Girls Go Hysterical In School As If Possessed
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan – Girls who believed were possessed by devils made a ruckus in a school here yesterday.

Fourteen female students went hysterical in the morning at an all-girls school in the capital as the school cancelled all classes and sent students home.

The first incident happened at about 8am at the Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri (STPRI) and an hour later all roads leading to the school were jammed with vehicles as anxious parents rushed to pick up their children.

The Ministry of Education acted swiftly and issued a press statement. It acknowledged the incident and said it was being tackled accordingly with cooperation from everyone, especially parents and guardians.

The ministry also announced that in light of the incident, the students of STPRI will be given a day off Saturday, July 30, in order to settle things. The school will reopen as usual on Monday, August 1, the statement added.

However, no one knows or has any idea what triggered the hysteria.

The Borneo Bulletin was told the first hysterical incident happened on Thursday, July 21.

However, the matter got worse last Monday when nine more students were affected. On Tuesday it was the turn of four other students while on Wednesday another three students went hysterical.

Religious teachers and bomohs were dispatched to the school every time students became hysterical.

Nurses from the Raja Isteri Pg Anak Saleha Hospital and ambulances were also rushed to the school.

The affected students reportedly went into a state of frenzy all of a sudden as if they were possessed. They reportedly shouted at the top of their voices and rolled on the floor. It took a number of persons to control them.

Yesterday, many students that went into a state managed to calm down after a while and were attended to by nurses inside ambulances.

But some students took a longer time to come out of their "possessed" state and some religious teachers were seen trying to keep the affected students under control.

Parents called for immediate effort to prevent the phenomenon recurring. Some parents told the Bulletin they have decided not to send their children to school for the time being until the mystery of students going hysterical is solved.

Officers from the Ministry of Education told the Bulletin that parents should not be too anxious as the situation was under control.

More Students Go Hysterical
By Azlan Othman & Hj Minor Absah

Bandar Seri Begawan - The mystery phenomenon that has affected students from two schools in the capital is showing no signs of abating. And rumours spreading wildly through the short message service (SMS) are apparently sowing more confusion in the minds of the public.

Yesterday, more students were hit by the unexplained hysteria but this time at Sayyidina Hussain Secondary School in Jerudong.

It all began with a Form 4 student returning to the classroom from the restroom at around 10am, according to a teacher from the school. When other students started getting hysterical as well, the school asked all the students to assemble at the hall. But as the situation threatened to get out of control, the school called the parents and asked  them take their children home, the Bulletin was told.

The Royal Brunei Police Force last night warned that anyone found guilty of spreading such malicious SMS would be dealt with accordingly.

Following the hysteria cases that have occurred in schools in the country affecting several students in the past weeks, the police in a press statement advised the public not to be influenced with false rumours spreading through the short message service.

The police warned it would not hesitate to investigate false rumours spread through the short message service, which is a criminal offence and offenders could face fine and imprisonment.

The statement added spreading false rumours is an offence under Section 34 and Section 35 of the Public Order Act, Chapter 148 and offenders could face jail and fine, if found guilty.

SMS criss-crossed yesterday concerning the Jerudong school incident. SMS rumours claiming that cases of hysteria occurring at a government office at the Old Airport, another two schools in the capital and in Gadong were also spread, which invited the warning from the police.

The public relations officer at the Ministry of Religious Affairs last night denied giving any instruction(which was spread through SMS) that their officers have instructed people not to wander around after midnight (August 18) because STPRI's `ghost gate' or "Guris" would be opened.

Meanwhile, the principal and deputy principal of STPRI School, in an interview with the Bulletin yesterday, refuted allegations that the school was conducting a ceremony to chase out evil spirits last night. The school principal said they too were inundated with calls concerning the ceremony.

The ceremony, according to SMS rumours, was to counter-act the spirits that have surrounded the building since the first hysteria was detected in July.

"This is beyond the knowledge of the school. The schoolteachers also received SMS saying well-known `bomohs', would be called to chase the spirits away.It is -just-an assumption, to frighten the students and their guardians, he said.

The principal admitted that various efforts are being made such as performing Hajat prayers, recitation of the Holy Quran and various religious activities to stabilise the situation at school.

A large number of curious onlookers were seen last night near the school.
The mystery phenomenon has become the topic of discussion nowadays.

Some parents have voiced their concerns especially with examinations just around the corner and called for more assimilation of religious teachings at schools to wipe out any activities, which are against the teachings of Islam. --           Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Mystery Phenomenon Hits Students Again
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan - After a relatively incident-free Monday, four Form Five students of Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri (STPRI) went hysterical again yesterday leaving many parents concerned as they called for efforts to be stepped up to contain the mystery phenomenon.

The school confirmed the incident and so did an official from the Ministry of Education, who said that the situation "is not as bad as what it was last week".

Following the first incident on July 21, more than a dozen students were hit by the strange phenomenon last week, which led the ministry to close the school for a day last Saturday.

Students who went hysterical were reportedly seen shouting at the top of their lungs before collapsing.

Their unexplained behaviour reportedly lasted from a few minutes to half an hour and the girls needed assistance to calm them down.

Worried parents called up the Borneo Bulletin urging for an all-out effort to combat the phenomenon.

"I did not send my child to school Monday. When I heard that nothing happened Monday, I let my daughter go to school today (yesterday).

After today's incident, I am not sure what to do tomorrow," a father told the Bulletin yesterday.

"Religious talks must be held to calm the students so they would not be misled by the phenomenon. Explanations must be given to them on the issue be it from the religious standpoint or based on scientific interpretations," a concerned parent said.

Parents said students were being fed with theories by many including their friends, which may not be right, and urged the relevant authority to help calm the situation. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

STPRI Girls Return After Bomohs Shoo Spirit
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan - About 700 female students of Sekolah T inggi Perempuan Raja Isteri in the capital returned to their classes yesterday after a few days' break to regain their composure after a hysteria incident hit the school more than a week ago.

They returned to a calmer school environment yesterday and there were no reports of hysteria affecting any of the students anymore.

After the incident in which 14 students went hysterical last Thursday, the Ministry of Education told all the girls to go home and announced a school break last Saturday.

The Borneo Bulletin was told that the four-day break was used by the religious teachers and "bomohs" to chase away the "evil spirits" that had been allegedly disturbing the female students for more than a week.

"It seemed that the religious teachers and bomohs have done their work so well in ensuring the `spirits' do not come again.

We hoped that the `evil ones' will never return," said some parents.

Many parents told the Bulletin that the "spirits" disturbed the students after they were allegedly "called" by some girls through a game of "spirits of the coins".

However, some people dismissed the claims, saying that hysteria amongst young females was a common phenomenon all over the world.

The hysteria incident broke out at the school on July 21. The situation worsened on July 25 when nine students became hysterical. It was the turn of four female students to become hysterical last Tuesday, three last Wednesday and 14 last Thursday.

After the Thursday incident, the Ministry of Education moved swiftly by sending all the students home and giving them a break on Saturday.

It was also not the first time the school had experienced such a strange phenomenon. Cases of hysteria had affected students of the same school intermittently since the 1970's. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

The Ministry requested in its statement for the understanding and full support of parents and members of the public to work together so that teaching and learning can proceed with minimum interruption at the school.

Meanwhile, Borneo Bulletin Sunday hotline has been ringing non-stop with distraught parents inquiring about the situation.

The Sunday Bulletin at the scene to cover the planned religious talk was told by school staff manning the entrance that no one was allowed in.

They said only parents and guardians were allowed to go in as the mystery phenomena had struck the students again.
