 2008 - but Alonso remained at Anfield.

"He was a player we wanted," Ranieri said of Alonso.

"But he is a player, who even though he is an extraordinary man and a great professional, left me perplexed by the slowness of his movement in midfield.

"In the midfield of Rafa Benitez's Liverpool, where all of them are little soldiers, he finds himself in a fantastic position.

"But in our midfield, he would have found it hard to support the midfield line seeing as (Juve wingers) Mauro Camoranesi and Pavel Nedved are not players that come back to give support like Liverpool's wingers."

Rumours suggest that Benitez could be in line for ailing Juventus

Liverpool supporters will want clarity over the rumours that their manager Rafa Benitez is being linked with a move to the ailing Juventus side in Serie A.

Current Juventus manager Claudio Ranieri has been under fire after his side抯 indifferent start to this season抯 campaign.

Rafa Benitez has also been criticised for the failure of the club to bring Aston Villa抯 Gareth Barry to the club during the summer. Benitez has also been frustrated with the club for a while which may give credibility to the current rumours.

Already Jurgen Klinsman has been linked as the next Liverpool manager as his current tenure at FC Bayern Munich has also hit shaky ground with some unexpectedly poor results.
