Technical update: Engines used so far

Since the start of the 2009 campaign, each driver has been allocated the use of eight engines per season, with the order of the powerplants undetermined. With only the five season-ending ‘flyaway’ races to go, we take a look at the figures.

As compiled by the official F1 website, the digits show that the Sauber of Nick Heidfeld (formerly Pedro de la Rosa’s car) is now on its ninth engine and for that reason took a 10-place grid drop penalty at Spa two races ago.

Ferrari are now on their eighth units although previous engines can be used without incurring a penalty. Four drivers have fired up only six engines so far: World Championship leader Mark Webber, Rubens Barrichello and the Renault pairing.

Engine usage up to and including the Italian Grand Prix:

Mark Webber / Red Bull-Renault 6
Lewis Hamilton / McLaren-Mercedes 7
Fernando Alonso / Ferrari 8
Jenson Button / McLaren-Mercedes 7
Sebastian Vettel / Red Bull-Renault 7
Felipe Massa / Ferrari 8
Nico Rosberg / Mercedes GP 7
Robert Kubica / Renault 6
Michael Schumacher / Mercedes GP 7
Adrian Sutil / Force India-Mercedes 7
Rubens Barrichello / Williams-Cosworth 6
Kamui Kobayashi / Sauber-Ferrari 7
Vitaly Petrov / Renault 6
Nico Hülkenberg / Williams-Cosworth 7
Vitantonio Liuzzi / Force India-Mercedes 7
Sébastien Buemi / Toro Rosso-Ferrari 7
Jaime Alguersuari / Toro Rosso-Ferrari 7
Heikki Kovalainen / Lotus-Cosworth 7
Lucas di Grassi / Virgin-Cosworth 7
Jarno Trulli / Lotus-Cosworth 7
Timo Glock / Virgin-Cosworth 7
Bruno Senna / Hispania-Cosworth 7
Sakon Yamamoto / Hispania-Cosworth 7
Nick Heidfeld / Sauber-Ferrari 9

Singapore GP: Stats and history
Wed, 22 Sep 12:54:00 2010

Key statistics ahead of the Formula One night race in Singapore, plus a history that includes Nelson Piquet Jr's famous deliberate crash.

WINS

Red Bull's Australian Mark Webber has won four races this season, McLaren's Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari's Fernando Alonso three each. McLaren's Jenson Button and Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel have two victories.

Ferrari have won a total of 213 times (from 807 races contested) while McLaren are the second most successful team with 169 victories. Williams have 113 wins. Red Bull have 12.

Alonso's win in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza this month was Ferrari's first at the Milanese circuit since 2006 and the 24th of his career.

The Spaniard is now level with the late Argentine five-times champion Juan Manuel Fangio in the all-time winning list. Only seven drivers have ever won more.

If Alonso wins again, the double champion will equal the career tallies of Austrian triple champion Niki Lauda and Britain's late double world champion Jim Clark.

Michael Schumacher, now at Mercedes, holds the record of 91 wins.

POLE POSITION

Alonso, Hamilton, Vettel and Webber are the only drivers to have won from pole this season. Only five of the 14 races have been won by drivers starting on pole.

Vettel will be chasing his eighth pole of the season while Red Bull are after their 13th in 15 races.

Only two teams have ever managed more than 12 poles in a single season - McLaren with 15 in 1988 and 1989 and Williams with 15 in 1992 and 1993. Williams hold the record for successive poles, with 24 in a row in 1992/93.

Alonso's pole at Monza was Ferrari's first since Brazil in November 2008, 30 races previously.

FRONT ROW

Red Bull have locked out the front row in six races this season.

Monza ended a run of 17 successive races, dating back to September 13 2009, with at least one Red Bull on the front row.

World champion Button qualified in second place at Monza, his first time on the front row since Turkey in June last year.

RECENT RACES

2009 - Lewis Hamilton (McLaren)

Hamilton led from start to finish while compatriot Jenson Button extended his overall lead with fifth place for Brawn.

Germany's Timo Glock was second in what turned out to be his last race for Toyota.
Fernando Alonso was third for Renault, the team racing under a suspended permanent ban for fixing the previous year's race.

Mark Webber had brake problems and crashed after 45 laps, Red Bull team-mate Sebastian Vettel started on the front row but collected a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pit lane and ended up fourth.

2008 - Fernando Alonso (Renault)

The most controversial race in recent F1 history, triggering one of the sport's biggest scandals when the story emerged nearly a year later.

Alonso won after Brazilian team-mate Nelson Piquet crashed and brought out the safety car shortly after the Spaniard had pitted.

Ferrari's Felipe Massa, who had started on pole, finished 13th after a bungled pitstop in the confusion and lost the title that year by a single point.

Piquet revealed later that he had crashed to order. Renault were handed a suspended permanent ban while former team boss Flavio Briatore was banned for life - later reduced to extend to only 2013.

