Volvo turns on the attitude
If handsome cars like the new Volvo S80, C70 and XC90 have not already done so, the Malaysian launch of the sexy all-new C30 coupe last Monday should kill off, once and for all, the old perception that the Swedish cars are safe but oh-so boxy and boring.
Henceforth, anyone who mentions "boring" and "square" in the same breath as Volvo risks being perceived to be talking about himself.
Drool on those sexy headlamps
Yes, the C30 has all the safety devices and technology you can think of, and many that you could not possibly have dreamed of.
But it is also loaded with attitude, with a capital "A". And, it is arguably the sleekest, sportiest car sprung on Malaysians by any marque for quite some time.
On looks alone, it should be perfectly capable of taking on the likes of the MINI and BMW's 1 Series.
Volvo designers did not have to reinvent the wheel in crafting this handsome two-door newcomer. They just tool a long hard look at the classic Volvo P1800 ES and drew a bit more inspiration from the modern Safety Concept Car.
You really need a second glance on this one
The aggressive front end with its large, low grille, spoiler and short overhang, headlamps set high in the wings, all these design features grab your attention immediately, even if you weren't looking in its direction.
The sweeping silhouette of the body sides is emphasised by black wing extenders at each corner and the strong shoulder line is beefier than that on any other Volvo model to date.
But the rear end treatment is where the C30 really stands out from the crowd. The shape of the tail lamp clusters delineates that characteristic shoulder profile, especially in the dark.
Performance should be as hot as its looks suggest, compliments of the 2.4l in-line five-cylinder engine that churns out 170bhp (at 6,000rpm) and 230Nm of torque (at 4,400 rpm), channelled through a five-speed Geartronic automatic transmission (with manual control option).
Sporty, and of course, functionality
The interior shares the cool floating centre console similar to that first seen on the S40, matched to a new tunnel console and armrest.
In the rear passenger compartment, the C30 is equipped with two individual seats for maximum comfort.
While practicality may not be the top priority for someone buying a two-door car, the seat backrests can be folded down to provide a large, almost completely flat load floor. The backrests can also be lowered from outside (with the hatch open).
Pop-up the boot and it could kill a bird
The luggage compartment can be equipped with two different luggage blinds - a soft type (standard in certain markets) that can be used with the backrests up or down, and a rigid type that is mounted behind the upright backrests. The front seats are easy to fold down, making access to the rear even easier.
One of the pioneering features of the C30 is the optional BLIS (Blind Spot Information System), which uses video cameras built into the side mirrors to detect vehicles in the usual blind spots and warn the driver with flashing indicators.
A combo of all its siblings, the rear is
A host of other safety features are bundled in the C30, including Volvo's Intelligent Driver Information System (IDIS), ABS, Dynamic Stability Traction Control, and the Whiplash Protection System and Side Impact Protection System with side airbags and inflatable curtain are also standard.
The fully imported C30 comes with a price tag RM215,500, on the road, without insurance.
