North Korea develops radar-absorbing paint

By Jung Sung-ki

North Korea is believed to have developed a radar absorbing paint to conceal its fighter jets, warships and tanks from surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft flown by South Korea and the United States, a report said Monday.

According to the daily Chosun Ilbo, which obtained a classified North Korea field manual published in 2005, North Korea’s military has also built numerous fake foxholes and caves near the Demilitarized Zone to evade precision strikes.

The field manual was smuggled out of the North by a source through Caleb Mission, a South Korean Christian organization in South Chungcheong Province.

The 80-page handbook gives detailed instructions on how to make and apply stealth paint, which absorbs radar waves, the newspaper said.

It also describes how to disguise facilities or equipment and how to make military units look as though they are moving when they are not, it said.

In addition, the handbook describes the covering up of long-range artillery by applying radar-reflective materials.

The North’s military was also ordered to pave fake runways and build fake caves to deceive South Korean and U.S. reconnaissance satellites and aircraft.

Under a military modernization program, South Korea has sought to boost its intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capability to monitor key facilities in the North.

The South Korean military also focuses on striking North Korean facilities and artillery units hidden in mountain caves and tunnels near the border should war break out.

To that end, the South Korean Air Force is equipping its KF-16 fighter aircraft with precision-guided Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM).

The test-firing of a JDAM from a KF-16 will be conducted by the year’s end.

The JDAM GBU-31 is a U.S. high-tech guidance tail kit that converts existing unguided free-fall bombs into accurate, all-weather ``smart'' munitions. Guidance is facilitated through a tail control and global positioning system (GPS) aided internal navigation.

The 40,000-dollar-bomb has a glide-range upon release of 24 kilometers and provides a weapon circular error probability of 13 meters. It can penetrate up to 2.4 meters of concrete.

Not true, belligerent nations like NK and Iran should not have nukes.

Mark my words, Iran will wipe out Saudi Arabia with their nukes one day. Watch for it.

im suggesting nuclear weapons for every nation in the world... like India n Pakistan, one would think twice of invading thier neghbouring country.. even if Saudi Arabia arm itself with nuclear weapon than Iran will think twice to do anything foolish...

why should we allow US and some other countries to own nuclear weapons?

Any country with nukes will be unlikely to give them up so don't expect China, US, Russia, NK or India to give up. It would be foolish to attack NK because they already have nukes. The rest of the world can only wait for NK to collapse like berlin wall.

In the case of Iran, the theocratic leadership has this end time apocalyptic view and that makes it very dangerous. They are clearly antagonistic and mischievous towards their neighbours. They think Shia is the true Islam and will dominate Islam in the end times and lead all Muslims to destroy Israel. They want to take over all oil resources in the middle east with the help of the Shias in the gulf states. Once they control all the middle east oil and Mecca, they will dominate the Muslim world.  The recent Wikileaks showed that all of Iran's Arab neighbours are actually goading US for a pre-emptive strike.

I predict that Iran will get nukes sooner or later and wipe out Saudi Arabia.

Korea Utara tambah bala tentera, kereta kebal

2010/12/30

- AFP

Jong-un whips up artillery units on front line

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un made visits to two frontline artillery units and renewed threats of war, while Seoul called the move psychological warfare meant to agitate the South.

Kim inspected Monday the Wolnae Islet Defense Detachment and another long-range artillery unit under the North Korean People’s Army’s 641 unit and said their target was South Korean naval forces on Baengnyeong Island near the western maritime border, the North Korean media reported yesterday.

Wolnae Islet is just 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) away from Baengnyeong, the South’s northernmost island.

“ The reason for my visit is to finalize the order of attacks and the focus of firepower ,” Kim was quoted as saying by the Rodong Sinmun. “When I give an order, you should fire the first gunshots in the grand war to unify our homeland.”

His remarks suggested that the South’s five northern islands in the western waters will likely be targets of attack. The area near the western maritime border has been the scene of a series of inter-Korean battles over the past years including the North’s shelling of Yeonpyeong Island in November 2010.

According to the Rodong Sinmin, Kim told the soldiers to throw all enemies into a burning cauldron as soon as he gives the order.

“ Kim confidently said the North can turn Baengnyeong Island into a sea of fire, ” the report said. It added the commanders of the Wolnae unit promised to make the South Korean island a grave by reducing it to a sea of fire as they had done with Yeonpyeong.

The renewed threats came after South Korean and U.S. forces launched two joint military drills. While Seoul and Washington call the exercises a move to deter the North’s aggression, Pyongyang has denounced it a rehearsal for invasion.

Over the past month, North Korea’s young leader has alternated between bellicose threats and military themed trips to outings to enjoy sports events.

After its nuclear test on Feb. 12, the North issued a threat to reduce Washington into a sea of fire and wage all-out war against the South. Kim then hosted former NBA basketball player Dennis Rodman in Pyongyang, and the two watched a game together on Feb. 28.

On Thursday, Kim visited frontline troops on Mu and Jangjae islets and ordered them to be prepared to destroy enemy targets at a moment’s notice. The unit on Mu islet was responsible for the Yeonpyeong Island shelling.

Two days later, the North’s media reported that Kim inspected an indoor basketball court and ordered improvements for the athletes. He also attended an archery game, according to the state media reported.

This week, Kim repeated the pattern. He inspected western frontline troops Monday and renewed the line of “ sea of fire ” threat, according to the North’s media. He also toured the Ryongjong Fish Farm. The report said Kim could not forget his visit to the fish farm accompanying his father, North Korean leader Kim Jong-il two days before the Yeonpyeong Island shelling in 2010.

