2010 rule changes - accommodating larger fuel tanks

Asa result of the ban on refuelling, 2010 cars will almost certainly havelonger wheelbases as designers are forced to accommodate fuel tanksclose to double the size of their predecessors'. One of the biggestengineering challenges will be to minimise this increase in wheelbase -and to minimise the impact of any increase. Moving the cockpit forwardslightly and a shorter gearbox design are two possible options. A thirdcould see teams harking back to a concept not seen on the grid in overa decade. In 1998 Stewart's Alan Jenkins and Arrows' John Barnard movedthe oil tank from its then traditional position in the gearbox casing(left car, red arrow) to a new location immediately behind the cockpit(middle drawing, red arrow). This had the advantages of positioning thetank's weight near the car's centre of gravity, and reducing the car'soverall weight thanks to the need for shorter piping. And that's wherethe oil tank has stayed, until now. Under the new rules, rather thanhousing the oil tank behind the newly-expanded fuel tank (which wouldmean increasing the wheelbase), we could see it once more shiftedrearwards, where it can be housed with the gearbox without penalty.

hanya satu pandangan sahaja....., kadang2 boring gak rol FIA ni...... ekehekehekeh

Teams agree to ban double diffusers

Following what has been described by as 'a highly constructive and positive meeting of the Formula One Commission' on Monday, all teams have agreed to ban the use of double diffusers from the start of next season. A final verdict from F1 governing body the FIA is expected within the next 48 hours.

With significant regulation changes in Formula 1 requiring the mutual consent of the FIA as well as all teams, the entrants have agreed to put a stop to the use of the controversial downforce-generating devices from 2011 onwards - a row over the 'double-decker' components overshadowed the first two races of last year.

With a rear diffuser generating more aerodynamic downforce than any other part of a Formula 1 car, teams have made a pact to reduce the height of main section of the diffuser from 175 millimetres to 125 millimetres for next season, with the use of 'double' diffusers being barred completely.

The devices - which contain an extra 'hole' in order to generate more downforce in the upper part of the diffuser - remain for 2010, however, with many teams being able to design this year's cars around the component as opposed to hurriedly incorporating the part, as seen during the 2009 season.

The additional space at the top of the diffuser will not be permitted from the start of next season. The additional space at the top of the diffuser will not be permitted from the start of next season
