Brawn confident Schumacher still has the edge


Eventhough Michael Schumacher has been sitting on the sidelines of FormulaOne for the past three years and is now forty one years old, making himthe oldest driver to compete in the pinnacle of Motorsports in the pastfifteen years, Mercedes team Principal, Ross Brawn, has no hesitationsabout the Germans capabilities.
Speakingto Autosport, Brawn revelled that he is more than confident thatSchumacher still has the much needed edge to win, something that wasapparent in recent karting events.....
"Ihave got no doubts that the talent and the ability are still there. Yousee little flashes of it when he takes part in competitions like theRace of Champions and karting races. They are not an absolute measure,but always the same guys win in them that win in F1. The guys thatSchumacher beat in those events says a lot."
Theother drivers Brawn is talking about include Schumachers formerFerrari teammates, Felipe Massa and Rubens Barrichello, the latterstill winning races in the recent 2009 championship and the man thatSchumacher will be replacing at Mercedes (Brawn) this season.

Just in time, F1 may outlaw double diffusers
Apparently, Formula 1 teams are close to outlawing the controversial double diffuser, Autosportis reporting.
The change would be effective starting in 2011.
Heres some of the details:


AUTOSPORT understands that technical chiefs discussed reducingdownforce levels in a meeting of FOTAs Technical Regulations WorkingGroup (TRWG) late last year, and agreed that the rules should bechanged to effectively outlaw double diffusers.
The teams want to create regulations that require the floor to be acontinuous section if taken through a longitudinal or lateral plane Cwhich if achieved will get rid of the slots in the floor that havemade the double diffuser concept work.
It is understood that efforts are now being made to sort out thewording of the regulations to ensure that there are no loopholes thatwill allow anyone to continue using a double diffuser.
Once the wording of the rules has been sorted, it will then be putto the FIAs official Technical Working Group for ratification prior togoing through the channels required for it to get put into the 2011regulations.
It is estimated that the reduction in downforce caused by the doublediffuser ban would result in the cars being slowed by around one secondper lap...

Michael Schumacher completes GP2 test
Seven-times world champion Michael Schumacher set out on the road backto Formula One by testing a GP2 development car in southern Spain.
The 41-year-old German, returning with Mercedes after retiring as aFerrari driver in 2006, completed 52 laps of the Jerez track beforeheavy rain and gusty conditions halted the session. He said it was goodto be back.
"Very positive. The feeling is there straightaway," said Schumacher.
"LuckilyI have never given up in terms of driving something, either motorbikesor go-karts. I had a test obviously last summer in a Formula One (car)so it is straightforward to bring the car back to the limit."
Schumacher,Formula One's most successful driver, had to abandon a planned comebackas a stand-in with Ferrari last season due to the lingering effects ofa neck injury suffered in a motorcycle accident.
He has sincesigned a multi-year deal with Mercedes, who have taken over Brawn, asworld champion Jenson Button's replacement. He will continue testing onWednesday and Thursday.
"Despite the weather not being what weall would have liked all my senses were nevertheless on full alert -this alone was worth it. I felt comfortable out on the track from thevery beginning," he said.
"We have two purposes, one is to getas many kilometres as possible for myself and the second priority is toget to know the engineers and get to work together."
Schumacher,who has twice before driven for British-based teams, said he wassettling in well and preparations for the new season were on track.
"Brackley is already kind of home after the second time being there...so overall we are pretty much set," he said.
GP2is Formula's One's support series at race weekends, with all teamsusing the same Renault-powered cars. Formula One teams are not allowedto test until the first official session in Valencia on February 1.
