FACILITIES
Aeronautics Laboratory
The Aeronautics Lab is equipped with a Low Speed Wind Tunnel, the only one of its kind in the country. It was commissioned in 2001 to serve a three-pronged mission:
* Education and Training
* Advanced Research in Aerodynamics
* Testing and Consultancy Services
The wind tunnel has the max speed of 80 m/s at atmospheric pressure with interchangeable test section of 2 m (W) x 1.5 m (H) x 5.8 m (L). The Aeronautics lab is a registered member of the worldwide SATA since 2002. The lab has been actively involved with various testing and R&D services including:
* Waja and Savvy models for Proton
* New motorcycle models for Modenas
* Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for SCS Sdn Bhd
* House roof models for Dian Creative
* Aeroelastic studies on Putrajaya monorail bridge
* Windbreaker vegetation on Plus Highways
* Wind effects on high rise buildings
* Microlight aircraft models
* UTM solar car model
* AQSTOL Aircraf

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 — The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is offering its expertise through the IIUM wind tunnel testing facility to all car manufacturing companies to test any new car designed and developed by them.
IIUM Deputy Rector for Research and Innovation Prof Dr Ahmad Faris Ismail said aerodynamic stability, engine cooling or ventilation effectiveness and many other related aspects were examples of car qualities that could be measured and optimised in the IIUM wind tunnel and associated laboratories such as the engine test bed.
The university was keen and willing to deal with those companies which were interested in the project, he said in a statement here Wednesday.
The RM10-million wind tunnel project, launched in 2002 and completed recently, would enhance the contribution of the university in the field of science, technology and research, he added.
Based on the widely acceptable worldwide wind tunnel standards, the IIUM wind tunnel is currently one of the largest wind tunnels in Malaysia, with excellent flow quality and instrumentation.
Dr Ahmad Faris said that nowadays it was common practice in industrialised countries to always include wind tunnel testing before a new project of high-rise buildings, long span bridges, airports and towers. |