Circuit guide: Singapore
Tue, 21 Sep 10:56:00 2010

A top Formula One team reveals the key components of set-up for the night race at the Singapore street circuit.

The 5.1km Singapore street circuit is one of the slowest of the season, with teams likely to run with high downforce.

Tyres

Much like Monaco, grip levels are low at the street circuit. Softer tyres will offer good grip on a green track surface at the beginning of the weekend. However, like any temporary circuit, grip levels will ramp up as the track evolves and rubber is laid down.

Aerodynamics

After Monaco, Singapore is the second slowest circuit of the season. High downforce is therefore important to give the car good stability under braking and to push the car into the ground in the corner exits to maximise traction and ensure good acceleration.

Brakes

The circuit is quite demanding on the brakes with wear rates similar to somewhere like Melbourne. It is not the severity of the braking but rather the regularity that makes it so demanding as the brakes will get little respite. Efficient brake cooling is therefore a must.

Suspension

Suspension set-up is one of the most difficult things to predict when planning for a new circuit. However, for any street circuit with a high percentage of low-speed corners, mechanical grip is always valuable and drivers and teams will search for a supple enough suspension to get good clean exits out of the slow corners and a car that can ride the bumps and any changes of camber.

Engine and gearbox

Street circuits tend to be less severe on the engine due to the low percentage of the lap spent at full throttle, but the engine can still be under stress as it will be used in a very stop-start fashion. Closely-spaced gear ratios will be used in order to optimise acceleration and get the most from the engine at low speeds.

16:33:09        GREEN LIGHT
16:30:02        We're now in a 7-minute break before the 15-minute Q2 begins
16:29:52        Massa, of course, is the most significant name there
16:29:42        Those cars are lining up 18th to 24th on tomorrow's grid
16:29:33        ELIMINATED IN Q1: Glock, Kovalainen, di Grassi, Trulli, Klien, Senna, Massa
16:27:39        So a last-gasp by Heikki puts him up two places
16:27:31        Kovalainen goes 19th; he's split the Virgin cars
16:27:20        He crosses the line and is 1.2 seconds down on Klien, his team-mate
16:26:53        Senna is fighting the HRT through Turns 22 and 23
16:26:33        So it looks like Virgin have out-qualified Lotus fair and square
16:26:25        ...no he can't; he sets a slower time than before
16:26:12        Can Trulli move ahead of the Lotus cars now?...
16:26:06        He's currently the leading Lotus in 20th place
16:25:55        Trulli is on a lap now, at Turn 19
16:25:50        Can Lotus move ahead of or split the Virgins?
16:25:41        As usual, any laps which have begun may be finished
16:25:34        Q1 OVER
16:25:31        CHEQUERED FLAG
16:25:24        However, he's still about 1.5 behind 21st-placed Kovalainen
16:25:12        Klien is 22nd and improves by 9 tenths on one lap
16:24:56        Alguersuari is still up in 7th
16:24:51        Of the top six, only Kubica (P4) is on-track now
16:24:40        1 MINUTE REMAINING IN Q1
16:24:29        Can Trulli or Kovalainen respond to that?
16:24:24        Note also that Virgin, with both cars, are ahead of Lotus
16:24:17        That confirms that Massa, without a lap time, is last on the grid
16:24:08        ...Senna, Massa
16:24:04        Q1 DROP ZONE: Glock, di Grassi, Trulli, Kovalainen, Klien...
16:23:31        2 MINUTES REMAINING IN Q1
16:23:23        He had two spins in practice earlier alone
16:23:17        Bruno spins back across the track and he's going again
16:23:12        He's thankfully managed to move off the racing line
16:22:55        Senna's Hispania is spun and facing the wrong way
16:22:48        YELLOW FLAG
16:22:45        Not for long: Alonso is now fastest
16:22:40        Webber moves up to 2nd place and it's now a Red Bull 1-2
16:22:34        Vettel is in the pits now
16:20:30        5 MINUTES REMAINING IN Q1
16:20:24        Kubica goes 3rd in the leading Renault
16:20:16        Nick Heidfeld is currently 9th; a great performance on his comeback
16:19:56        11th is Barrichello from Kobayashi, Hulkenberg and Petrov
16:19:48        6th is Hamilton from Schumacher, Rosberg, Heidfeld and Liuzzi
16:19:39        CURRENT ORDER: Vettel, Alonso, Webber, Button, Alguersuari
16:19:27        ...which is ahead of team-mate Rosberg
16:19:22        Schumacher is currently 7th on the timesheets
16:19:13        ...will be coming from the back of the grid tomorrow night
16:19:06        This is a fascinating situation; it looks like Massa and Schumacher...
16:17:27        Is that the end for Michael too, then?
16:17:22        The German, who has looked strong here, walks out of the garage
16:17:14        More drama: Schumacher climbs out of his car in the garage
16:16:41        Just under 9 minutes to go now in this delayed and 20-minute Q1
16:16:14        ...engine, gearbox or electronic
16:16:09        Ferrari continue to investigate whether Massa's problem is...
16:15:53        YET TO POST LAP TIME: Barrichello, Hulkenberg, Kubica, Sutil
16:15:39        Alonso and Barrichello also go out, so both Williams are out
16:15:30        We know he's going back five places anyway because of his penalty
16:15:19        Q1 is back underway and Hulkenberg is out first
16:15:12        SESSION RESTARTS
16:15:09        GREEN LIGHT
16:14:37        We have only about 30 seconds to go before it's go again...
16:14:29        SESSION WILL RESTART AT 22:15
16:12:55        We know that was part of the plan but has Massa now lost one?
16:12:48        About Ferrari, we know they're already on their eighth and final engines
16:12:25        ...for a gearbox change
16:12:22        Other things to note are that Hulkenberg has a 5-place penalty...
16:11:38        Sakon Yamamoto watches on at HRT
16:10:53        "I have a problem with the car, I think it's engine," says Massa via radio
16:10:44        All of the cars are returning to the pit lane
16:10:39        ...this session restarts
16:10:36        We will have 10 minutes and 35 seconds remaining when...
16:10:26        It's also very bad news for Ferrari's Constructors' Championship
16:10:15        This is, of course bad news for Alonso too in the championship
16:10:07        The Brazilian walks away from his stricken car
16:09:57        He's parked on the inside of one of the tight infield corners
16:09:48        Massa's Ferrari has a problem and is right on the racing line
16:09:38        This session has been stopped
16:09:34        RED FLAG
16:09:33        ...dangerous place
16:09:29        Felipe Massa's Ferrari is stopped in what looks like a...
16:09:16        Vettel improves now: 1:46.960
16:09:04        We have a yellow flag for some reason
16:09:00        Webber has just moved up into third position
16:08:55        YELLOW FLAG
16:08:29        Vettel now sets an even quicker first Sector 1
16:08:12        Liuzzi is also in the pits, currently 8th quickest
16:08:03        Kubica, Sutil and the two Williams are yet to go out
16:07:54        Hamilton is on the Esplanade Bridge now
16:07:31        He's the man to beat, juding by practice form

