Full Name : | Abdul Rashid Salleh | Place of birth : | Kuching, Sarawak | Race : | Melanau | Language : | English, Malay | | | | | Career : | Actor, tv presenter (espn)
| Skill : | Acting |
Actor:
---------------
Rashid Salleh is best known in Malaysia as anactor where he dedicated 18 years in the local Theatre (a place to honeone’s skill), Television (where the money is to be made) and Film (whenyou can see a much LARGER version of yourself… it’s really quitedaunting actually).
He was part of a successful cast of a localsitcom cast that received recognition at the 1998 Asian TelevisionAwards for “Best Comedy Programme”. He has, himself, been nominated atseveral local television awards and was last nominated as Best actor ina supporting role (as a transvestite) at the 2007 Malaysian FilmFestival Award after he joined ESS!
Rashid has been in involvedin sports for most of his life, mainly rugby. He started his rugbyeducation in the Malvern Hills in Worcestershire and the proudestmoment was being the 2nd Malaysian representing Oxfordshire Under 19sRugby Team (the first was his older brother!). He has also representedCOBRA, a local rugby team in Malaysia for umpteen years and due to workcommitments with ESPN STAR Sports, can only view the sports from a safedistance. He has dabbled in football, cricket, hockey, tennis, swimming, wakeboarding and face-planting as part of his sportingeducation.
Hailing from Sarawak, East Malaysia, this fullblooded melanau is proud of his heritage and comes from a rather largefamily of ten children. His parents never discouraged him or hissiblings from sports and were lucky to get a sound education as well!
Thisis his second stint in broadcasting, the first being a LIVE morningtalk show host for a local TV station. He is thoroughly enjoying theexperience as presenter and reporter on SportsCenter and and has evenmade a niche for himself creating ‘Little Known Facts’ for the show ashe travels around when reporting in the field.
And he hopes to be creating more than that with the large ESS family.
-------------------------
Question & Answer with Rashid Salleh
Q: How did you come to be in your current position in your broadcasting career?
RS:Was recommended by good friends Paula Malai Ali and Andrew Leci andwent through the interview process and somehow managed to slip past thedragnet.
Q: Is reporting on sport the next best thing to playing it? And what was the pinnacle you reached in your favourite sport?
RSefinitely. As a former rugby player (I stress former as due to work, injury is a no-no) it is the obvious alternative to playing. Favouritemoment was meeting Jonah Lomu at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in KualaLumpur. The All Blacks won the gold that year too!
Q: What is your favourite sport outside of the one you are best known for? And how do you relax when you are not working?
RS: Football, football and football. How do I relax? I’m a walking workaholic so relaxing is not an option.
Q: Who was the biggest influence on your life, either within your career or outside?
RS:The biggest influence on my life are definitely my parents, family andclose friends. I wouldn’t be where I am now without them. Truth be said.
Q: Who is the most memorable individual you have met during your playing or working life?
RS:My rugby coach in school who had belief in my playing abilities andinspired me to play well despite being smaller and shorter thaneveryone. He had a motto’ “The bigger they are, the harder they fall”
Q: Tell us the funniest story you have heard regarding your chosen, or any, sport.
RS: Being hit in the crown jewels whilst wicket-keeping in a school cricket match. I wasn’t wearing a ball protector…
Q: Do you/did you have a nickname?
RS: ‘Rash’ outside and ‘Rat’ by my close friends. There’s a reason for that; you’ll have to get to know my mates to find out…
Q: Tell us something we may not know about you.
RS: I am only one of TEN children in my family. Ten-a-side rugby anyone?
