This year's 18th issue of Kodansha' Bessatsu Friend magazine has announced on Friday that a television drama series based on Tomoko Hayakawa's The Wallflower (Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge) manga has been green-lit for a January premiere. The story follows four teenaged "pretty boys" who are invited to stay at a posh mansion, free of charge—provided they can transform the owner's standoffish, weird niece into a proper young lady. More details about the drama version will be published in future issues of Bessatsu Friend.
The manga has been running in Bessatsu Friend since 2000, and 24 compiled book volumes have been published so far. Del Rey will publish the 22nd volume in North America next January. The story has already been adapted into a 2006-2007 25-episode television anime series, which ADV Films released on DVD.

Yukie Nakama's new TV drama suffers low rating
Yukie Nakama, the 30-year-old “queen of viewer ratings”’ has been chosen again to host the annual NHK “Kohaku Utagassen” program this year. Yet despite the actress’ popularity, her new TV drama is not faring too well. The TV Asahi series titled “Untouchable,” which began airing this month, is suffering unbelievably low ratings for the queen.
In the series, Nakama plays a tabloid news reporter who does just about anything from trespassing and shooting undercover photos in search of a scoop, solving crimes and mysteries at the same time. The new TV drama was promoted at a media conference held in early October as a story with a “well thought out plot” and Nakama herself emphasized how excited she was to play the lead role.
In spite of the advertisement, the rating for the first show was 11.6%, falling to 9.7% and 6.2% by the third episode in the Kanto area. According to a source working at TV Asahi’s production department, “The ratings are so poor that ordinarily we would consider canceling it altogether, midseason or not. But it’s just not possible, considering Nakama’s contribution to the success of ‘TRICK’ (which aired in 2000), and while plans are under way for a third movie version of this story. Under the circumstances, there’s no way we can do anything that would offend her. In fact, any talk about TV viewer ratings is practically a taboo now.”
Thus, any mention of ratings has become the “untouchable” topic among the “Untouchable” staff. How ironic. TV Asahi’s public relations department stated they had nothing to say about measures to improve the ratings.
A program crew member says that Nakama’s commitment as the lead actress extends to memorizing all the lines in the script, including those of her co-actors. Let’s just hope that her effort will be rewarded.

Just how popular is Johnny's heartthrob Yamashita Tomohisa (24) right now? Well the media are making a lot of the fact that he already has another prime time drama scheduled for January, just two seasons after his latest headliner. He played the lead role of a basketball player in the summer Fuji TV drama series "Buzzer Beat - Gakepuchi no Hero," which aired in the "golden" Monday 9pm time slot. Oguri Shun now occupies the autumn slot with the drama "Tokyo Dogs," but will hand over to the second series of Fuji's "Code Blue - Doctor Heli Kinkyu-kyumei" in January. This is described as the first time it has happened since the time slot became a fixture for the most popular drama series in 1987. And the return of Code Blue, in which "Yama-P" plays a medical helicopter pilot cadet, is in itself an indication of the popularity of its star. The show also has some hot young female stars, including Aragaki Yui (21), Toda Erika (21), and Higa Manami (23). But perhaps the biggest indicator of Yama-P's popularity is the fact that his image barely appears on the Fuji website for the show. A Google search reveals only distorted images from the original series or scans of DVD covers and the like. That's how protective Johnnys are of their hottest properties.

The sequel to the dorama series "Bloody Monday" finally got confirmed via the newest edition of the Shonen Magazine. They are currently publishing the 2nd season of the manga and put up a 1-page ad confirming that the sequel is underway and will start airing in January.
The main cast will basically stay the same except for a few. Confirmed so far are Miura Haruma, Sato Takeru, Kichise Michiko, Matsushige Yutaka, Ashina Sei, Kawashima Umika, Narimiya Hiroki, Kurokawa Tomoka, Takashima Masahiro and Yoshizawa Yuu.
 
With this there are only a few free slots left for the upcoming season. Netizens are speculating that Shinohara Ryoko might get a shot at the Wednesday 10pm slot on NTV, but those are mere speculations without any evidence. Ueto Aya has been in the talks for that time frame as well. Another interesting dorama spot is going to be Tuesday 9pm on Fuji TV.
Eikura Nana is leading the speculations, whether that’s going to be as the starring actress or the heroine. A recent single post on 2ch made some blogs believe that she might take a part in a Japanese adaption of popular Korean drama "Coffee Prince" next to Tamaki Hiroshi, but so far there’s only one anonymous post supporting this rumor.