16:06:44        Also, Christian Klien is subbing for Yamamoto at HRT

16:05:48        ...which is entering the single-file Anderson Bridge

16:05:18        ...and goes fastest: 1:48.254
16:05:12        Button completes a lap...
16:05:07        CURRENT ORDER: Hamilton, Kobayashi, Liuzzi, Buemi, Glock
16:05:00        Kobayashi's Sauber is now 2nd
16:04:56        Buemi goes 3rd
16:04:49        ...Hamilton goes P1 on 1:48.454
16:04:42        He's exiting the final corner...
16:04:37        Hamilton almost hits the Turn 19 wall now
16:04:29        It's Liuzzi, Glock, Petrov, di Grassi, Senna, Schumacher
16:04:21        Liuzzi is currently P1: 1:50.223
16:04:13        He's now out of shape, very close to the wall at Turn 19
16:03:57        Petrov zooms across the Esplanade Bridge now
16:03:00        That of course has wrecked that first lap
16:02:53        His right-rear wheel hit the AstroTurf and the car was completely sideways
16:02:42        The 7-time World Champion is completely out of shape at Turn 2
16:02:34        "All times laps will be in mix one," Andrew Shovlin tells Schumacher
16:02:15        Schumacher begins a flying lap now
16:01:42        ...are on-track now

16:01:31        Hamilton, Schumacher, Rosberg, Petrov, Liuzzi, Buemi...
16:01:22        It also means water does not evaporate off it
16:01:13        Of course, we have no sunlight here to warm it up
16:01:06        The track is now two degrees cooler than the air
16:00:16        The track remained damp in final practice earlier this evening

