Let’s beef up the team spirit

PETALING JAYA: All-England champion Lee Chong Wei is calling on his team-mates to revive the solid team spirit on display in the Sudirman Cup world mixed team championships in China last year to put up a good showing in the Thomas Cup Finals in Kuala Lumpur next month.
Malaysia will host the Finals after a lapse of 10 years and expectations are on the squad to take full advantage of playing on home ground.
Chong Wei and Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, who are the men’s singles and men’s doubles world No. 1 respectively, will not be the only ones the team will bank on to win points in the Finals scheduled for May 9-16 but also veterans Wong Choong Hann and Mohd Hafiz Hashim.
It will be Chong Wei’s fourth campaign in the Finals and his first on home ground. And he wants to make it a memorable outing.
“Our initial target is to make it to the semi-finals and I believe the current squad stand a good chance as any of the other top teams,” he said.
“China may be more balanced than the others but we are playing on home ground and anything can happen. The important thing is that we prepare well and have strong team spirit.
“We showed strong team spirit in the Sudirman Cup in Guangzhou last year. Everyone played their roles in helping each other and we managed to win the bronze for the first time. It wasn’t easy previously as we found it difficult to stay in Division One.
“I’m proud to be the captain of that team and I hope we have the same spirit in the Thomas Cup.”
Chong Wei is skipping the Asian championships (ABC) in New Delhi this week to prepare for the Thomas Cup Finals.
At the Sudirman Cup championships last year, Malaysia reached the semi-finals for the first time before losing 0-3 to the eventual winners China.
For the Thomas Cup Finals, third seeds Malaysia should have an easy passage to the quarter-finals as they have been drawn in Group B with Japan and Nigeria.
But it gets interesting after that as a fresh draw will be made for the quarter-finals involving the top two teams in each group.
All the four group winners will be seeded with the top two going into different halves of the draw. A draw will determine the positions of the third and fourth seeded teams and also the fifth-eighth seeds. |