Peace Maker Kurogane Gets TV Drama Series Green-Light
The Oricon marketing survey firm reports that a drama series adaptation of Nanae Chrono's Peacemaker Kurogane supernatural samurai manga has been green-lit for a January 2010 premiere on the TBS/MBS television network in Japan. The story centers around a short 15-year-old boy named Tetsunosuke Ichimura who attempts to join the legendary samurai of Shinsengumi as part of his plan to avenge his murdered parents. However, he learns that he must become a demon to join this group.
The drama's producers are holding an open casting call for both professional and amateur actors. Male and female performers between 15 and 29 years old are encouraged to apply. After the television drama series ends, the drama's cast will form the core of the planned stage adaptation.
ADV Manga published the first volumes of the Peacemaker Kurogane manga, while Tokyopop published the original Shinsengumi Immon Peace Maker manga that preceded the Kurogane version. After ADV Manga stopped publishing Peacemaker Kurogane, Tokyopop licensed and re-released this sequel series. ADV Manga's sister division ADV Films also released the 2003-2004 television anime adaptation.

Final "Hagure Keiji Junjoha" episode to air in December

TV Asahi's long-running detective drama series "Hagure Keiji Junjoha" will come to an end next month with its final special episode. The show ran for 18 seasons between 1988 and 2005, including several special episodes since 1999 aired at the start or end of the year.
The show's protagonist is played by veteran actor Makoto Fujita (76), who was recently removed from the cast of TBS's "JIN" due to his treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Fujita's health does not affect the "Hagure Keiji Junjoha" special, which was already filmed in June.
This special, which will be the drama's 444th episode, deals with the murder of a female lawyer. TV Asahi will air the episode at 9:00pm on December 26.

Nagasaku leads "Hebi no Hito" drama special

Actress Hiromi Nagasaku (39) has been cast in the starring role of the suspense drama special "Hebi no Hito," based on the story that won the 2nd WOWOW Scenario Prize.
Nagasaku plays an OL searching for one of her superiors (Hidetoshi Nishijima), who has mysteriously disappeared and is suspected of embezzlement and murder. Other cast members include Jun Kunimura, Masanobu Katsumura, Itsuji Itao, Hitori Gekidan, and Kei Tanaka. Junichi Mori ("Gravity Clown") is directing.
WOWOW plans to broadcast "Hebi no Hito" in early 2010.

Actress Meisa Kuroki (21) has been chosen to play the heroine role in the Fuji TV drama special "Saigo no Yakusoku." It was recently announced that the drama will star all five members of Arashi.
"Saigo no Yakusoku" is described as a human suspense story involving the hijack of a major building. The members of Arashi play five young men who happen to be inside, and the story depicts their attempt to escape and their interactions with the other people caught up in the incident.
Kuroki plays the daughter of the building's company president. One scene features an argument between her character and Jun Matsumoto (26), who plays a motorcycle courier.
Fuji TV plans to broadcast the drama near the start of 2010.

Yoko Moriguchi stars in "Indigo no Yoru" host club drama

Miaki Kato's novel series "Indigo no Yoru" ("Tough Nights of Club Indigo") is being turned into a daytime drama series on Fuji TV this winter.
Yoko Moriguchi (43) stars as a woman who was previously a successful editor at a major publisher. One day, her fiance suddenly disappeared, and an embezzlement incident later led her to lose her job. She ended up as the manager of Club Indigo, an unusual host club in Shibuya. With various incidents happening around the club, she and her hosts work together like a team of amateur detectives to solve the cases.
Seiji Rokkaku (47) plays the owner of the club, while Kazuki Kato (25) plays another manager. The rest of the club's staff will be played by Masato Wada (30), Kosei Amano (31), Motoki Fukami (29), Masaki Kaji (21), Kanna Mori (21), Yoichiro Tamaari (29), twins Manpei and Shinpei Takagi (24), Akihiro Mayama (21), and Kotaro Tanaka (26).
Hidenori Tokuyama (27), Tatsuya Gashuin (59), and Takeshi Masu (53) also appear in the drama.
The series will air on weekday afternoons at 1:30pm, starting on January 5. A total of 64 episodes are planned, with each case lasting about 5 episodes.
It has also been decided already that "Indigo no Yoru" will be adapted as a stage play, starting on April 30 at the New National Theatre Tokyo.

"Tenchijin" closes at 22.7%

The popular NHK taiga drama "Tenchijin," starring Satoshi Tsumabuki (28), ended its broadcast run this past Sunday. Ratings for the final episode were 22.7% in the Kanto region and 19.4% in the Kansai region. Overall, the series averaged 21.2% (20% in Kansai) over its 47 episodes.
The first episode of "Tenchijin" in January garnered 24.7% ratings in the Kanto area, outperforming last year's "Atsuhime," starring Aoi Miyazaki (23), which started out at 20.3%. However, in the end "Tenchijin" could not keep up, falling short of the 24.5% series average achieved by "Atsuhime."

