NEW YORK -- Virgin unveiled the latest addition to Richard Branson's luxury fleet on Friday: an underwater plane that will fly riders into the depths of the Caribbean Sea.
Guests on Necker Island, a retreat in the British Virgin Islands, will be able to dive underwater in a submarine dubbed the Necker Nymph for $25,000 a week. But that's only after shelling out around $300,000 for a one-week stay on Necker, the private island owned by billionaire and Virgin Group chairman Richard Branson.
Beginning on Feb. 20, two riders and a pilot and will be able to take the plunge from land, or from a boat. The underwater plane uses the downward pressure on its wings to fly through the water for up to two hours at a time, while an open cockpit will give riders a 360-degree view.
The Necker Nymph's typical speed is 2 to 5 nautical miles per hour and it can dive more than 100 feet, said Karen Hawkes, a spokeswoman for Hawkes Ocean Technologies, the company that designed the Nymph. |

Stefan to test car at Portimao this month
Stefan GP has announced it will test its first Formula 1 car later this month in Portugal, as it continues to push with its plans to race in the sport this year despite not having an entry.
Following today's announcement that the Serbia-based squad will send equipment to Bahrain for the first of the season, the team said it will test its car at Portimao on 25-28 February.
Stefan GP said it will unveil the Stefan S-01 before the tests.
AUTOSPORT has learned former Williams driver Kazuki Nakajima will be one of the team's drivers.
Stefan GP said its car has been developed by the team and with technical support from Toyota, with which is has agreed a technical partnership.
The engine it will use is the Stefan RG-01, also serviced by Toyota.
The team said it will be testing two drivers at Portimao.
Stefan GP released a picture of its offices, in which team owner Zoran Stefanovich can be seen with former McLaren chief designer Mike Coughlan.

Virgin reveals 'all-digital' car
The brand-new Virgin Racing has unveiled its first car as it becomesone of Formula 1's four new teams for the 2010 season. The VR-01, to bedriven by Timo Glock and Lucas di Grassi, has been dubbed F1's 'firstall-digital' car due to designer Nick Wirth's sole use of computertechnology as opposed to wind tunnel development.
With John Booth's Manor GP entrant having been renamed Virgin Racingfollowing the buy-in from Sir Richard Branson's worldwide group, theofficial team launch was held in London's Notting Hill last Decemberahead of Wednesday's gathering in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire.
NickWirth's return to Formula 1 sees the welcoming back of the man who wasowner of the Simtek team in the mid-1990s as well as being anaerodynamicist and Chief Designer at Benetton. The Cosworth-powered carwill be shaken down on-track in a private test at Silverstone onThursday and Friday of this week.
"Today is a very proud day foreveryone involved with Virgin Racing," Technical Director Wirthcommented. "However on this occasion, where the car is the star, I wantto pay tribute to all the amazing people at Wirth Research who deserveso much of the credit for the VR-01.
"Putting together an F1team, assembling an engineering group and designing a new car fromscratch is an epic task in the timeframe we have been working to.
"Ihave been fortunate to have worked with the very best designers in F1and I am well aware of exactly what it takes to be successful in thissport. When you see what the existing teams have achieved - using theconventional but proven design approach - it is unsurprising that thereis a great deal of scepticism about our all-CFD (Computational FluidDynamics) approach.
"But we are competing in a sport that isundergoing significant change, having come face-to-face with today'sharsh economic realities. Under resource restriction, convention willbecome too costly and necessity really will be the mother of invention.I have absolute belief in the digital design process and theopportunity to put the all-CFD approach to the test at the highestlevel - to demonstrate that this could be the way for the future of F1- is very, very exciting."
