Lotus fires up 2010 car, set for Tuesday shakedown

The Cosworth engine in the rear of the first completed 2010 Lotus car has been fired up.

The new Malaysian-backed, Norfolk (UK)-based team announced recently that the single seater will be launched at London's Royal Horticultural Hall this coming Friday.

It was thought that Lotus would run the car for the first time in the hands of Jarno Trulli at Silverstone on the day after the launch, before joining the third group test at Jerez later in February.

But it has now emerged that the car was in fact fired up at the Hingham factory on Saturday, and is scheduled to be shaken down on Tuesday.

A BBC report said the engine fire-up followed "some minor technical delays".

"We'll be shaking the car down on Tuesday, just getting this fire up is one thing, there's still a lot of parts to go on there," technical director Mike Gascoyne told BBC Radio Norfolk.

The Malaysian newspaper The Star revealed that the shakedown will take place at Silverstone.

Following Virgin's two-day Silverstone shakedown late last week, Lotus will be the second of the four new F1 teams to have a car up and running.

"Well done Mike Gascoyne," said team boss Tony Fernandes. "Sure Colin Chapman would have been proud."

It is also believed that Force India's new VJM03, which ran for the first time at Silverstone last Wednesday, has passed all of the mandatory crash tests.

Lotus Cosworth roars into life!

For the first time in twenty seven years a Lotus Cosworth engine has been successfully fired up just days ahead of the new team’s initial shakedown.

The V8 powerplant roared to life at the team’s Norfolk factory and despite a few technical delays, technical director Mike Gascoyne was very pleased.

"We'll be shaking the car down on Tuesday, just getting this fire-up is one thing, there's still a lot of parts to go on there," he told the BBC. “We're on the home run now, and that's the first Lotus Cosworth that's fired up for 27 years, so that's a big milestone.”

Lotus will take to the track for the first time on Tuesday ahead of their official launch at the end of the week.

Lotus insists F1 team on track

Another new team has moved to reject speculation that a lack of funding could thwart its Formula One foray.

Rumours questioning the health
of the USF1 and Campos entrants have been widespread, but especially within Malaysia, the new Lotus team is also subject to those who wonder if it has the money to compete throughout 2010.

UK based Lotus, owned and financed by a consortium of Malaysian entrepreneurs, was hoping to secure the sponsorship of the oil company Petronas, who instead elected to back Mercedes GP.

Despite the links with the carmaker Proton and the Sepang circuit, the Malaysian government has clarified that it is not funding Lotus, and the sports car marque Lotus Cars has also distanced itself from the F1 team.

The 2010 livery is not likely to feature the sponsorship logos of third party backers, but the car is due to be debuted at Silverstone on Tuesday, before it joins the third group test at Jerez next week.

Responding to the negative speculation about Lotus, chief executive Riad Asmat said: "I think we're due a little bit more credit.

"So far, of the new teams, only Virgin and us have our cars ready and we will be on the grid in Bahrain," he told the New Straits Times.

The 2010 Lotus car will be launched publicly in London on Friday. :@

The first Lotus Formula 1 car for 15 years hit the race track on Tuesday as Fairuz Fauzy completed a secret shakedown for the team's 2010 challenger at Silverstone.

As AUTOSPORT's exclusive spy shot of the new car shows, the so-far unnamed machine was running in the historic green and yellow colours that were so synonymous with Lotus in the 1950s and 1960s.

It is not clear, however, whether the team will keep these colours for the season or they have just been used for the initial run.

The successful shakedown of the car marked an emotional moment for the Lotus team, which was only granted an entry for the 2010 season back in September.

Having undertaken the first engine fire-up of the car on Saturday, the team travelled to Silverstone to get some mileage on it before its official launch in London on Friday.

Team principal Tony Fernandes admitted that the first run with the new car had meant a lot to him. "Shakedown started. Quite a few tears," he wrote on his official Twitter feed.

Lotus is scheduled to begin proper testing of the car at next week's third pre-season F1 test at Jerez in Spain.
