Charts: "K-On!!" dominates single sales
Wed, May 5, 2010 (8:00am EDT)

Last year, the popular anime series "K-On!" achieved the first #1 album by anime characters, and this week, it achieved the first #1 single. "GO! GO! MANIAC," the opening theme from the show's currently-airing second season (titled "K-On!!"), sold more than 83,000 copies to claim the top spot.

In addition, the show's ending theme "Listen!!" sold 77,000 copies to rank #2 for the week. Before this, the only female singers to achieve the top two singles in the same week were Keiko Fuji in 1970 and Seiko Matsuda in 1983.

°C-ute's new song charted at #5. Hilcrhyme (#6), Yukari Tamura (#7), and Shoko Nakagawa (#9) also entered the top ten.

On the albums chart, Hideaki Tokunaga's "VOCALIST 4" remained at #1 for the second week in a row. The only new release to break the top ten was from SURFACE, which barely made the list.

Chiemi Hori creates world's biggest 'onigiri'

Friday 07th May, 03:48 AM JST

TOKYO —

Former idol singer Chiemi Hori, 43, has created the world’s largest “onigiri.” Onigiri, commonly translated as rice ball or rice cake in English, is a popular snack food in Japan. The mildly seasoned, hand-molded ball may contain a variety of fillings, and is a fixture in convenience stores.

Hori made the giant onigiri by combining 5,555 individual rice balls into a single creation, beating the previous record of 5,040. The new record-holding onigiri is approximately 27 by 2 square meters in size and has been record in the Guinness World Records.

“This is the first time I’ve tried for a world record of any kind,” Hori said. “It was very exciting.”

Her contribution was part of Food Action Nippon, a movement sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. In the campaign, the ministry asks various companies to promote increased consumption of agricultural produce harvested in regional areas of Japan.

Another Blow for Waka

May 07, 2010

The group of companies established by former sumo yokozuna Hanada Masaru (39, photo left) has filed for bankruptcy. Three companies, including the Dream Ark firm that ran the Chanko Dining Waka chain restaurants, filed at the Tokyo District Court yesterday. The group has outstanding debts in the region of ¥450 million.

Hanada set up the company in 2002 and opened the first Waka restaurant in the central Tokyo district of Roppongi in March 2003. The restaurant specialized in the chanko food that helps sumo wrestlers stay so bulky. With expansion into such foods as yakiniku and udon, the chain grew to 29 restaurants. Hanada ran the company until 2008, after which he only acted as an advisor. In 2009, six former franchisees sued Dream Ark for unpaid overtime. According to the company's website, the chain currently has 14 restaurants across Japan and one in Seoul, South Korea. Most of those franchises are expected to remain in business for the time being.

Though not directly connected with the bankruptcy, it is yet another blow to Hanada. After injuries forced the popular champion - who used his father's ring name of Wakanohana - to retire as relatively early from sumo in 2000, he made an unsuccessful attempt to get into the NFL, playing briefly in the local X League. He then switched to TV, appearing as a sportscaster and talento on the variety show circuit. While initially successful as a businessman, his personal life was a mess. 2005 saw a very public rift with his younger brother Takanohana and the death of their father. In 2007, he divorced his wife Mieko after a 5-year separation. The couple have four children.

Japanese Trekkie community expanding at warp speed

By Jamie Lano

TOKYO —

“Choju to hanei wo.” Or, as some of us are more used to hearing, “Live long and prosper.” Those iconic words, first spoken by Mr Spock in the original “Star Trek” television series some 40 years ago, helped usher in a new era of science fiction television across the world. And Japan was no exception.

While the world of Japanese “Star Trek” fandom is not as readily visible as, say, goth loli or the cult of Pikachu, Trekkies are lurking around nearly every corner. In particular, the series (known in Japan as “Uchu Daisakusen”) has had a strong influence on men now in their 30s and 40s.

“Nearly everyone watched it at least once growing up,” says Tenjin Hidetaka, 36, a mechanical designer for the popular Macross Frontier anime series. “Fans told me about ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation,’ which at the time was being serialized…. From the moment I tuned in, I was hooked. It was the first time that I became completely involved in a television show.”