15:59:03        Track temperature: 28°C

17:05:28        This is absolutely crucial, his most crucial lap of the year
17:05:18        He's currently 7th and he won't have time for another lap
17:05:10        Vettel starts his last lap right now
17:05:03        1 MINUTE REMAINING
17:04:57        So, the final laps are coming up now
17:04:51        He will only have about 5 seconds to cross the line, we believe
17:04:23        Button is the last to go back out
17:04:07        Can Vettel get back up there?
17:03:58        2 MINUTES REMAINING
17:03:32        Vettel is the first Red Bull to leave the pits
17:03:23        Hamilton too
17:03:22        Alonso is also going back out now
17:03:16        He's had his tyres changed and he's back out on-track now
17:03:09        Barrichello comes in for a racing-style stop
17:03:04        Those two will be done by the time the others do their final laps
17:02:56        3 MINUTES REMAINING
17:02:45        Kubica has just this moment left the pits
17:02:40        Kobayashi is on his out-lap now
17:02:31        5th is Barrichello from Rosberg, Vettel and Schumacher
17:02:23        CURRENT ORDER: Alonso, Hamilton, Webber, Button
17:02:15        He's P7 and 2.6 seconds down
17:02:05        ...he's now got a massive challenge on his hands
17:01:58        So instead of Vettel posting a rapid lap, as we expected...
17:01:50        The others now peel back off into the pits
17:01:44        He, as will Kubica, will just do one lap
17:01:39        Kobayashi is on-track now
17:01:13        5 MINUTES REMAINING
17:01:04        Barrichello is 5th on his first lap, very respectable
17:00:56        He's already voiced his opinions over that...
17:00:49        Replays show Hamilton bouncing over the chicane
17:00:37        So, Vettel made a mess of his first lap and is right down
17:00:28        Schumacher is 7th
17:00:24        So it's Alonso, Hamilton, Webber, Button, Rosberg, Vettel
17:00:16        Webber goes 3rd
17:00:14        Vettel splits the Mercedes but it's a bad first lap
17:00:07        Rosberg and Schumacher are next
17:00:03        Alonso now goes P1 for Ferrari
16:59:58        Hamilton goes quicker than Button
16:59:54        They'll only be doing two, or three maxium
16:59:45        Where will they all be when this first round of laps begins?
16:59:37        Vettel is best in the first sector
16:59:31        Hamilton is fastest in Sector 2
16:57:23        Barrichello does go out now
16:56:35        Will they stay in the garage and then complete a single flying lap?
16:56:27        All but Barrichello, Kubica and Kobayashi go out
16:56:20        It's go for 10 minutes to decide the Singapore 2010 grid
16:56:13        Q3 BEGINS
16:56:11        GREEN LIGHT
16:56:09        CONTESTING POLE: Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes, Barrichello, Kubica, Kobayashi and Alonso
16:55:48        We're ready for Q3 now under lights in Singapore
16:53:01        It was Vettel, Alonso, Webber, Hamilton, Button
16:52:56        The top five are the top five in the championship, in Q2
16:52:46        We now have an 8-minute break going on until Q3
16:52:02        He slams his helmet onto its shelf
16:51:55        Nico Hulkenberg is not happy in the Williams garage
16:51:01        As it happened, he stayed 9th anyway
16:50:54        He asked if he had enough fuel for another lap but he didn't
16:50:46        Schumacher's final lap saw him cut across the inside of Turn 1
16:50:30        ...Rosberg, Kubica, Barrichello, Schumacher, Kobayashi
16:50:23        Q2 TOP TEN: Vettel, Alonso, Webber, Hamilton, Button...
16:50:09        ...Buemi, Heidfeld, Sutil, Liuzzi
16:50:04        ELIMINATED IN Q2: Alguersuari, Hulkenberg, Petrov...
16:49:52        So it's 16th and 17th for Force India
16:49:47        He is only 16th
16:49:45        Sutil has an armful of understeer into the penultimate corner
16:49:34        He doesn't, Liuzzi stays 17th and that's bad news
16:49:25        He's currently 17th, so needs to move up
16:49:19        Liuzzi could move into the top ten
16:49:13        Nick is 15th on his return
16:49:08        Heidfeld set a personal best first sector but it's not enough
16:48:39        Vettel pits, currently P1
16:48:33        Alguersuari stays 11th, he's not in the top ten
16:48:26        The laps are being finished now

FIA hands out selection of fines on Saturday

Saturday in Singapore marked a busy day for the FIA race stewards, who were required to give out a total of seven penalties ranging from a reprimand to a fine of 20,000 dollars from across the third free practice session and qualifying.

This weekend the three usual adjudicators are joined by American and former racing driver Danny Sullivan, who first took on the role for the German Grand Prix in July.

FIA Communications, Saturday 25 September:

Jarno Trulli, Lotus
Reprimanded for unsafe release in front of Lucas di Grassi during final practice

Christian Klien, HRT
Two separate fines for speeding in the pit lane during qualifying, one of 6,600 euros (5,600 pounds) followed by a second of 5,800 euros (5,000 pounds)

Timo Glock, Virgin Racing
Fine of 3,400 euros (2,900 pounds) for pit lane speeding in qualifying

Bruno Senna, HRT
Fine of 7,600 euros (6,500 pounds) for pit lane speeding in qualifying

Michael Schumacher, Mercedes GP
Investigation into a personal fastest lap which was set under yellow flags in Q2; no action taken follow telemetry analysis and evidence from both the driver and a team representative

Nick Heidfeld, Sauber
Fine of 20,000 dollars (12,600 pounds) for unsafe pit release in front of Michael Schumacher during Q2
