Toni the hero as Bayern Munich hit Aris for six in UEFA Cup Hamburg - Luca Toni netted four goals as Bayern Munich eased into the last 32 of the UEFA Cup Wednesday with a 6-0 demolition of Aris Saloniki. The Bundesliga leaders only needed a draw to progress to the knockout phase but were assured victory after two first-half howlers from Aris and Greece goalkeeper Kostas Chalkias were ruthlessly punished by the Italian striker.

Toni secured his hat-trick on 64 minutes and added a fourth two minutes later when Chalkias could only parry Philipp Lahm's shot into his path.

Further goals from Christian Lell and Lahm completed the scoring for Ottmar Hitzfeld's side, who finish top of Group F with eight points.

English Premier League side Bolton Wanderers, who had already completed their four group matches, also qualify from the group with six points and are joined by SC Braga, who beat Red Star Belgrade 2-0 thanks to goals in each half from Roland Linz and Wender.

Although the three qualifying places in Group E were already settled with Spartak Moscow, Zurich and Bayer Leverkusen all through, German side Leverkusen secured top spot with a 5-0 victory over Zurich.

Vratislav Gresko opened the scoring for Leverkusen from a free kick on 19 minutes and Dmitriy Bulykin doubled the lead four minutes later.

Tranquillo Barnetta headed home a Stefan Kiessling five minutes after the restart and Bulykin netted his second goal of the game shortly before the hour mark. Kiessling completed the rout 10 minutes from time. In the other group match, Spartak went down 2-1 to Toulouse.

Spanish side Getafe secured top spot from Group G with a 2-1 defeat of Anderlecht, who still qualify despite the loss as Hapoel Tel Aviv surprisingly went down 3-1 at home to Aalborg. Tottenham Hotspur were already assured of qualification from the group.

Bordeaux maintained their 100 per-cent record in Group H, securing top spot in the process, with a 3-2 win away to Panionios. The loss means the Greek side miss out on qualification to Galatasary, who got the point they needed with a scoreless draw against Austria Vienna. Helsinborgs had already qualified.

The final round of UEFA Cup group matches continues Thursday with encounters in groups A to D.

The 24 qualifiers from the eight groups will be joined by eight third-placed teams in the group phase of the Champions League for the round of 32, a knock-out stage over two legs, with first games to be played on February 13 and 14.

Bundesliga - Lucio likes Latin link  Eurosport -  Wed, 19 Dec 17:19:00 2007

Bayern Munich defender Lucio has spoken of his desire to play in Spain or Italy. The Brazil centre back has played in Germany for the last seven years, first with Leverkusen and, since 2004, Bayern.

And, having won everything there is to win in club andinternational football apart from the Champions League, he is noweyeing a fresh challenge in a different league - and a warmer climate.
"Idream about Spain and Italy," the 29-year-old told Deutsche Welletelevision. "erhaps my dream can come true a bit earlier [than the endof my contract in 2010] if I can come to an agreement with the club.
"We are prisoners of the cold."
Bayern team-mate Lukas Podolski meanwhile hinted he would seek a move if he failed to break into the first team.
"Itwould be stupid if I said 'Munich is great, everything's going wellwith Bayern'," the Germany striker told the Sueddeutsche Zeitungnewspaper.

Bundesliga - Hitzfeld waits to declare next move  Eurosport -  Thu, 20 Dec 08:16:00 2007

BayernMunich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has made up his mind about whether he willstay in Munich next season but will not announce his decision untillate January, he said.

In an interview with ProSieben TV after Bayern routed ArisSalonika 6-0 in their final UEFA Cup group game, Hitzfeld saidspeculation he would be sacked if Bayern failed to advance in thecompetition reached "ridiculous" levels.
"I know what I'mgoing to do and I'll inform Bayern of my decision at the end ofJanuary," said Hitzfeld, who is reportedly a top candidate to becomeSwitzerland's coach.
"I'll definitely be staying at BayernMunich for the second half of the season," he said when asked about thespeculation he might leave or be sacked in the mid-season winter break.
"I hope we'll be able to win a couple of titles."
Hitzfeldcame under pressure after Bayern had won only two of their last eightmatches in all competitions. They lead the Bundesliga table atmid-season on goal difference despite their recent slump.
"Thelast week was pretty hard," Hitzfeld said. "But that's part of thebusiness. I only signed with Bayern for one season because I wanted tohave some freedom."

Unhappy Bayern Munich coach Hitzfeld eyes Swiss job offer: reportWed 19 Dec, 05:20 PM

GENEVA (AFP) - Embattled Bayern Munich coach Ottmar Hitzfeld saidWednesday he will decide in January whether or not to accept an offerto coach the Swiss national team.
Hitzfeld is seething following public criticism of his coaching ofGermany's top side by Bayern president Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
And he told Swiss paper L'Illustre: "When the club presidentpublicly criticises his coach, the pleasure (of doing the job) is nolonger the same. Especially when you've gone 24 matches unbeaten. AtBayern, things have got out of hand."
In recent days the Austrian press reported that Hitzfeld is beinglined up to succeed Italian Giovanni Trapattoni as Salzburg coach atthe end of the season.
And on Tuesday Hitzfeld himself fuelled speculation by stating thathe had been contacted by the Swiss football federation to lead theirteam after Euro 2008.
Hitzfeld added: "To work as coach of the Swiss national team hasalways interested me. The Bundesliga is not the be all and end all ...I will give my answer in January.
"I know the salary will not be on a par with Bundesliga wages, but for me that will not be a factor in my decision."
Bayern are top of the Bundesliga but have taken just ten points in their last seven league matches with only four goals scored.

Aberdeen set Bayern Munich test

Aberdeen have been drawn against the German giants Bayern Munich in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup. The winners of the Dons' tie with the German outfit tie will play Anderlecht or Bordeaux. The tie is a repeat of arguably the Pittodrie club's greatest cup run - when the Dons beat Bayern en-route to the Cup Winners' Cup triumph in 1983. Aberdeen's director of football Willie Miller said: "It's a reward for a fantastic achievement." Interview: Aberdeen director of football Willie Miller

Miller, who captained the Dons' side in 1983 when they faced the Germans, said he was looking forward to the game at Pittodrie. Miller said manager Jimmy Calderwood and the players should be congratulated for progressing to the knockout stage of the Uefa Cup.

"If we can repeat something along the same lines (as the Copenhagen win) then we can go into the game with confidence," said Miller. "But we are not kidding ourselves, Bayern are a top, top club." Calderwood's side secured their place in the knockout stages after a comprehensive 4-0 victory over FC Copenhagen at Pittodrie on Thursday. The Aberdeen boss described the win over the Danish side as the best night of his football career.

Bundesliga Mid-Season Review
As German football goes into winter hibernation mode, Goal.com takes a look at the Bundesliga抯 top-of-the-table picture.

They said it would all be over by Christmas.
Actually, I did too.  But t
his has been a great Hinrunde (first round of league fixtures) for the Bundesliga fan.

On the one hand we抳e had the joy of watching world-class individuals like Franck Rib閞y and Luca Toni ply their trade in Germany.
On the other hand we haven抰 seen Bayern run away with the title.

The Bundesliga is often scoffed at by fans of other leagues for being a one-team competition.
It抯 a misguided notion.

Not only did the Rekordmeister tumble to a lowly fourth placed finish last season, but they head into this year抯 winter break top only on goal difference.
Italy, Spain, England, France, Portugal
