Thomas Vermalen's winner four minutes into added time helped Arsene Wenger's team climb to within one point of third-placed Tottenham with a vital victory
Arsenal FC
Wojciech Szczesny 5.5
Beaten at his near-post by Ben Arfa's sweetly struck goal early on. Had the cigar out for the second half.
Bacary Sagna 7.0
Provided excellent support for Walcott down the right flank and completeley negated the notable threat of Gutierrez.
Thomas Vermaelen 7.5
Epically won the match for Arsenal four minutes into added time after making a brilliant run from the back. Defended solidly, if a little ungainly at times.
Laurent Koscielny 7.0
Enhanced his ever growing reputation by minimising the danger of Demba Ba and smartly dealing with any danger, although he was booked for an over-zealous challenge on the striker.
Kieran Gibbs 5.5
Surged forward with purpose and poise but his defensive positioning was questionable and the left-back was easily outsmarted by Ben Arfa for Newcastle's goal.
Tomas Rosicky 8.5
With a new contract signed and sealed, the Czech continued his rebirth with a dynamic display. His pass to Walcott was instrumental in Arsenal's first goal, he tracked back with barely concealed zeal to help stem counter-attacks and twice nearly put his team 2-1 up. But it was the Czech's hunger and technical excellence that really stood out. Subbed with 15 minutes left.
Mikel Arteta 6.5
Showed no ill effects from the head injury that forced him off the field at Liverpool nine days ago. His sensible distribution enabled Arsenal to dominate.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 6.5
Had the occasional bright moment in a quiet-ish first half but was far more influential after the break and nearly brought the house down by teeing up a volley for himself from outside the box that fizzed over the bar. Subbed with 22 minutes left.
Alex Song 7.0
His power and energy helped Arsenal dominate the midfield, and the Cameroon international demonstrated his growing influence by launching the attack that led to his team's winning goal.
Robin van Persie 7.5
Fizzed with menace and added to his catalogue of wonderfully conceived goals with an emphatic equaliser, his 26th league strike of the season. Missed five other good chances, drawing four smart saves from Krul and once misjudging a Walcott cross.
Theo Walcott Top of the Match 8.5
There will probably still be scorch marks on the turf in the morning given the number of times Walcott left Newcastle defenders trailing in his wake. Set up Van Persie for the opener on an evening when his crossing matched his running.
• Substitutions
Aaron Ramsey 6.0
Had some nice touches in a 15-minute cameo on his comeback from injury.
Gervinho 5.0
Added to his vast catalogue of horrid misses by inexplicably turning an 82nd minute close-range volley wide of the post.
