IRC: Hanninen leads Rallye Monte Carlo

Juho Hanninen concludes the opening day of the Monte with a 44.5 second advantage over fellow Skoda Fabia S2000 man Freddy Loix.

Juho Hanninen has taken the early lead on Rallye Monte Carlo following the opening day.

Hanninen grabbed P1 in the second test this morning, having been edged out by Stephane Sarrazin in SS1. However he was more than 30 seconds quicker than the Frenchman in the 41.06 km run through Burzet-St. Martial and the Finn thus went into the mid-day halt with a 35.6 second advantage.

This afternoon he continued to push, stretching his lead further in SS3, when he was again quickest. Second best in SS4 ensured he ended the day comfortably out front, 44.5 seconds up on fellow Skoda Fabia S2000 man Freddy Loix.

“We have a very good feeling with the car,” said the 2010 Intercontinental Rally Challenge champion after SS3. “We have a good set-up and made a good choice of tyres [for this afternoon].”

Petter Solberg meanwhile finished the day third on his 'guest' outing in a Peugeot 207 S2000. 'Hollywood' began cautiously and was sixth in SS1. However he upped the pace in SS2, SS3 and SS4, setting one second and two third fastest times. He now lies 10.8 seconds adrift of 'silver'.

Early leader Sarrazin is fourth, just 0.2 seconds off P3, while Britain's Guy Wilks completes the top five on his debut event with Peugeot UK.

Further down the order, Jan Kopecky is sixth, 7.6 seconds off Wilks, followed by Bryan Bouffier, Francois Delecour, Jean-Sebastien Vigion and Julien Maurin in positions 8 through to 10.

Former F1 driver Alex Caffi ended up 14th, one spot behind Toni Gardemeister, who had tyre problems in SS3 and lost over 3 minutes.

There were a number of retirements today, with M-Sport Stobart man Henning Solberg amongst the biggest scalps in his Fiesta S2000, along with Skoda UK's Andreas Mikkelsen and Proton Motorsport duo Chris Atkinson and Per-Gunnar Andersson.

The action now continues on Thursday with around 94 competitive kilometres on the bill - and two different stages, both repeated.

SS5, the 23.05 kiloemtre-run through St. Jean en Royans-Font d'Urle, begins at 12.23 hours local time.

ni baru dapat dari paul tan blog...
So it’s confirmed that Proton is out of this IRC season opener. Other series’ may have a rule that allows cars to compete on the following day if repairs can be done in time, but not IRC. Out for the day means out of the rally. It’s the worst possible start to the season for Proton, but as a team member says: “That’s rallying, anything can happen”. Being here with the team, I share the disappointment.

Disaster Robs PROTON Of Maiden Victory In S-WRC At The Monte Carlo Rally

A fire in the engine bay three special stages to the finish of the grueling five-day long Monte Carlo Rally ended a spectacular run for PROTON in the 2012 FIA Super World Rally Championship (S-WRC) and the hopes of clinching its maiden victory on its debut season in the World Rally Championship.

The fire was later traced to a fuel leak in the engine bay of the Satria Neo S2000, which forced PG Andersson into retirement in special stage 16, a 23.41km run through Moulinet-La Bollène Vésubie.

Day four of the Monte Carlo Rally consisted of four special stages which included a repeat of the morning session’s 23.41km Moulinet-La Bollène Vésubie special stage and the 18.81km Lantosque-Luceram test.

The PROTON driver had earlier completed a trouble-free drive through Moulinet-La Bollène Vésubie to tighten the grip on his lead in the S-WRC category, gaining another 8 seconds to extend his advantage to 1 minute 48 seconds over Skoda’s Kevin Abbring. Ford’s Craig Breen was a distant threat some 22 minutes behind while Frenchman Bryan Bouffier in the Peugeot 207 S2000 a further 4 minutes adrift in fourth place.

With three more special stages to go – the two repeat stages and the fifth and final day of rallying which would have been run on the 5.16km Ste Agnès-Col de la Madone stretch - Andersson was also the only S2000 car in the top 10 front runners, holding on to 9th position overall with Abbring, Breen and Bouffier placed 12th, 15th and 16th respectively.