“Star Trek” debuted on Japanese TV in the ’70s, and the first unofficial fanclub, Starfleet Kyoto, formed soon after. A few years later, the fan base grew when the Japanese edition of popular sci-fi magazine Starlog began publishing special issues with interviews and behind-the-scenes photos. In 1980, an 8-bit text-based simulation game based on the series became the country’s top-selling title shortly after its debut. More new fans were beamed aboard in 1992, when “The Next Generation” began its long-running serialization, and then again when small publisher Japan Mix released a series of “Star Trek”-related fiction and guidebooks a few years later.

The series has proved enormously influential in pop culture as well. Leading game show “America Oudan Ultra Quiz,” which ran on Nippon TV from 1977 to 1992, used a version of the original “Star Trek” music as its opening theme, and the 2005 film “Summer Time Machine Blues” featured a character who dressed up as Commander Riker from “The Next Generation.” Perhaps the best-known tribute came from superstar band M-Flo, who rewrote the original “Star Trek” theme to coincide with the series’ 40th anniversary. Titled “Love Long and Prosper,” the track is available on the album electriCOLOR.

Although “Star Trek” fever broke with the cancellation of spin-off series like “Voyager” and “Deep Space Nine,” interest is heating up again thanks to last year’s big-screen release. At the December edition of Comiket, the bi-annual “dojinshi” event that draws tens of thousands of people to Tokyo Big Sight, visitors could find almost any type of fan-generated material imaginable. The series’ appeal to Japanese anime and manga devotees is obvious — the episodes are by turns humorous, adventuresome and romantic.

In the pre-internet days, small-scale “Star Trek” clubs like Uchu Ringo, which hosted gatherings and parties for fellow fans, were the norm. Nowadays, most fans have moved to Mixi as a central rallying point, with the largest Trekkie community boasting nearly 7,000 members. The Japanese version of Memory Alpha, the “Star Trek” wiki, hosts nearly 2,000 articles.

All of this activity has boldly led to where no Japanese has gone before: an official Japan-based “Star Trek” fan club, which debuted in February. Featuring members-only events and original merchandise, Starfleet Far East is the culmination of 40 years of fandom. For Japan’s cell phone legions, there’s also a mobile site where, for a monthly fee of 350 yen, users can access ringtones, sound effects, animated screensavers and the latest “Star Trek” news.

Comedy starring Japanese porn star premieres in Indonesia

Friday 07th May, 03:48 PM JST

JAKARTA —

An Indonesian comedy film starring Japanese porn actress Maria Ozawa premiered in a number of cities in Indonesia this week despite opposition from some religious groups in the world’s most-populated Muslim country.

“Menculik Miyabi” (Kidnapping Miyabi), classified as a teenage comedy film by Indonesia’s Film Censorship Agency, has stirred controversy among Islamic figures and moviegoers over the producer’s choice of 24-year-old Ozawa, known to her many fans as Miyabi, to be the star.

Amidhan, deputy chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Council or MUI, the country’s top Muslim clerical body, said the council ‘‘firmly rejects the release of ‘Menculik Miyabi.’‘’

‘‘The movie will serve as a door for teenagers seeking porn DVDs starring Miyabi. Besides that, they’ll idolize her,’’ he said.

The militant group Islamic Defense Front or FPI has threatened to raid theaters showing the film if it finds it to contain any indecent elements.

Last year, about 100 members of the group held a protest in front of the movie producer Jakarta-based Maxima Pictures, to oppose Ozawa’s then-planned visit to Jakarta, which was later canceled over the commotion it was causing.

A group of six teenagers milling in the lobby of the Metropole theater in Central Jakarta, one of over 25 in the greater Jakarta area showing the film, was divided over whether to see it or not.

‘‘I am curious to see the film after all the controversy surrounding it since last year,’’ said 19-year-old Reza Januar.

But his friend Deni Marhandan, also 19, said he has no desire to watch a movie starring an adult film actress even if it is just a teenage comedy and not even remotely a porn flick.

