Too much melamine found in 18 types of biscuits
Friday October 17, 2008
Link to original article
PUTRAJAYA: Eighteen types of biscuits bearing the Khong Guan and KhianGuan brands have been found to contain excessive levels of melamine.
Health Minister Datuk Liow Tiong Lai said the contamination is from theraising agent ammonium bicarbonate from China which was used to producethe biscuits.
Quick action: Sundryshopowner, Tan, said she would remove the biscuits from her shelveseven though she has yet to hear from them.
|
As a result, Liow said, ammonium bicarbonate from China was now banned.Ammonium bicarbonate from other countries would be taken for tests.
“Results from our tests found that the melaminelevel in the ammonium carbonate used for Khong Guan and Khian Guanbiscuits is 33.4ppm and 508ppm respectively,” he told a pressconference on Thursday.
The permissible level of melamine is 2.5 parts per million (ppm).
He said 18 out of 47 products had been found with excessive levels of melamine and the manufacturer has been instructed to recall them.
“We have also requested that they voluntarily recall the rest of their products,” he said.
“All factories that use ammonium bicarbonate from China will have theirproducts tested. We will test all biscuits in the country,” he said.
Earlier, the ministry had found Ego White Rabbit Creamy Candy and Taro brand biscuit by Bairong to contain excessive levels of melamine and ordered that the products be withdrawn.
He said the ministry was checking Julie’s Crackers and Mali unsweetenedcondensed milk which was reported in the media to contain excessivelevels of melamine.
Liow said consumers could contact the Food Services and Quality division at 03-8883 3655/3503/3652/3500 for information.
Khong Guan Sdn Bhd and Khian Guan Biscuit Manufacturing Company SdnBhd, in a joint statement, said they would fully cooperate with theministry and would ensure that the products were recalled quickly.
The two companies said they have ceased using ammonium bicarbonate fromChina and had switched to those sourced from other countries.
“Khian Guan and Khong Guan have never used any dairy ingredients ofChinese origin in our products. All our dairy ingredients are sourcedfrom either Australia or New Zealand,” they added.

Melamine bahaya!
CAP warns of melamine tableware
PENANG: They may look good on the dining table, but the Consumers
Association of Penang (CAP) has warned the public against using
melamine tableware.
CAP president S. M. Mohamed Idris said studies conducted abroad
revealed that melamine tableware contained substances that were
hazardous to health.
"Many are not aware that melamine melts when exposed to high
temperatures, causing parts of the substance to enter our body along
with the food.
"Regular ingestion of melamine can lead to cancer, skin allergies and
blindness," he said at a press conference here.
Melamine, also known as thermo set plastic, is made of urea, an
organic compound, and formaldehyde, a chemical widely used to
manufacture household products.
Mohamed Idris said melamine tableware was popular and commonly used to
serve hot food in households, restaurants and food stalls.
"We are calling on consumers to refrain from using melamine tableware
and use safer tableware made from glass or ceramic," he said.
He added that CAP was also urging the government to consider banning
the use of melamine in tableware production.

WHAT IS MELAMINE???
MelamineMelamine is an organic compound that is often combined with formaldehyde to produce melaminemelaminemelamine resin, a synthetic polymer which is fire resistant and heat tolerant. MelamineMelamineMelamine resin is a very versatile material with a highly stable structure. Uses for melaminemelaminemelamine include whiteboards, floor tiles, kitchenware, fire retardant fabrics, and commercial filters. MelamineMelamineMelamine can be easily molded while warm, but will set into a fixed form. This property makes it ideally suited to certain industrial applications.
MelamineMelamineMelamine resin is manufactured by mixing urea with formaldehyde under heat and pressure. The substances begin to polymerize and are forced into a mold which will create the desired shape. Under pressure, melaminemelaminemelamine releases water, which could make the plastic unstable if it is not removed. The materials finish polymerizing and create a finished product, melaminemelaminemelamine resin.
MelamineMelamineMelamine resin is known as a thermoset plastic, because the plastic is fixed after molding. If exposed to enough heat, melaminemelaminemelamine will melt. For this reason, melaminemelaminemelamine dishware should not be exposed to high temperatures like those in the oven and microwave. However, the plastic is able to withstand higher temperatures than other plastics. Because it is a thermoset plastic, melaminemelaminemelamine resin is difficult to recycle.
MelamineMelamineMelamine can be made into a foam product. MelamineMelamineMelamine foam has a distinctive structure composed of stacked bubble shapes, which are extremely hard and therefore can easily clean a wide variety of substances. MelamineMelamineMelamine foam is marketed under a variety of commercial names including Magic Eraser, a cleaning tool well known for removing scuffs and dirt from a wide range of surfaces.
MelamineMelamineMelamine resin is used in Formica and similar construction products made from composite materials. Formica is made using melaminemelaminemelamine resin, which is used to coat the fibers in the upper layer of the construction product. The melaminemelaminemelamine resin makes the end result heat resistant, so that hot objects can be set on the counter without concern. The surface of the material is designed to be easily wiped and cleaned, creating a long lived household product.
MelamineMelamineMelamine also plays a role in a wide range of flame resistant materials. These include textiles used in upholstery and the uniforms worn by firemen. Thermal liners, heat resistant gloves, and aprons to protect from splashback of hot substances are made using melaminemelaminemelamine. MelamineMelamineMelamine will protect a wearer from heat hazards, and will help to resist the spread of fire in aircraft and buses by providing a fire blocker.
MelamineMelamineMelamine is also used in the manufacture of some filters. The material is porous and will admit substances to pass through, but can be used to filter out particles of a particular size. MelamineMelamineMelamine filters are capable of handling a high capacity and can be used in hot environments due to the heat resistance of melaminemelaminemelamine. MelamineMelamineMelamine filters are also extremely efficient.
Aside from common commercial uses, melaminemelaminemelamine became a topic of much discussion in early 2007, when veterinary scientists determined it to be the cause of hundreds of pet deaths, because of pet food contamination. Prior to these reports, melaminemelaminemelamine had been regarded as non-toxic or minimally toxic. However, because of the unexplained presence of melaminemelaminemelamine in wheat gluten added to mass-produced dog and cat foods, it is the most likely cause. Pet owners report symptoms that are commonly associated with renal failure, which could be explained by the ammonia that may result from the digestion of the melaminemelaminemelamine. |

