Bushidō, meaning "Way of the Warrior", is a Japanese code of conduct and a way of the samurai life, loosely analogous to the concept of chivalry. It originates from the samurai moral code and stresses frugality, loyalty, martial arts mastery, and honour until death. Born of two main influences, the violent existence of the samurai was tempered by the wisdom and serenity of Confucianism and Buddhism. Bushidō developed between the 9th and 12th centuries and numerous translated documents dating from the 12th to 16th centuries demonstrate its wide influence across the whole of Japan.[1]
According to the Japanese dictionary Shogakukan Kokugo Daijiten, "Bushidō is defined as a unique philosophy (ronri) that spread through the warrior class from the Muromachi (chusei) period." In Bushidō: The Soul of Japan (1899), author Nitobe Inazō wrote: "...Bushidō, then, is the code of moral principles which the samurai were required or instructed to observe... More frequently it is a code unuttered and unwritten... It was an organic growth of decades and centuries of military career."

Zen Buddhism is said to have come to Japan by way of Chan, a form of Mahāyāna Buddhism (see Mahāyāna Buddhism) brought to China from India by Bodhidharma (see Bodhidharma), the twenty-eighth successor to Gautama Buddha (see Gautama Buddha), the Buddha Sākyamuni, in the fifth century CE. Chan was a version of what in India was called dhyāna, a meditative and ecstatic form of Buddhism. Influenced also by Daoism (see Daoism) when it came to China and various esoteric forms of Buddhism (see Japanese Buddhism) when it came to Japan, it eventually flourished in the Rinzai and Sōtō sects. The monk Dogen is said to have been responsible in the thirteenth century for the rise of Sōtō Zen. The monk Hakuin was the leader of a major Rinzai form of Zen in the eighteenth century. Chan and Zen emphasize the possibility for the individual to discover through concentration and meditation the Buddha nature underlying all things, including the self. Zen literally means recognizing the truth that is already there. For the Zen Buddhist, the wisdom to be gained from meditation or from a master who has achieved enlightenment is more important than anything that can be gained from ritual or scripture.
