Petronas FP1
The Petronas FP1 is a 899.5 cc (54.89 cu in) liquid-cooled inline three-cylinder homologation special sport bike that was produced in 2003 by Petronas.
Originally developed jointly by Petronas and Sauber Petronas Engineering AG as the Petronas GP1 989cc prototype to compete in MotoGP, Petronas decided to race the motorcycle in the Superbike World Championship instead. To meet the requirements for the motorcycle's entry into the championship, the engine was reduced to 899.5 cc (54.89 cu in) and Petronas had to produce 150 road version motorcycles for FIM homologation, thus making it the first Malaysian-built Superbike.
The first 75 units of Petronas FP1s were built in the United Kingdom by January 30 2003, passing homologation inspection to enable the bike to contest in 2003. The final 75 units were assembled in Malaysia by the country's motorcycle manufacturer, Modenas by July 2003.
Out of the 150 units produced only 100 were made available to the public available in Panache Green, Exotic Black and Misty Grey. The other 50 units were kept to be used for racing.
Petronas joined forces with four-time Superbike World champion Carl Fogarty to form a racing team - Foggy Petronas Racing - to participate in the Superbike World Championship.
From 2003 the FIM changed the rules to allow 1000 cc machines (either twins, triples or four-cylinder) to race. The FP1 was developed under the previous regulations (that limited the engine displacement for 3 cylinder to 900cc), as a result the motorcycle was at a disadvantage from the rest of the field.
With the Japanese manufacturers limiting their involvement for 2003 and 2004, the FP1 was able to have some good results, finishing on the podium twice in 2004. With Japanese motorcycles returning in 2005 the FP1 fell behind and by 2006 it was struggling to finish in the points. Petronas terminated the superbike project at the end of 2006 |

Superbike World Championship
Superbike World Championship (also known as SBK) is the worldwide Superbike racing Championship. The championship was founded in 1988. The Superbike World Championship season consists of a series of rounds held on permanent racing facilities. Each round has 2 races and the results of each race are combined to determine two annual World Championships, one for riders and one for manufacturers.
The motorcycles raced in the championship are tuned versions of motorcycles available for sale to the public, by contrast with MotoGP (MotoGP is the motorcycle world's equivalence of Formula 1 racing whereas the SBK is similar to Touring Car racing) where purpose built machines are used.
Europe is Superbike World Championship's traditional centre and leading market.[1] However, rounds are also held in Qatar, Australia, South Africa, and the United States (in 2008, for the first time since 2004).[2] An Indonesian race was also proposed for the 2008 season, but this was later canceled by the FIM.[3]
The championship is regulated by the FIM the governing body of motorcycle racing and managed and promoted by FGSport.
History
The Superbike World Championship began in 1988, being open to modified versions of road bike models available to the public. For many years, the formula allowed for machines with 1000 cc V-twin engines (principally Ducati, but later Aprilia and Honda) to go up against the 750 cc four-cylinder engines (Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki). For the first few seasons Honda won with the RC30, but gradually the twins got the upper hand. Using 1000 cc V-twin engines benefited Ducati and it was able to dominate the championship for many years. From 1993 to 1999 Carl Fogarty and Ducati dominated, Fogarty won the title a record 4 times and finished as runner-up twice on factory Ducatis. Troy Corser also won the 1996 title and finished as runner-up in 1995, both times on a Ducati.
Carl Fogarty has won the Superbike World Championship a record 4 times with Ducati
Realizing that 1000 cc V-twin engines suited the superbike racing formula more, Honda introduced its own V-Twin powered motorcycle the VTR1000/RC51 in 2000. The result was clear right away as Colin Edwards won the championship in the bike's first year of competition. Ducati regained the title in 2001 with Troy Bayliss. |
