Set up astronomy clubs for children

KUALA LUMPUR: The prime minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, today called for the setting up of astronomy clubs for children nationwide and the introduction of astronomy subjects such as space science in schools.

She said this would allow the children to interact besides helping to spark creativity among them while stretching their imagination further.

"I would also welcome any initiative to incorporate such an interesting subject as part of the school co-curriculum," she said at the launch of the book, "Journey To Space: A Memoir of Malaysia's First Angkasawan", and a DVD entitled "Angkasawan Inspirasiku" here.

Rosmah said that currently only a small percentage of this knowledge was actually infused in schools, universities and other academic institutions in the country.

"Once they become familiar and understand the importance of science, it would become easier for them to pursue their study in the field of science and technology," she added.

Commenting on the book written by Angkasawan Negara Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, Rosmah believed that it would appeal to the younger generation who are interested in becoming astronauts and would also serve as a wonderful account of a positive role model for them to emulate.

She said readers would also get to learn of the many interesting experiences of a true-blue Malaysian hero's journey, along with the hard work and dedication it took for him to realise his ambition to become an angkasawan, a dream that he had since the age of 10.

"It was said that the footprints left behind by the astronauts will last for thousands of years. So I am proud to mention here that our Angkasawan Negara not only left his footprint in space, but also a legacy for other Malaysians to emulate."

Rosmah said she believed that throught sheer determination, hard work and dare to dream of the impossible, Malaysia would have more children who would finally grow up and comfortably fill the shoes that Dr Sheikh Muszaphar left behind.

The book, published by MPH Publishing, tells about Dr Sheikh Muszaphar's experience in the Angkasawan programme and is retailed at RM60 for the hardcover edition and RM25 for the softcover edition.

The Malay version of this memoir, entitled "Kembara Ke Angkasa: Catatan Memoir Angkasawan Pertama Negara", would be in the market soon. - Bernama

..dah ramai budak2 zaman sekarang minat bidang sains dan astronomi ni... bagus juga -
dulu tak pernah dengar yang ada budak2 bercita-cita nak jadi angkasawan (ada tapi segelintir)
dulu bidang astronomi pun jarang yang dengar or ambil tahu.. .sekarang semua nak tahu dan
belajar pasal astronomi -

kat sekolah mcm2 da ade kelab....
kelab astronomi pn blh digabungkn dgn kelab sains....
x perlu nk tubuhkn kelab bru sbb kite x mempunyai kepakaran yg khusus di sekolah

kalau aktiviti kelab astronomi ni memang fun macam anime "Sora no Manimani" ni..
aku rasa ramai yang akan join.....

Takpa.boleh jadi yg persendirian punya.Eden rasa apa yg eden dapat dalam pengkajian eden tentang angkasa lepas ,Dr Syeikh Muzaffar pun tak pernah jumpa.Cuma eden kekurangan peralatan seperti High Zoom Camera untuk mengambil gambar objek pelik yg selalu eden nampak kat langit terutama pada malam yg cerah tanpa bulan.
