KAT-TUN cancels Bangkok concert
Sat, May 15, 2010 (11:33pm EDT)

Johnny's Jimusho announced on Saturday that KAT-TUN's concert in Bangkok, Thailand, has been indefinitely postponed due to the political unrest in the country.

Recent clashes between the National United Front of Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) and the police have been escalating in violence, leading to many injuries and deaths.

KAT-TUN's upcoming Asia tour was scheduled to start with a concert in Bangkok on July 31, followed by two shows in Seoul on August 6-7 and two shows in Taipei on August 27-28. Although the Bangkok concert has been suspended, the other four concerts will go on as planned.

A similar situation happened in 2006, when an Arashi concert in Bangkok had to be canceled due to the coup d'état in Thailand.

Aya Omasa stars in "Usotsuki Mi-kun to Kowareta Ma-chan"
Sun, May 16, 2010 (12:06am EDT)

Actress Aya Omasa (19), who recently gained much attention for her role as the heroine in the "Yamato Nadeshiko Shichihenge" drama series, has been cast as the star of an upcoming movie. She will play the lead in the adaptation of "Usotsuki Mi-kun to Kowareta Ma-chan," directed by Natsuki Seta.

Based on a suspenseful light novel by Hitoma Iruma, the film was first announced last month without details. The original story is set in a rural town where two siblings suddenly disappear. The main characters are a boy named Mi-kun (played by 17-year-old Shota Sometani) and a girl named Ma-chan (Omasa), who was involved in a traumatizing incident several years earlier. The two childhood friends meet again and begin living together, but for some reason, the missing siblings are at Ma-chan's house.

The character of Ma-chan is described as being normally quiet, but whose personality completely changes when she is with Mi-kun. The production staff reportedly wanted an actress similar to Kou Shibasaki (28), and Omasa was unanimously chosen by the staff during the auditions for the part.

Besides Omasa and Sometani, the cast features Kyoka Suzuki (41) and Tomoko Tabata (29). "Usotsuki Mi-kun to Kowareta Ma-chan" is expected to open in theaters in 2011.

TOKYO —

Actress Meisa Kuroki, 21, will perform her first live concert on May 22 at the “Girls Award 2010” fashion event to be held in Yoyogi National Gymnasium. The actress made her singing debut in June 2008, and Kuroki reportedly has high expectations for the long-awaited performance. “I want to knock them off their feet,” she said of her fans, “and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone singing and dancing.”

Yasuoka Rikiya Back on His Feet

May 18, 2010

Actor Yasuoka Rikiya (62, photo left) has made a tentative return to work after a four-year struggle with illness. Yesterday he appeared on the TV Asahi talk show "Tetsuko no Heya" and spoke about his battle with Guillain-Barre syndrome, an autoimmune disorder affecting the peripheral nervous system.

He first noticed signs of a problem four years ago. "One day, when I tried to stand up, I collapsed like a jellyfish," he said. He found he had no strength in the arms and legs and was diagnosed with the condition days later. "My body was numb and I felt like I was being compressed. It was scary." He was also found to have a respiratory problem and was put on an artificial respirator. He spent the best part of two years confined to bed looking "like a dog's breakfast," a condition he was too embarrassed to let anyone but his family see. He has yet to make a full recovery but can hold a cup with both hands and can walk with the aid of a hydraulic harness and a cane.

'The Cove' to be screened in Japan from June

Wednesday 19th May, 07:03 AM JST

TOKYO —

‘‘The Cove,’’ the Oscar-winning U.S. documentary on a controversial dolphin hunt in a Japanese town, will be screened by at least 26 movie theaters across Japan from next month, the distributor of the film said Tuesday.

Unplugged Inc said the screening will start in Japan at Theater N Shibuya and Cinemart Roppongi, both in Tokyo, on June 26. The distributor added that theaters in at least 15 other prefectures, including Hokkaido, Kanagawa, Osaka, Hiroshima, Fukuoka and Okinawa, will follow but gave no details about when they will start showing the film.

The company said it is still negotiating with other theaters for possible screening.

The film, mostly shot in Taiji, Wakayama Prefecture, partly with hidden cameras, won the 2010 Academy Award for best documentary but stirred criticism in Japan with some arguing that it has factual errors.

The distributor faced the possibility of canceling the planned screening of the film in Japan due to strong opposition from the town of Taiji, its fishery association and other groups.

‘‘While there are some voices against the decision to screen the film, the majority of opinions are supportive and many of them say ‘let audiences judge for themselves,’‘’ an Unplugged official said.

Kaori Manabe countersued by management agency
Tue, May 18, 2010 (11:32am EDT)

Talento Kaori Manabe (29) has just been hit with a countersuit by her management agency, Avilla. The suit, filed on Monday, is seeking 300 million yen in damages for alleged breach of contract.

In December, Manabe had filed a lawsuit against her agency, seeking to have her contract canceled after the company's president was arrested for tax evasion, and authorities searched Manabe's home for potential evidence. Her battle with Avilla escalated in March when the company publicly suggested that Manabe herself was also guilty of tax evasion. At the time, it was reported that Avilla was considering launching a countersuit.

According to the suit, Manabe notified the agency in September that she wanted to cancel her contract. However, she also refused to carry out work that had already been scheduled for this year. A company representative said that those job contracts totaled about 188 million yen, and overall her breach of contract constitutes more than 600 million yen.

Manabe's lawyer said that they have not yet seen the details of the countersuit.

A source close to Yaguchi said that their meeting was like love at first sight. Although Nakamura is nearly 48 centimeters taller than Yaguchi, the height difference is apparently not a problem.
