McLaren becomes first carbon-neutral F1 team

McLaren has become the first ever fully carbon-neutral team in Formula 1, with a wide range of efficiency-driven measures currently enforced at its Woking base.

The accolade, which backs up the coveted Carbon Trust Standard that the outfit achieved in December of last year, recognises the squad’s recent and impressive results, including the 1500 tonnes of CO2 emissions being annually saved.

"I’m both delighted and proud that Vodafone McLaren Mercedes has become the world’s first carbon-neutral Formula 1 team," Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh said on Monday. "It’s a considerable achievement: the result of a lot of hard work by a number of extremely dedicated individuals within our organisation, and a testament to our philosophy of continuous improvement within the workplace.

"Today’s announcement is the strongest possible proof that we’ve gone farther than any other Formula 1 team in becoming more environmentally sympathetic and efficient - an achievement that’s of great importance not only to our entire organisation but also to all our partners too."

Mercedes no longer has McLaren team stake

Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler no longer owns a share of the McLaren team, according to media reports.

McLaren, still powered by the marque’s Brixworth-built engines, began its association with Mercedes in 1995, culminating in world championships and the German carmaker owning 40 per cent of the Woking based team.

But when Mercedes took over Brawn in order to have its own works team ahead of the 2010 season, Daimler chairman Dieter Zetsche said the plan was for McLaren to buy back the stake.

“The McLaren Group will become a fully independent stand-alone corporate entity,” McLaren confirmed.

But until last year, Mercedes still owned a minor share in the team.

Media reports this week, however – including in the Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport – revealed that Mercedes was no longer a McLaren shareholder as of 1 January 2012 following a “phased withdrawal”.

But McLaren will continue to run Mercedes’ V8 engine free of charge this year, before the famous British team must pay in 2013.

“It remains to be seen if, with the introduction of the new 6 cylinder (engine rules), the Woking team will chose to stay with Mercedes in 2014,” said Tuttosport.

McLaren rejects new F1 engine contact with PURE

McLaren rejects latest speculation about F1 engine link-up with PURE. McLaren’s latest rumours about that it could choose to alter engine partners when F1 switches to V6-turbo power-units from 2014 season.

Last November McLaren clearly said the team fully focused on ensuring future success with Mercedes-Benz. McLaren has made it clear, however, that there were no discussions with Pure - and suggested that the option was not going to be pursued.

"McLaren has had absolutely no contact with PURE for many months,"  McLaren spokesman told Autosport. "Moreover, the contact we did have with PURE, many months ago, was of an entirely informal nature, and was merely a courtesy gesture."

The end last season, McLaren's MD Jonathan Neale had to dismiss reports that the outfit was trying to lure Honda back into F1.

"That is all wide of the mark," said Neale about the Honda speculation. "We are very happy with and enjoying our partnership with Mercedes-Benz. We are not quite sure where that story came from in truth. But I can stop the rumour and say that we are entirely focused on our Mercedes-Benz relationship. It is a long one spanning many wins and championships and long may it continue."
