Air Force Aims for Stealth-Detection Radar by 2020



Military authorities want to procure a radar capable of detecting stealth aircraft by the mid-2020s as China and Japan boost their military arsenal.

An Air Force officer on Wednesday said, " The Air Force first called for stealth-detection radar in July 2011, and the Joint Chiefs of Staff decided in November last year to build such a detection system in the long term. "

" The Agency for Defense Development and other institutes are developing a stealth-detection radar. Once we know how good the domestic technology is, we'll decide whether to develop the radar independently or buy it from abroad, " another military officer said.

The military is developing several models including low-frequency radar.

" Experts predict that stealth-detection radar will be developed in four to five years," Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin told the National Assembly's Defense Committee last month.

A military source said, " Nobody knows how much it'll cost to develop a stealth-detection radar because none exists so far. "

China, Japan and Russia are all developing or planning to procure stealth fighter jets between 2016 and early 2020.

China is developing two kinds of stealth fighters.

In December 2011, Japan picked the F-35 stealth fighter jet as its main next-generation fighter model and decided to procure 42 of them starting in 2016.

Russia is developing a stealth fighter with the goal of deploying it warfare-ready in 2016.




Korea Develops Core Stealth Technology



The Korean military has reportedly succeeded in developing the core technology for stealth fighter planes. Stealth technology is used to disguise aircraft or vessels from detection by radar, infrared or sound detectors. Stealth is considered a key field in future warfare, and world military powers such as the U.S., China, Japan and Russia have been focusing efforts on developing it.

A Korean military source on Monday said that the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) and other local defense research institutes began developing stealth fighter technology and application systems in 1999. They developed radar absorbent material by the end of 2002, and are now aiming to finish developing all core technologies for functional stealth by mid-2010.

Military authorities plan to finish tests of some of the radar absorbent material for application to weapons systems, including fighter jets, by the end of this year.

According to the military source, top-secret ground tests were done on F-4 fighter jets and miniature jet fighter models equipped with the radar absorbent material until 2007. The tests were satisfactory. It has not been revealed if the domestically developed material is ordinary paint or come in some other form. F-117 fighter bombers, an early U.S. stealth aircraft, used thick stealth painting. The newer F-22 stealth fighters reportedly use a much thinner coating.

The ADD and other local defense research institutes have also developed stealth configuration technology to design fighter jets and vessels that can effectively avoid radar detection.

The military source explained that Korea is developing stealth technology as " U.S. F-22s are already deployed for war-related duties, and neighboring countries such as China, Russia and Japan are striving to secure the stealth technology and apply it to their weapons systems with the aim of securing command of the air in Northeast Asia. "

KAI KFX-E



In October 2013 at the Seoul International Aerospace & Defense Exhibition, two concept models for the KF-X fighter were displayed. KAI's model, the KFX-E, was designed by the company as a single-engine aircraft with most systems developed for the T-50 trainer and no internal weapons bays. Experience from the T-50, and support provided by Lockheed for that aircraft, was seen as a cost-effective approach, as KAI officials saw a smaller and cheaper proposal to finally get the program to launch and enter service around the mid-2020s.

There are two versions of the KFX-E available, the standard one with a single fin and an optional one with two that would require more development work but has less radar reflection. Although the KFX-E was smaller than the F-35 Lightning II, it was heavier than both the T-50 and F-16, with a 14 percent higher internal fuel capacity than the F-16C Block 40 at 6.36 tons. Its larger wing compared to the F-16 would produce more drag and make it accelerate slower. The other model was designed by Seoul's Agency for Defense Development, who became a competitor to KAI when they judged the ADD design for a twin-engine plane requiring more domestic systems development as too ambitious.

There are actually two ADD proposals, the C103 and C203, both weighing 11 tons empty. They propose initially fielding a low-observable aircraft, then later versions would have full stealth and internal weapons bays. The ADD designs have the advantage of being worked on with Indonesia, the main foreign partner. The C103 and KFX-E have similar tail-aft sections, while the C203 has forward horizontal stabilizers.

Hypersonic Successor to Legendary SR-71 Blackbird Spy Plane Unveiled

Lockheed Martin’s famed Skunk Works has finally unveiled the long-awaited successor to the SR-71 Blackbird. Aviation Week and Space Technology’s Guy Norris pulled the covers off the project that Lockheed Martin is simply calling the SR-72. The new airplane will be roughly the same size as the record-setting Blackbird, but will be able to fly twice as fast as the jet that still holds the speed records.

The new spy plane will be capable of Mach 6 cruise speeds, making it the first hypersonic aircraft to enter service should it be produced. Only the rocket-powered North American X-15 was able to regularly fly those speeds, and the three examples built were used for research. The SR-71 Blackbird is legendary in aviation circles for its Mach 3 capabilities, and different iterations served as a spy plane for 35 years until its retirement in 1998. It still holds several records, including a flight from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. in 64 minutes, 20 seconds.

The new SR-72 has long been rumored and debated, and is part of the U.S. Air Force’s plan for hypersonic capabilities that will allow fast reaction for gathering intelligence around the world. A Mach 6 airplane fills the gap between current surveillance aircraft that can loiter for long periods of time, but don’t have the ability to transit to a new area quickly.

The SR-72 is also expected to have optional strike capabilities, according to Aviation Week.


The key to the new airplane, as it was with the SR-71, will be the engines. Lockheed Martin told Aviation Week the company has been working with Aerojet Rocketdyne to build an air breathing engine that combines both a traditional turbine and a scramjet to deliver the Mach 6 performance.

Normal turbine jet engines have problems operating at speeds beyond Mach 2. The original SR-71 used a complicated system of a movable nose cone on the engine, along with vents that prevented shockwaves from interfering with the flow, and slowed the air down enough so that it could be ingested by the engine. Though “ unstarts ” were a regular problem for Blackbird pilots, and caused problems throughout the life of the airplane.

The new SR-72 will use a turbine-based combined cycle (TBCC) that will employ the turbine engine at lower speeds, and use a scramjet at higher speeds. A scramjet engine is designed to operate at hypersonic velocities by compressing the air through a carefully designed inlet, but needs to be traveling supersonic before it is practical to begin with. So far research projects from NASA, the Air Force and other Pentagon entities have not been able to solve the problem of transitioning from the subsonic flight regime, through hypersonic flight with a single aircraft.

Lockheed Martin told Aviation Week it has found a way to use existing turbine engines, and by lowering the operating speed of the scramjet, make a transition to hypersonic speeds possible.

The aerospace company says it may have a scaled demonstrator of the SR-72 technology flying by 2023. That airplane would be smaller, about the size of the current F-22 fighter and would be optionally piloted. The SR-72 could enter service by 2030.

At the Defense Industry Executive Committee on December 15th 2010; it has been decided to start contract negotiations with TAI in order to implement the conceptual design activities for Jet Trainer and Fighter Aircraft to the requirements of Turkish Air Force’s (TurAF) for 2020’s.

On August 23rd 2011 the contract has been signed between The Undersecretariat for the Defense Industry (SSM) and TAI and the project has been initiated on September 29th 2011.
For a period of 2 years, based on the Turkish Air Force’s Jet Trainer and Fighter Aircaft requirements the following activities will be studied:

- Determining TurAF future Operational Requirements
- Requirement analysis studies
- Conceptual design of the aircraft and systems
- Researching the National Capacity and Capabilities.
- International Corporation models

At the end of the contract, the schedule and the budget of the development program will be estimated and submitted to SSM and TurAF for the further decisions.
