Atalanta 0-4 Juventus
BERGAMO, April 20 (Serie A) - Alessandro Del Piero turned back the clock with a stunning hat-trick as Juventus dismantled Atalanta at the Stadio Azzurri D'Italia on Sunday.
Del Piero served notice of his intentions by setting up the opener for Nicola Legrottaglie in the first minute of the game and the diminutive forward made it 2-0 with a deft volley just five minutes later.
Juve's all-time top scorer added his second 11 minutes before the break and completed his treble after 65 minutes as the third-placed Turin giants moved another step closer to sealing a place in next season's Champions League.
Atalanta's third defeat on the spin ends their slender hopes of claiming an automatic place in Europe, with the Bergamo club now 14 points off the final UEFA Cup berth with just four games remaining.
Prior to the match, Juve defender Legrottaglie claimed that he "owes so much'' to Atalanta coach Luigi Del Neri - with whom he worked for three seasons at Chievo - but showed his appreciation in somewhat strange fashion by opening the scoring inside 60 seconds.
Del Piero created the chance with a teasing free-kick from the left, and Legrottaglie made no mistake with a towering header to set the tone for what would be a painful afternoon's viewing for his former boss in the Atalanta dug-out.
The visitors went further ahead after six minutes, Del Piero volleying home a superb effort after connecting with David Trezeguet's flick from Mauro Camoranesi's cross.
Atalanta were struggling to create anything against their visitors but finally came close midway through the first half when Gianpaolo Bellini's excellent left-footed strike from outside the area whistled just wide of the post.
But just as it looked as though the hosts might claw their way back into the game, Juve went further ahead through 33-year-old Del Piero.
Cristiano Zanetti was the architect of the Bianconeri's third, his long probing pass finding Del Piero who slotted home with ease beyond Ferdinando Coppola in the Atalanta goal.
The hosts almost pulled a goal back two minutes later but Sergio Floccari's header from Bellini's pin-point cross went wide of the mark with Gianluigi Buffon stranded.
On 56 minutes Juve almost had another goal when Czech midfielder Pavel Nedved floated over a cross from the left that Del Piero made a sweet connection with but Coppola blocked well.
But the Italy international was not to be denied the match ball and claimed it nine minutes later.
Trezeguet again provided the assist for his strike partner, the France international playing in Del Piero who blasted past the helpless Coppola.
Juve eased off the gas for the closing stages, allowing Floccari to twice go close for the hosts but to no avail as Juve cantered home.
