Schumacher thrilled with first day back
Michael Schumacher said his excitement at his first test with Mercedes at Valencia today (Monday) was comparable to the first time he drove a Formula 1 car nearly 20 years ago.
The seven times world champion made his debut with his new team as the testing ban finally ended, taking over from team-mate Nico Rosberg for the final 90 minutes and getting up to third in the final results for the day.
Although Schumacher drove a 2007 Ferrari when evaluating his fitness last summer and spent three days in a GP2 car last month, today's test marked the real start of his eagerly anticipated comeback.
"In a way it's like 1991, honestly," he said.
"When I came into Formula 1 I was shocked on the first lap and extremely excited on the second and further laps – and it is exactly like that today.
"I feel like a young little boy that has a toy in his hands and then just enjoys himself."
Although he was unwilling to be drawn on the car's performance today – replying "I hope so, but this is yet to be proved" when asked if the Mercedes was a potential title contender – Schumacher was satisfied with the team's start.
"I think we have done a very good job," he said.
"The guys did a superb job being out there, just making a few control checks and making the car reliable.
"We did more than 80 laps, and for the first day that is a superb job."
He also underlined that he had no fitness problems, having fully recovered from the neck injury that prevented his planned comeback with Ferrari last summer.
"I am [feeling] very good," Schumacher said.
"I have worked out very well and prepared myself extremely precisely and that's the result."
Schumacher has raised eyebrows by continuing to use the red helmet he adopted for the second half of his F1 career, a design generally associated with his former team Ferrari.
But he insisted his helmet colours had no link to his old employer.
"That's my sign," he said.
"At the time there was a completely different reason why I chose this colour, nothing to do with Ferrari."
He admitted that seeing Ferrari, his team from 1996 to 2009, working without him felt odd.
"Naturally to suddenly see my old car on the track and not sitting in it, it is a strange sensation," said Schumacher.
"But it was good to see my 'brother' [old friend Felipe Massa] on the track, in the car and I'll enjoy seeing my friends down at Ferrari some time this week."

Barrichello tells Rosberg to get out!
Although he didn’t have any nasty intentions when he uttered the words, Williams’s driver Rubens Barrichello has warned his young colleague over at Mercedes Grand Prix, Nico Rosberg, to get out of the team and away from the position of being Michael Schumacher’s teammate as quickly as he can.
"Yeah. Get out of there! That is the only thing I can tell him. He needs to drive fast and don't crash: Ross will always tell you that before the race," he told Autosport. “He [Nico] is a great talent and I wish him all the best, and maybe tomorrow you will see the newspapers saying, 'Rubens tells Nico to get out of there', but I am not being bad about it.”
Rubens spent many years being teammate to Schumacher at Ferrari where he was forced to take a back seat to the German, even giving up a fifth place to Michael, who was sixth, just in case he may need that one point later in the season, and no one will ever forget Austriagate where he was forced to give up the win in controversial fashion.
Both Nico and Michael were on duty for Mercedes on the opening day of the first test session of the season with Schumacher finishing the day over half a second faster than his young German teammate.
This showed many, including Barrichello that Michael hasn’t slowed any in his three years away from the sport and coupled with his knowledge of being the seven time world champions teammate for so many years has prompted the warning.
“Knowing what I know, and seeing how fast Michael went today, it is going to be a tough job (for Nico). I wish him all the best because I think he is a talented boy who can be world champion. If he has the chances of being world champion in the same team as Michael, then he can be world champion anywhere. Let's put it this way," Barrichello added.
