Melamine Found In Snickers, Kit Kat Products From China

SEOUL, Oct 4 (Bernama) -- South Korea's food watchdog said on Saturday that it has detected quantities of melamine in chocolate products from foodstuff giants Nestle SA and Mars Inc. that were manufactured in China.

The Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) said 2.38 parts per million (ppm) and 1.78 ppm of the toxic substance was discovered in samples of M&M's Milk and Peanut Snickers Fun Size products, respectively, from Mars Korea.

A Kit Kat bar from Nestle Korea was also found to contain 2.89 ppm of melamine, South Korea's Yonhap news agency quoted the agency as saying on Saturday.

The latest discoveries brings the local number of tainted food items to 10 amid a broadening scandal over Chinese dairy products.

Melamine is a nitrogen-based chemical that can pose serious health risks if ingested frequently or in large quantities. It is used widely in kitchen utensils, but if added to food items the nitrogen can artificially increase protein levels, translating into higher prices.

Chinese health officials have said the use of melamine in dairy products has killed at least four infants and left 54,000 others ailing from kidney stones or other illnesses.

The KFDA is currently in the process of examining 428 processed foods manufactured in China to see whether they contain the hazardous substance. It has completed checking 288 products as of Saturday morning.

– AFP

China tries to contain tainted milk fallout

AFP Photo South Korean health officials inspect cakes made by a Korean plant in China. China is continuing to struggle to contain the fall-out from the tainted milk scandal, announcing a new survey of dairy products that found no melamine and promising to subsidise farmers hit by the scare.

BEIJING (AFP) - China attempted Sunday to contain the fallout from the tainted milk scandal, announcing a new survey of dairy products showed no traces of melamine and promising to subsidise farmers hit by the scare.

The latest test of more than 600 batches of liquid milk from 27 cities across China showed they were free of melamine, the industrial chemical at the centre of the dairy scare, the Beijing Morning Post reported.

Products made by 75 brands were sampled including prominent ones such as Yili, Mengniu and Bright Dairy, the paper said, citing the nation's product safety watchdog.

It was the sixth round of tests in China since the milk scare broke last month, according to the watchdog, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

Melamine, which has been detected in a range of China-made milk products, is blamed for the deaths of four Chinese children and for sickening 53,000.

The chemical is used to make plastics but when mixed with watered-down milk, it makes it appear richer in protein than it actually is.

Authorities suspect the contamination may have occurred at thousands of milk collection stations scattered across the country, as they are relatively new players in the dairy business and have not been subject to full supervision.

Since the scandal erupted and spread around the world, the agriculture ministry has dispatched 152,000 officials and investigated nearly 19,000 milk collection stations, the People's Daily reported Sunday.

In northern Hebei province, officials had recalled 451 tonnes of milk powder from Sanlu Group, the company whose tainted baby formula triggered the crisis, and destroyed 300 tonnes, the Beijing Evening News said Sunday.

Meanwhile, the agriculture ministry said on its website late Saturday it was supervising a campaign to subsidise dairy farmers badly hit by the crisis.

Farmers had been dumping raw milk as the scandal sent demand plummeting, the ministry said.

"On the one hand we must crack down on illegal behaviour but on the other hand we must protect the interests of the dairy sector," it said in a statement.

"We must do our best to minimise the dumping of milk and we must resolutely prevent the killing of cows."

The ministry said it had achieved some success in restoring consumer confidence, citing 14 local governments that had come up with policies to stabilise the dairy industry.

It mentioned Hebei province, which had earmarked 316 million yuan (46 million dollars) in subsidies, paying farmers 200 yuan for each cow.

While China was seeking to repair the damage at home, the wave of recalls and warnings rolled on abroad.

In Hong Kong, the Centre for Food Safety said Sunday that two types of chocolate from British sweet maker Cadbury were found to contain dangerous amounts of melamine.

In one of the products, Cadbury's Dairy Milk Hazelnut Chocolate sold in bulk packs, the melamine level was more than 22 times the legal limit, the centre said in a statement.

Authorities in Myanmar urged people not to consume Chinese milk and dairy products after 16 tonnes of Chinese baby formula tainted with melamine was destroyed, the state newspaper New Light of Myanmar reported Sunday.

Guyana pulled Chinese dairy products off the market on Saturday, while South Korea ordered Mars and Nestle to withdraw three products after melamine was detected in snacks made in China by the multinationals.

A fourth Chinese milk product found to contain melamine was withdrawn from sale in Australia, Food Standards Australia New Zealand said in a statement.

Australia has already banned China's creamy White Rabbit chocolates, and a Japanese importer has also begun recalling another brand of Chinese chocolate suspected of being contaminated.

The European Union recently banned all imports on Chinese milk-related products for children such as biscuits and chocolate on top of a long-standing embargo on Chinese dairy products like milk and yoghurt.

Pengawasan 24 jam di kilang tenusu China
06/10/2008

BEIJING 6 Okt.

China mahu bersihkan skandal susu tercemar

– AFP

Melamine is an organic base and a trimer of cyanamide, with a 1,3,5-triazine skeleton. Like cyanamide, it contains 66% nitrogen by mass and, if mixed with resins, has fire retardant properties due to its release of nitrogen gas when burned or charred, and has several other industrial uses. Melamine is also a metabolite of cyromazine, a pesticide. It is formed in the body of mammals who have ingested cyromazine.

It has been reported that cyromazine can also be converted to melamine in plants.
Melamine combines with cyanuric acid to form melamine cyanurate, which has been implicated in the Chinese protein export contaminations.

Uses

Melamine is combined with formaldehyde to produce melamine resin, a very durable thermosetting plastic, and melamine foam, a polymeric cleaning product. The end products include countertops, dry erase boards, fabrics, glues, housewares and flame retardants. Melamine is one of the major components in Pigment Yellow 150, a colorant in inks and plastics.

Melamine also enters the fabrication of melamine poly-sulfonate used as superplasticizer for making high-resistance concrete. Sulfonated melamine formaldehyde (SMF) is a polymer used as cement admixture to reduce the water content in concrete while increasing the fluidity and the workability of the mix during its handling and pouring.

It results in concrete with a lower porosity and a higher mechanical strength exhibiting an improved resistance to aggressive environments and a longer life-time.

The use of melamine as fertilizer for crops had been envisaged during the '50s and '60s because of its high nitrogen content (2/3). However, the hydrolysis reactions of melamine leading to the nitrogen mineralisation in soils are very slow, precluding a broad use of melamine as fertilizing agent.

Melamine derivatives of arsenical drugs are potentially important in the treatment of African trypanosomiasis.

Melamine use as non-protein nitrogen (NPN) for cattle was described in a 1958 patent. In 1978, however, a study concluded that melamine "may not be an acceptable non-protein N source for ruminants" because its hydrolysis in cattle is slower and less complete than other nitrogen sources such as cottonseed meal and urea.

Melamine is sometimes illegally added to food products in order to increase the apparent protein content. Standard tests such as the Kjeldahl and Dumas tests estimate protein levels by measuring the nitrogen content, so they can be misled by adding nitrogen-rich compounds such as melamine.

- AP
