Including female artists from overseas, FTIsland is only the third act to take #1 with a debut album, after BoA in 2002 and t.A.T.u. in 2003.

On the single charts, KAT-TUN’s 15th single “WHITE” sold nearly 151,000 copies to lead the way. So far, all 15 of their singles have been number-one hits. Combined with their 5 number-one albums, they now have a total of 20 consecutive chart-topping releases (singles and albums).

AKB48: “Everyday, Kachusha” almost sells 1 million in one day, Oshima Yuko leads election
Posted on May 25, 2011 by tokyograph

AKB48’s 21st single, “Everyday, Kachusha,” is on its way to becoming the group’s biggest hit yet. Their previous single “Sakura no Ki ni Narou” sold 942,479 copies in its first week, but Oricon reports that “Everyday, Kachusha” has sold a staggering 942,475 copies on its first day alone.

Record stores were prepared for the onslaught, as 1.45 million copies went out with the single’s first shipment, compared to 1.10 million copies for “Sakura no Ki ni Narou.”

As long as the sales numbers for the rest of the week keep up, “Everyday, Kachusha” will likely set some new records. The first-week sales of “Sakura no Ki ni Narou” already ranks as the 6th highest in history, but AKB48 now has a chance to become 1st. As it stands, the top five are:

Namonaki Uta – Mr.Children - 1,208,000
Addicted to You – Utada Hikaru - 1,068,000
Dango 3 Kyoudai – Hayami Kentaro, Shigemori Ayumi, Himawari Kids & Dango Gasshoudan – 1,026,000
Winter, again – GLAY - 956,000
LOVE PHANTOM – B'z - 951,000

AKB48 are almost guaranteed to finish the week at #2 (and #1 for a female artist), but taking #1 will depend on their remaining momentum. Fortunately, they also happen to be in the middle of a concert revival series and their 3rd Senbatsu election (for their 22nd single), which means that sales will likely continue to be strong.

Speaking of the Senbatsu election, the votes have been counted for the first day. As of the announcement on May 25, tens of thousands of votes have already been cast, with the largest amount going to last year’s winner, Oshima Yuko. At 17,156 votes, she has a margin of roughly 700 votes over last year’s #2, Maeda Atsuko (16,452 votes). Kashiwagi Yuki, who ended up at #8 last year, is currently in 3rd with 12,056 votes.

Ando Yuko cancels concerts due to pregnancy
Posted on May 25, 2011 by tokyograph

The management of singer Ando Yuko (34) announced on her website that she is canceling four upcoming concerts, but the company also delivered some happy news: she is currently expecting her first child.

Ando is in the middle of a nationwide acoustic tour that started on May 7. According to her management, the tour was initially decided due to Ando’s strong desire to sing. Although her health was stable at first, she became ill after her concert in Saga on May 22. Because of that, her management decided to halt four concerts scheduled for May 28 (Gifu), May 29 (Ishikawa), June 11 (Ehime), and June 12 (Hiroshima).

Ando’s other two concerts in Ibaraki on June 4 and Tokyo on June 19 are still currently planned to proceed, since those will apparently not pose much of a physical burden in her current situation.

Her management has not offered any other details about her pregnancy, such as when the child is due or whether Ando is now married.

“Shinzanmono” movie announced for 2012
Posted on May 25, 2011 by tokyograph

The “Shinzanmono” drama series is getting a movie next year. Doi Nobuhiro is directing the film, which is tentatively titled “Kirin no Tsubasa: Gekijoban Shinzanmono.” Abe Hiroshi (46) will return in the starring role, along with Mizobata Junpei (21) and Kuroki Meisa (22).

“Shinzanmono” is an adaptation of Higashino Keigo’s “Kyoichiro Kaga” mystery novels. The original television series aired in the spring of 2010 and was based on the 8th book, also titled “Shinzanmono.” This past January, the series got a special episode, based on the 7th book, “Akai Yubi.” Now, the movie will cover the 9th book, “Kirin no Tsubasa,” which was just published two months ago in March.

Tanaka Lena (31) and Yamazaki Tsutomu (74), who both appeared in the “Akai Yubi” special, will also return for the movie.

Filming started on May 12 and is expected to finish in early July. Currently, “Kirin no Tsubasa” is planned for release in January 2012.