The retirement ended what had been a spectacular drive by Andersson which saw PROTON leading the S-WRC class and outshining heavyweights Skoda, Ford and Peugeot.

“ There are elements that you control and there are those that you can never prepare for, and this was precisely what we experienced today. The team, especially Andersson, is extremely devastated by this stroke of misfortune considering we were essentially already en route to claiming victory, ” said Datuk Abdul Razak Dawood, the Head of PROTON Motorsports.

“Andersson took a cautious approach on the penultimate day of rallying and was even prepared to concede his ninth place overall as he did not want to be distracted from being focused on clinching victory in the S-WRC category. But this is the reality of rallying, and what makes the Monte Carlo Rally one of the toughest and most unpredictable rallies on the world championship.”

Datuk Abdul Razak and the entire team commended Andersson on an impeccable drive that saw the Satria Neo S2000 dominate the S-WRC category.

“ Despite the outcome, it was an exceptional drive and definitely an eye-opening start to the season. ”

Meanwhile, PROTON’s Director of Group Marketing, Branding and Motorsports John Chacko said the Satria Neo S2000’s performance in the Monte Carlo Rally had successfully given the brand and Malaysian manufacturer a valuable and tremendous boost in terms of recognition on the international arena.

“ While we are in competition to win, an equally important objective is to build the brand internationally and that was precisely what was achieved in Monte Carlo and around the world when you had unsuspecting rally fans taking notice of and even cheering on a manufacturer they knew little about, ” said Chacko.

“ Andersson’s charge in the Satria Neo S2000 had without a doubt, made an impactful introduction for PROTON on the World Rally Championship and comparing to where we were last season in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC), the rally programme has definitely taken a big step forward and this underlines the company’s commitment to becoming better. ”

Citroen’s Sebastien Loeb continued to assert dominance to stretch his lead at the front of the pack and currently holds a 2 minute 41.5 seconds advantage over second placeman Dani Sordo in the Mini. Sordo however, saw his lead of more than a minute over Ford’s Petter Solberg trimmed to a mere 19 seconds with two more special stages to contest.

Superb win for Proton

KARLSTAD: Per Gunnar Andersson (pic) delivered a crushing first win for Proton on their return to the World Rally Championship (WRC) in the Super class at the Rally Sweden yesterday.

Proton firmly put behind them the disappointment of the Monte Carlo season-opener when Andersson was forced into retirement while leading the rally's Super class.

There was no repeat this time as Andersson finished a commanding 3:35.8s ahead of Ireland's Craig Breen in a Ford Fiesta, steadily increasing the lead over yesterday's final six stages.

The Satria Neo S2000 of Andersson also finished 12th in the overall classification as the Swede replicated his home win in 2010.

It was also a remarkable achievement for Proton, who last enjoyed a win at the WRC in the Group N production car championship through Karamjit Singh in 2002.

Proton Motorsports head Datuk Abdul Razak Dawood was more pleased than relieved, after the misfortune last month, as the Satria Neo showed what the team is capable of achieving this season.

"We have come a long way to get to this stage and claim the win. It should have happened in Monte Carlo but we saw here the pace of the car was better than some of the World Rally cars.

"We might be a smaller team with a smaller budget but we were able to run them close. The car has proven to be reliable and fast," said Abdul Razak after the finish in Karlstad yesterday.

With the Satria Neo showing good pace, Andersson and co-driver Emil Axelsson took advantage to build his lead and gained two spots overall, earning Abdul Razak's praise.

"G (Andersson) was fantastic. He went faster today (yesterday) after the suspension problem was fixed. He drove a sensible race and he was close in Monte Carlo too.

"He saw that the car had pace in it and the opportunity was there to go for it and he took it," said Abdul Razak.

Finland's Jari-Matti Latvala claimed the overall win for Ford as he finished in 3:18:28.3s, 16.6 seconds ahead of second-placed Finn Mikko Hirvonen in a Citroen.

World champion Sebastien Loeb retained the championship lead by finishing sixth after multiple delays earlier in the weekend. By Devinder Sing