Seoul said yesterday Kim was engaging in psychological warfare to pressure the South, but no immediate sign of an attack was observed.

“ The North’s state media are repeatedly issuing war threats and escalated rhetoric to put psychological pressure on the South, ” Kim Min-seok, spokesman of the South’s National Defense Ministry, said.

The North is also creating a mood of war domestically by telling people to move to underground shelters, prepare combat rations and install camouflage covers, Kim said.

“ With a series of political and military activities, the North seeks to unite its people internally, ” Kim said, “ while threatening the South and the U.S. to shift their North policies. We hope the South Korean people won’t be agitated by the North’s psychological warfare. ”

Kim also said no immediate sign of a long-range missile launch or another nuclear test was observed, but the North appeared to be preparing for a massive military drill on the east coast near Wonsan.

A photo that makes North Korea look a lot less scary

Kim Jong Un inspects “ new ” military technology made by unit 1501 of the Korean People’s Army. (REUTERS/KCNA)

North Korea loves to threaten to start World War III. In the last week alone, it has warned Japan that it might launch a preemptive nuclear strike against it and released a video detailing its plan for a three-day invasion of South Korea.

The threats – turning Seoul into a sea of flames, eradicating the American military presence and maybe America itself – are empty, of course. And not just because North Korea doesn’t actually have any incentive to start a second Korean War (it has every incentive to make empty threats). They’re also empty because the North Korean military is just not that powerful anymore.

The photo at the top of this page helps to make my point, but first a bit of background.

It is true that the North Korean military is very big, one of the world’s largest standing armies : 1.1 million troops! 4,200 tanks! 820 fighter jets! It’s also, by virtue of Pyongyang’s “ military first ” policies, perhaps the most privileged and best funded arm of the state, maybe outside of Kim Jong Un’s personal piggy banks.

Even the military’s size and political backing, though, can’t make up for North Korea’s isolation and impoverishment. Most of those fighter jets, for example, will never take off because the regime can’t afford enough fuel to fill them up. Even if they could somehow procure enough jet fuel, the fighters “ would have been shot out of the sky in the first few hours of a conflict, ” Dartmouth professor and North Korea-watcher Jennifer Lind told NPR recently. The tanks, likewise, are old and inferior.

North Korean propaganda frequently tries to make the case that, not only is their national army fearless and enormous, but it’s also breathtakingly advanced. This propaganda is for domestic consumption, of course, but seeing it from the outside is a nice reminder of the wide technological gap between North Korea and its neighbors South Korea and Japan, not to mention the United States.

Take the above photo, just released by North Korean state media from leader Kim Jong Un’s big trip to visit Unit 1501 of the Korean People’s Army, which is reportedly developing new and exciting military technology.

Now, it’s possible that this computer – encased in a giant metal box, looking very retro – does something amazing. But note some of the environmental details: the dining room chair, the consumer desktop keyboard and Logitech mouse. None of those really scream “ advanced military computing technology ” so much as they suggest “ we should put an old Dell in this metal box to show to Dear Leader. ”

If you’ve been spending a lot of time reading about North Korea’s recent flurry of threats and provocations, apparently edging right up to the line of starting a war, perhaps it will ease your mind a bit to glimpse the technology and leadership behind its million-man army.

The Wall Street Journal’s Tom Gara tweeted, “ North Korea appears to have crossed a dangerous threshold and developed a fully-functioning calculator. ”

The ever-obsessive blog North Korea Leadership Watch of course has notes on the trip.  Apparently, this military unit also manufactures playground equipment, such as plastic slides.

They also allegedly made this bit of equipment, in the photo below, which looks like it might be some sort of range-finder or infrared sensor, perhaps of the kind meant to use with guided munitions. It’s difficult to tell what it’s resting on top of : a vehicle of some kind ? The hatch suggests it’s maybe an armored personnel carrier, although that armor looks awfully thin. It could also possibly be a submarine, given that other photos appear to show a long series of top-side hatches that might be launch tubes.

(REUTERS/KCNA)

Of course, the point of this photo is less about the maybe-infrared viewfinder and more about having Kim Jong Un leaning jauntily against it, alongside some poor general who looks like he doesn’t really understand what pose he’s supposed to take. But that’s North Korea for you: irreverence in the service of militarism, itself in the service of dictatorship.

So, dlm apa keadaan sekali pun, dr atas kertas hingga ke dunia nyata, SK much more better dr NK.

Tapi...dengan pembangunan yg berkembang pesat, ekonomi yg stabil dan kukuh, kemampuan kewangan yg melimpah ruah..tidak memungkinkan SK utk simply annouce war dgn NK although NK kerap 'menggertak' mereka, dan adakala dh diconsider hostile act sangat dah..

SK yg sangat maju, pesat membangun (my personal opinion) dah capai macam2 kejayaan utk tamadun mereka, for sure dengan declaration of war akan membuatkan mereka kehilangan semua tu, dgn harga yg amat tinggi..ekonomi, pembangunan, kekuatan sumber manusia dll bukan boleh dibangun dlm sehari dua, its take time..dan peperangan pada sebilangan tempoh masa, akan membuatkan SK lost all of it..semakin banyak yg kita cari dan dapat, semakin kita takut utk kehilangan semua itu..

Compare dgn NK, mereka lebih dare to fight, sebab mereka wont lost as much as SK...sebab tu they dare, they will and they brave enough..sebab mereka tak takut kehilangan apa2.

Untuk peperangan diantara dua nations yg boundriesnya tak sejauh mana, for sure any war with big scale will do a lot of damages.. Last edited by haji_one on 26-3-2013 02:38 PM
