Selection of pairs for Thomas Cup an intriguing exercise
By RAJES PAUL

KUALA LUMPUR: The selection of the singles players for the Thomas Cup Finals will be a straightforward job but it will be an intriguing affair in the doubles as the deadline for naming the squad comes to an end this week.

For starters, China have already planned their doubles game plan for the Finals, earlier than expected.

They have ‘‘orchestrated’’ their doubles pecking order to their advantage and Malaysia’s chief coach Rexy Mainaky is well aware that China have gone to great lengths to beef up their doubles line-up.

Their former world champions and current world number eight Cai Yun-Fu Haifeng will be ranked as the second pair behind world number five Guo Zhengdong-Xu Chen for the Finals which will be held at the Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.

And their third ranked pair is set to be German Open winners Chai Biao-Zhang Dan.

“China’s strongest pair will be ranked as the second doubles and I think they have planned for this. This will certainly give them an advantage against the other title contenders – Indonesia, South Korea, Denmark and Malaysia,” said Rexy.

“Usually, China are rather weak in their doubles but this time around, they have a strong line-up.”

Although Malaysia have finalised their doubles line-up for the Finals during yesterday’s coaches’ meeting, Rexy said that they would prefer to keep it under wraps until the other teams reveal their team list.

The closing date for entries by name is on April 23. The pecking order of the team will be based on the April 22 world rankings.

“The coaches – Tan Kim Her, Pang Cheh Chang, Rosman Razak and Jeremy Gan and I – had a meeting today and we discussed our selection of three pairs for the Finals. The management (BAM general manager Kenny Goh), however, prefers that we make an official announcement on Friday,” said Rexy.

Seasoned campaigners Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari-Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif are sure to be in.

And among the second stringers – Ong Soon Hock-Hoon Thien How are the frontrunners but it is learnt that Tan Wee Kiong-Mak Hee Chun are still under consideration and it will all depend on a report from coach Chang Kim Wai when he returns with the players from the Asian Badminton Championships (ABC) in New Delhi today.

Soon Hock-Thien How and Wee Kiong-Hee Chun were the quarter-finalists at the ABC meet which ended on Sunday.

“It will also be interesting to find out about the other teams as they finalise either their second or third pairs. For now, we know Indonesia’s top pair is Markis Kido-Hendra Setiawan but we have no clue on who will be the second pair,” said Rexy.

“We are not sure about Denmark’s third pair too. The South Koreans are always full of surprises. They are set to name Lee Yong-dae-Jung Jae-sung as the top pair but it will be interesting to find out the other pairing in their team. They may field scratch pairs,” he said.

With Malaysia banking only on world number one Lee Chong Wei for a sure point in the singles in the Finals, it is important for the men’s doubles to rise to the occasion. The others set to be in the singles line-up for Malaysia are Wong Choong Hann, Mohd Hafiz Hashim and Tan Chun Seang.

For the record, Malaysia last won the Thomas Cup in 1992.

BAM plans go haywire as centralised training fails to get off

KUALA LUMPUR: Several plans have gone haywire for the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) as far as the Thomas-Uber Cup Finals preparation is concerned.

Yesterday, there was a hiccup when a centralised training for the premier team event failed to get off as planned at the Juara Stadium in Bukit Kiara.

National chief coach Rexy Mainaky had hoped for the singles and doubles players to train together but not all turned up for the stint.

Some of the doubles players will only return from New Delhi today while world No. 1 singles shuttler Lee Chong Wei did not show up for training after falling ill.

Team manager Datuk Sayed Abu Bakar Abdullah said: “We hope all will be able to train together on Wednesday (tomorrow). But the team will certainly go ahead with their plan for a motivation camp for the players from April 23-25 at Port Dickson. That should kick start everything.”

The arrival of BAM president Datuk Nadzmi Mohd Salleh from Germany had also been delayed due to the chaos in air travel following the Icelandic volcano ash. He was supposed to arrive this morning and hold a dinner for the Thomas-Uber Cup team tomorrow.

One important programme, however, took place as planned yesterday when BAM general manager Kenny Goh and Sayed took time to meet up with representatives from the ING Insurance Berhad over a sponsorship deal for the national team.
