Wed, May 19, 2010 (10:21am EDT)

KAT-TUN achieved their 12th consecutive #1 single this week, selling over 230,000 copies of their new song "Going!" This continues their streak starting from their debut single four years ago, and ties them once again with fellow boy band NEWS.

TOKYO —

Illusionist Princess Tenko recounted her memories of U.S. pop star and her one-time co-performer Michael Jackson this week, including the surprise she had when she discovered he used felt pens for his makeup.

‘‘He had many pens and even asked if I wanted to use one for myself,’’ Tenko said during the opening ceremony for an exhibition in Tokyo featuring some 120 memorial items belonging to Jackson, who died June 25 last year.

‘‘He was special and entertaining,’’ Tenko said, recalling that he was interested in making ice cream using hippo’s saliva and had asked if she liked the idea.

The event ‘‘MJ46 Keep on Loving’’ displays half of the items during the first period through Sunday and the remaining half between May 24 and 31 at Tokyo’s upscale Roppongi Hills complex.

Some of the exhibits will be also made public in Chatan, Okinawa Prefecture, from May 25 to 30 and in Nagoya from June 5 to 8.

Tomoya Nagase stars in new Kudokan drama
Wed, May 19, 2010 (7:10pm EDT)

TOKIO's Tomoya Nagase (31) is once again teaming up with screenwriter Kankuro Kudo (39) for a new drama series this summer. This will be their third one together, after "Ikebukuro West Gate Park" (2000) and "Tiger & Dragon" (2005).

Titled "Unubore Deka" ("Conceited Detective"), the show is an original comedy about an unusual detective (Nagase) who has a habit of falling in love with every female suspect, and his conceit leads him to believe that they are also in love with him. When he finds evidence of their crimes, he confronts them with an arrest warrant and a marriage proposal at the same time, giving them a choice between the two. Although his actual name will apparently not be mentioned during the show, he is known to everyone as "Unubore" for his conceit.

TBS says that they are lining up big-name actresses to play the guest role of the suspect for each episode. The network also hinted that there's even a case where the guest will be a male actor.

The regular supporting cast features Toma Ikuta (25) as an actor who is Unubore's friend, Mika Nakashima (27) as Unubore's ex-girlfriend, and Toshiyuki Nishida (62) as Unubore's father. The detective frequents a bar where he and a group of acquaintances are known as the "Unubore 5," consisting of Nagase, Ikuta, Jun Kaname (29), Ken Yahagi (38), and Mitsugoro Bando (54).

"Unubore Deka" will air on Friday nights at 10:00pm, starting in July.

Saturday 22nd May, 06:00 AM JST

TOKYO —

Actress Akiko Yada this week made her first public performance in four years, joining actor Kenji Sakaguchi, 34, in Odaiba for the preview screening of their Fuji Television special drama, “Keiji Narusawa Ryo: Tokyo Terror, Shijo Saiaku no 24jikan” (Detective Ryo Narusawa: Tokyo Terror: The Worst 24 Hours in History).

The show follows a tough detective, played by Sawaguchi, and his partner, a female detective played by Yada, on a 24-hour mission to stop a terror plot that threatens the lives of Tokyo’s 13 million citizens.

Sakaguchi took pride in the hard work he put into his action-packed role, explaining, “I performed the part with the image of a zombie in my head. For the injuries, I studied Bruce Willis in the ‘Die Hard’ movies and tried to make it as realistic as I could.”

Yada, 31, who had dropped out of sight since her divorce from ex-actor Manabu Oshio last August, was greeted with cheers and calls of “Yada-san!” as she appeared on stage. “I really pulled myself together and gave it all I could,” she said. “The shoot was only 13 days, but every one of those days was really jam-packed.”