Latest test results for melamine
The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) today (October 18) released the latest batch of results of melamine tests.
Results available today showed that of the 66 samples tested, 64 weresatisfactory. These included milk and milk beverages, cream, instantdrink mixes, biscuits and cakes.
Two samples were found unsatisfactory. Details are as follows:
1)Munchy’s Mini Crackers with Peanut Butter (net weight: 45g, expirydate: 15.7.2009). The level of melamine detected was 5.4ppm.
2)Munchy’s Mini Crackers with Cheese Cream (net weight: 45g, expiry date:15.7.2009). The level of melamine detected was 3.8ppm.
Under theHarmful Substances in Food (Amendment) Regulation 2008, the legal limitfor melamine in the concerned products is 2.5ppm.
"We haveinformed the food trade of the test results and asked them to stopselling the products with unsatisfactory results. We have also sentwarning letters to the retailer and the importer concerned. The CFSwill take out prosecution if there is sufficient evidence," a spokesmanfor the CFS said.
According to the standards of the US Food andDrug Administration, the safety reference value (i.e. tolerable dailyintake - TDI) for melamine is 0.63mg per kg of body weight per day. Forchildren under the age of three years, who are more sensitive tomelamine, the TDI for melamine is 0.32mg per kg of body weight per day.Transient excursion above the TDI of melamine would have no healthconsequences provided that the average intake over a long period hasnot exceeded the TDI.
On the sample of "Munchy’s Mini Crackerswith Peanut Butter” which was detected with a melamine level of 5.4ppm, the spokesman said a child weighing 10kg (about three years old)would have to eat about 0.59kg (about 13 packs) of the product a day toreach the TDI. An adult with average body weight of 60kg would need toconsume about 7 kg (about 156 packs) of the product a day beforereaching the TDI.
On the sample of " Munchy’s Mini Crackers withCheese Cream” which was detected with a melamine level of 3.8 ppm, thespokesman said a child weighing 10kg (about three years old) would haveto eat about 0.84kg (about 19 packs) of the product a day to reach theTDI. An adult with average body weight of 60kg would need to consumeabout 9.9 kg (about 221 packs) of the product a day before reaching theTDI.
"Based on the levels detected, people are advised to stop consuming the products concerned," the spokesman said.
"We will continue to collect samples of dairy products and productswith dairy ingredients for testing," a spokesman for the CFS said.
"Test results for some biscuits, cakes, puddings, pudding powder, milkand instant drink mixes will be available on Monday." |

Friday October 24, 2008 Melamine is safe, but not too much, please
PETALING JAYA: Melamine is safe unless taken in excessive amounts and it will be expelled by the body in less than four hours.
UniversityCollege London trained chemist Datuk Dr Neoh Soon Bin said thecontroversiol compound was at least two times less toxic than aspirinused in painkillers, 16 times less than caffeine and 63 times less thannicotine if consumed at the same levels.
“This means that a 15kgchild would have to take 9.5mg of melamine for it to have toxiceffects,” he said during a media briefing jointly organised by variousbiscuit manufacturers yesterday.
He said that if a 70kg adultate 44kg of biscuits in a day, it would still be within theinternational safety limits of melamine intake.
“If you ate thatmuch biscuits in a day, you could die from a heart attack, not frommelamine,” he said, adding that the average Malaysian ate only 2.1kgof biscuits per year.
On whether melamine was poisonous by itself, he said it was not.
Neohadded that the US Food and Drug Administration had also found thatpork, chicken, fish and eggs from animals fed withmelamine-contaminated feed were unlikely to be a health risk to humans.
However,he urged the Government and food industry players to set up morestringent risk-analysis programmes to screen threats to the country’sfood sources.
This, he said, included requiring certificates ofanalysis and letters of guarantee of ingredients, packaging materialand manufacturing processes of food products from outside the country.
InKuching, Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Namsaid food manufacturers and processors were duty-bound to produce foodthat met minimum safety standards.
Many of them still took foodquality and safety for granted, he said when opening a goodmanufacturing practices seminar here yesterday. |

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong says Chinese eggs have been found with excessive amounts of the industrial chemical melamine.
The government said late yesterday it found melamine in the eggsproduced by a division of China's Dalian Hanwei Enterprise Group basedin the northeastern port city Dalian.
It said the melamine may have come from fertilizer fed to the chickens that laid the eggs.
Melamine is used in the manufacturing of plastics, fertilizer, paint and adhesives.
China has been caught in a food safety scandal over dairy products tainted with melamine.
More than 3,600 children remain sick in China from contaminated milk, with three in serious condition. The deaths of four infants have beenblamed on tainted dairy products.
