Terry ready to let Beckham lead England again for good of the team

John Terry yesterday said he will gracefully concede the England captaincy to David Beckham if it helps the national team improve under the new manager, Fabio Capello.

The Italian will take charge of his first match when England play Switzerland at Wembley next month and one of his first decisions will be whether to retain Terry as the captain, or return the leadership to Beckham, should he be selected to win his 100th cap.

EXCLUSIVE McCLAREN'S FIRST INTERVIEW

Steve McClaren last night broke his silence to reveal he wants to make a dramatic return to football to restore his reputation and win back the England job.

Speaking for the first time since being sacked as national boss last November, McClaren gave his full backing to his successor Fabio Capello.

But he also insisted that once he has established himself as a leading club manager again, he would relish another crack at leading England and wiping out the memory of failing to qualify for this summer's European Championship in Austria and Switzerland.

McClaren said: "If the England job was offered to me tomorrow, I'd take it again.

"There is bound to be a feeling of unfinished business with England. First, I have got to rebuild again, wherever that may be.

"I have got to start from a different point and off we go again. I want my next job to be challenging and ambitious and allow me to get back to the top.

"The 18 months in the England job taught me a lot. I learned lessons and gained experience.

"Going through all that adversity, I know I am a better manager for that.

"I've worked at the top, I know how to manage, I've been successful and I know I can do it again. I am more ready to take on the challenge than 18 months ago.

"I believe I had grown into the England job. I just ran out of time. But I still believe I can manage at the top level."

McClaren's demeanour was remarkable for its lack of bitterness about the way his dream of taking England to this year's Euro 2008 tournament fell apart.

He said he had taken great encouragement from the way Sven Goran Eriksson has rehabilitated his reputation at Manchester City this season.

And he said he had no problem with the fact that the FA chose an Italian to follow him as boss of the England team.

"I just want the players to succeed," added McClaren. "So I don't care if it is an alien from outer space with three heads who is manager as long as they are successful.

"Capello has got the CV and the experience and he is probably the right age to take the job. We have to have the best man for the job."

Liverpool's Gerrard handed England captaincy
tribalfooball.com - February 01, 2008

Liverpool star Steven Gerrard will be Fabio Capello's new England captain.

The Sun says however the position of permanent England skipper is still up for grabs.

Boss Capello has settled on the experienced Liverpool midfielder as leader for his first game in charge against Switzerland at Wembley next Wednesday.

Gerrard, 27, was vice-captain to John Terry during Steve McClaren's England reign.

And with Chelsea centre-back Terry injured, Gerrard was always one of the hot favourites to take over.

But he is very much on trial and not guaranteed the job for next month's friendly in France.