Itsuji Itao gets first lead role in drama series

This winter, Itsuji Itao (46) will take on his first starring role in a drama series. He has been chosen to lead NTV's tentatively-titled "Kinoshita Bucho to Boku," scheduled to start in January.
Itao has acted in many dramas and movies, and even directed and starred in a film that will be released early next year. However, he has not starred in a TV series before this.
In the drama, Itao plays Kinoshita, an irresponsible and unreliable division chief at an advertising firm who regularly comes in late, leaves early, and dozes off at work. But somehow, his unexpected ideas end up solving difficult problems at work for the elite employee Kimishima (Shin Takuma). Naoki Tanaka (38), Kyoko Toyama (34), Maiko Yamada (28), and Yoshimi Tokui (34) have also been cast in the show.
    
NTV has scheduled the series in the Thursday 11:58pm time slot. The first episode will start half an hour later.

Keiko Kitagawa to play deaf role in "Hitsudan Hostess" drama

Rising actress Keiko Kitagawa (23) will star in a drama special on TBS titled "Hitsudan Hostess." The story is based on the bestselling autobiography of 25-year-old Rie Saito, who became a number-one hostess in Ginza despite being deaf.
"Hitsudan Hostess" was published by Kobunsha this past May, and so far it has sold roughly 115,000 copies. The book depicts the life of Saito, who was born in Aomori and became deaf at the age of 1 due to an illness. She rebelled against her strict parents, and she ran away from home several times as a youth. At a local club, she began taking an interest in "hitsudan" (communicating through writing), which she later made use of when she moved to Tokyo and became a popular hostess at a Ginza club.
Kitagawa will play the part of Saito in the drama, with Yoshiko Tanaka (53) playing her mother. Kitagawa's role will be difficult as it has almost no lines, requiring her to express herself in a different way. Incidentally, the actress already has a strong interest in writing, as she learned calligraphy at a young age.
The show, scheduled to air in January, will include an introduction by Saito herself.

Nana Eikura gets bullied in Fuji TV workplace drama

Fuji TV has unveiled another drama series for next season, titled "Nakanai to Kimeta Hi." Actress Nana Eikura (21) will be the star of the show, playing an office lady for the first time.
Eikura plays a graduate of a second-rate university who manages to find a job at a top-notch company. But after a minor mistake, she becomes the subject of serious bullying by her superiors and other co-workers. Ultimately, she chooses to endure the harassment, not wanting to simply run away from it.
    
Naohito Fujiki, Jun Kaname, Anne, Yasunori Danta, and Yoshino Kimura are part of the supporting cast. Fuji TV will broadcast the series at 9:00pm on Tuesday nights, beginning in January.

Viewers rush to TV station's website to buy clothes seen in drama

An actress starring in a weekly TV drama wrapped up her performance in the first episode Oct 13 with an unusual plug that sent viewers racing to the television station’s website.
“I have wonderful news,” she said. “You can get the clothes we wore in the drama.”
Those who checked out the home page of Kansai Telecasting Corp in Osaka, which produced and broadcast the program “Real Clothes,” did not find any giveaways. They instead were diverted to a mail order site.
The drama is set in the women’s clothing section in a department store, where the heroine struggles with work, relationships and fashion, and grows as a person.
This show has been attracting attention because its stars include TV celebrities Karina, Anna Nose and Erena, who are sisters in real life, and Imalu, the daughter of popular comedian Samma Akashiya and his former wife, actress Shinobu Otake.
The show has also been recognized for its unique ploy of marketing to viewers the outfits worn by its actors and actresses via the show’s website.
Immediately after the end of the first episode, the website received about 20,000 hits, crashing the server.
About 350 items, including dresses and necklaces, were sold out.
The Osaka TV station said the actress made the announcement as a service to viewers after there was a flood of inquiries about the clothing that was being worn on the program.
“The purpose of the announcement is to let viewers enjoy the show even more. The program is not aimed at selling merchandise,” said an official of the TV station’s public relations department.
The TV station’s view was echoed by Lucky Shokai, a jewelry maker in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, that provides accessories for the show.
“The characteristic of Japanese people is that they want to put on things that other people have,” the jeweler said in a statement. “We benefit from having our accessories used on the program.”
Hono Tajima, program director of the National Association of Commercial Broadcasters in Japan, called the Osaka broadcaster’s decision to allow the actress to make the announcement “an attempt aimed at putting digital broadcasting to practical use.”
An association guideline asks members not to make programs that can be mistaken as advertisements so viewers won’t be confused.
Tajima said he does not see the marketing ploy by the program as crossing the guideline, but the association will continue to monitor how viewers respond to the clothing overture.
But Hiroyoshi Sunakawa, an associate professor at Rikkyo University specializing in media theory, pointed out that television stations have used the merchandise of sponsors as props for programs, but the actress’ pitch represents a step further.
It is necessary for the television station to carefully explain the difference between the program and a commercial to avoid confusing viewers, he said, warning that excessive interference by business will mean a loss of confidence in the media.
