BERLIN: Juara dunia tujuh kali, Michael Schumacher (gambar) mengakui terpaksa mewarna rambut untuk menyembunyikan uban yang semakin banyak di kepalanya, namun pemandu berusia 41 tahun itu berkata dia sangat bersedia menghadapi perlumbaan Formula Satu (F1) ketika ini.
Bintang Jerman yang mengejutkan dunia F1 pada Disember lalu apabila menandatangani kontrak tiga tahun bersama Mercedes GP memberitahu akhbar: "Saya mula mewarnakan rambut... mungkin pada 2005." Schumacher turut mendedahkan dia mengambil ujian menguji tahap penglihatannya tapi menegaskan: "Saya tidak perlukan kanta mata."
Malah bekas pemandu lagenda Ferrari itu berkata dia sudah kehilangan lima kilogram berat badan setelah tambah berisi sejak meninggalkan kerjayanya pada 2006.
Kini dia mendapat berat badan yang sesuai untuk berlumba iaitu 74 kilogram, malah Schumacher berkata dia amalkan rejim kecergasan seperti berenang dan bermain bola sepak.
"Saya berjoging sedikit kerana masih mengalami masalah lutut sejak berusia 14 tahun. Apa yang pelik saya boleh bermain bola sepak sehingga tiga jam tanpa apa-apa masalah tapi tidak mampu berjoging untuk hanya 45 minit," katanya.
"Saya juga banyak berenang ketika ini. Setengah jam sehari berenang kuak dada menjadikan saya berbeza." -AFP

Ex-BMW Sauber driver Nick Heidfeld will be the test and reserve driver for Mercedes GP Petronas this year, after failing to find a permanent race seat for 2010.
The German was linked with a drive at Mercedes before Silver Arrows opted for the returning Michael Schumacher. When that happened, “Quick Nick” was reported to be in talks with Renault and Lotus but none materialised.
“I am very pleased to be joining the Mercedes GP Petronas Formula 1 Team. It’s the team which has attracted the most interest in the close season, not only because of the comeback of Michael Schumacher, but also because this season sees the return of the Silver Arrows cars as a Mercedes-Benz works team for the first time in over 50 years
“While I would of course have preferred a seat as an active driver, I am really proud to be part of the new Silver Arrows team. I have seen how committed everyone at the team is and I feel the same. I will be doing my very best to support Michael and Nico this year,” Heidfeld said.
With Heidfeld on board, Mercedes GP Petronas now has three German drivers! |

Rosberg fastest at rain-hit Jerez opener
Teams’ preparations for the 2010 season suffered their first setback on Wednesday as the opening day of the Jerez test was largely washed out by rain.
After seven teams enjoyed perfect conditions at Valencia last week for the opening pre-season test, the wet weather that has been forecast for the Jerez region for several days hit the circuit with little more than 30 minutes on the clock wrecking Red Bull, Force India and Virgin’s attempts to get some first serious dry mileage on their respective cars.
Although it made the first day times largely meaningless, Mercedes GP can at least take some encouragement from the session after Nico Rosberg set the quickest dry time of anyone in the early minutes.
The German set a benchmark of 1m20.927s before the rain forced a change of plan, Rosberg trying the car on intermediate tyres for the first time as he went on to complete a total of 57 laps.