‘‘It’s because I don’t want to be a supporter of a porn actress,’’ Marhandan said.

Among dozens of people exiting from a theater after watching “Menculik Miyabi” was Putri Melatina, a 17-year-old girl wearing an Islamic veil.

She said that she laughed a lot during the movie and would urge her friends to see it.

‘‘I don’t agree that the film will make teenagers idolize Miyabi and will drive them to seek for her porn DVDs. Even without this movie, those who love porn movies will seek her porn DVDs anyway by themselves,’’ she said.

Mulya of Maxima Pictures challenged anybody who opposes the movie to show him any part of it that could be considered vulgar or erotic. He claimed that Indonesia’s censorship body did not cut a single scene.

The movie was previously planned to be produced in Jakarta in October last year for release in January this year.

But after the controversy halted plans to film Ozawa in Jakarta, producers were forced by circumstances to revise the film’s plot and to film all scenes featuring her in Tokyo instead.

The revision sees Miyabi, who originally was to be kidnapped by her teenage fans at a Jakarta airport, replaced by a similarly named Taiwanese actress named Mie Yao Bie, who happens to appear at the airport at the supposed arrival time of Miyabi. Miyabi fails to arrive at the planned time due to the loss of her passport in Tokyo.

Mulya said that 70% of the film was shot in Jakarta while the rest was in Tokyo, making the film production cost quite high by Indonesian standards.

Born in Hokkaido to a Japanese mother and French-Canadian father, Ozawa has appeared in dozens of adult videos since beginning her porn career in 2005, which have made her popular not only in Japan but also overseas.

Besides adult videos, she appeared in 2007 in the popular Japanese TV drama ‘‘Mission Section Chief Hitoshi Tadano’’ and in 2008 in a Taiwanese horror movie called ‘‘Invitation Only,’’ in which she played a supermodel. She has also appeared in music videos.

Her pirated porn DVDs have been the bestsellers for years in Jakarta’s pirated DVD market of Glodok.

Ebi-chan, Ilmari announce secret marriage

Monday 10th May, 08:00 AM JST

TOKYO —

It was announced Sunday that popular model Yuri Ebihara, 30, has entered the family registry of Rip Slyme member and beau Ilmari, 34, and the two have plans to hold a ceremony in a Paris church on June 16 in front of 50 friends and relatives.

In a handwritten message sent by her agency, Ebi-chan said, “We’re looking forward to creating a supportive and cheerful household together.”

Ebihara and Ilmari, whose real name is Keisuke Ogihara, had been seeing each other for a year before tying the knot in secrecy. Sources say the pair submitted their marriage registration earlier this year at a ward office in Tokyo and soon after began living together in a condo.

Ebihara said she is not pregnant, but added she had made an agreement with her younger sister, who has been married for four years, to give birth at around the same time. She said she wants to remain a model for the rest of her life and will not quit the celeb social scene.

Romance Built to Last?

May 10, 2010

Everyone was taken by surprise at the weekend when rock vocalist Tamaki Koji (51) and talento Aota Noriko (42) both officially announced their relationship online. But no one was more angry about it than Tamaki's former girlfriend, actress Ishihara Mari (46). That eventful relationship goes way back, as far as 1983, though 23 years and several marriages came and went before they were reunited in February 2009 (see below - she later changed her name to Mari). They tried to tie the knot at the time but it turned out that Ishihara's divorce from her American husband had not been finalized. Then it was reported back in September that they had split up, but Ishihara says they were still trying to work things out. On her blog yesterday she said she was "stunned" by Tamaki's announcement. "If a person refuses to face up to a problem they caused, and then tries to pass the buck, well that's just perverse."

Anzen Chitai singer Tamaki has been divorced three times, while former C.C. Girls member Aota has one marriage under her bodicon belt. She has been a fan since her youth, when she was a sex symbol of Japan's late 1980's bubble years, and the pair have known each other for some 20 years. Romance is said to have blossomed at the beginning of this year, though sources say they are not yet considering marriage. Tamaki and his band are currently preparing for a nationwide concert tour from July but the media will no doubt be more focused on his love life.
