Matsuyuki stars in "Mother"
Thu, February 18, 2010 (4:05am EST)

Yasuko Matsuyuki (37) will star in an NTV drama series this spring, titled "Mother." As the title suggests, the drama will carry a theme of motherhood, but it will have an element of suspense.

Matsuyuki, who is a mother herself, plays the part of Nao Suzuhara, an elementary school teacher. When she realizes that one of the female students is receiving abuse from her mother, Nao's maternal instincts kick in, and she impulsively decides to bring the girl into her own care. Serving as a substitute mother, Nao takes the child on a trip from Hokkaido to Tokyo, and the two experience various events together along the way.

The story is based on an original script by Yuji Sakamoto ("Tokyo Love Story," "Watashitachi no Kyoukasho") and co-directed by Nobuo Mizuta ("Maiko Haaaan!!!") and Makoto Naganuma. Filming will begin later this month in Hokkaido.

NTV will broadcast the show on Wednesdays at 10:00pm, beginning in April.

Ueno Juri is Ready to Gou

We're only halfway into February but NHK have already announced the first details of next year's taiga series. The public network's annual drama airs on Sunday nights for almost the whole year and is based around a single historical figure. In this year's "Ryomaden," that figure is Sakamoto Ryoma (1836-67), the samurai who helped lead Japan out of centuries of isolation. The 2011 taiga returns to a more feminine theme that has been the focus in several recent series - the ladies of the royal court. Popular actress Ueno Juri (23) will play the princess Gou (1573-1626), third daughter of warlord Azai Nagamasa (1545-73). Gou was married three times to various offspring of the legendary Toyotomi and Tokugawa warlord clans. As the wife of shogun Tokugawa Hidetada (1579-1632), she created the "Ohku" or inner palace at the Edo Castle, with its intricate web of female intrigue.

Ueno has established herself as a talented actress, particularly in the Fuji TV dramatization of the "Nodame Cantabile" manga and a subsequent big screen adaptation. Like Gou, she is a third daughter and found that she identifies with the role. "In the script, she is strong willed and really speaks her mind. I might be like that!" But she has a lot of preparation to do for the role before filming starts in August. "I'd never watched a taiga series or performed in a period drama. So I recently started watching Ryomaden." Though she shares the same management agency with its star, Fukuyama Masaharu (41), she has never met or even seen him. So she was delighted when he sent her a message of encouragement for her upcoming challenge.

Kato, Katase co-star in golf drama
Tue, February 23, 2010 (1:05am EST)

NTV is broadcasting a golf-themed drama series this spring, titled "Pro Golfer Hana." Co-stars Rosa Kato (24) and Nana Katase (28) have been earnestly preparing for their parts through lessons from professional golf teachers.

With the popularity of young stars like Ryo Ishikawa (18) and Ai Miyazato (24), golf has been enjoying a boom in Japan. It is even reported that the term "golkon" ("golf" plus "goukon") has started spreading among young adults, referring to a golf-themed group date.

In the comedic "Pro Golfer Hana," Kato plays Hana Nomiya, a young woman aiming to become a professional golfer for the sake of her family and their debt. Katase, on the other hand, plays the gifted golfer Riko Takase, a wealthy young lady who detests poverty.

Kato actually started golfing about two or three years ago on her own, but she said she became frustrated by her lack of progress. Along with Katase, who is a complete beginner, she started training for the drama around the end of last year. Producers are hoping to film the golf scenes without having to use stand-ins for the two actresses.

"Pro Golfer Hana" will be aired on Thursdays at 11:58pm. The first episode is scheduled for April 8.

Namase takes spotlight in "Trick" spinoff drama
Tue, February 23, 2010 (1:28am EST)

A few months ago, it was announced that the television drama franchise "Trick" is getting its third theatrical film this spring. Now, it has been revealed that it will also get its first spinoff drama series, focusing on the character played by Katsuhisa Namase (49).

"Keibuho Yabe Kenzo" will be the first starring role for Namase in a television series. In the "Trick" dramas and movies, which revolved around the mystery-solving duo of amateur magician Naoko Yamada (Yukie Nakama) and university professor Jiro Ueda (Hiroshi Abe), Namase played the odd wig-wearing detective Kenzo Yabe. His character attracted many fans, who have voiced plenty of requests for a spinoff.

In "Keibuho Yabe Kenzo," the detective will have to tackle difficult cases on his own, without the help of Yamada and Ueda. His supporting cast includes Tetsuhiro Ikeda (39) and Shihori Kanjiya (24).

TV Asahi has scheduled the series for its Friday 11:15pm time slot, with the first episode airing in April. The "Trick" movie opens in theaters on May 8.

Kimutaku to star in new romance series
Tue, March 2, 2010 (1:46am EST)

Fuji TV's next Monday night drama will star the popular Takuya Kimura (37). Although several of his dramas during the past decade have had elements of romance, this one is being described as the first one centered on a love story since "Beautiful Life" in 2000.

The new drama, which is currently untitled, has Kimura playing a company president for the first time in his acting career. However, Fuji TV has chosen not to reveal any other details right now, so the network seems to be holding back for a big announcement about the drama in the near future.

The series is expected to start in April, but a May premiere seems to also be a possibility.
