A SHOE-IN? The roar of approval from the crowd made Shahir a clear-cut favourite from the start

LET it be stated that Akademi Fantasia (AF) remains, undoubtedly - the undisputed, most popular reality TV show on local TV. That is an undeniable fact.
Having said that, however, chinks in the armour of the onceuntouchable programme are now glaringly obvious, gaping weaknesses. Theprogramme that once rightfully held the bragging rights to the mostnumber of successful crossover talents into the mainstream market hasadmittedly been reduced to a branding exercise for the TV station.
That sinking feeling throughout weeks of endless flaming from fanswas justified with figures from official sources that placed theeighth season as a failure when it came to numbers.
The highest rating received for any concert (with the exception of the final) during season eight was during the introductory Tirai Akdemi Fantasia with a peak of 835,943.
AF7 achieved 1,119,390 (Konsert 2), AF6 - 1,382,188 (Konsert 3), AF5 - 1,045,197 (Konsert 2), AF4 - 1,196,416 (Konsert 9) and AF3 - 1,043,758 (Konsert 8).

POOR REVELATION: AF8 garnered a total of 3.75 million SMS votes

Looking at the numbers for the last five seasons, AF8 is a failure. The highs don't match up, and the lows reached deeper than ever before. Take into account the lowest ratings. AF8 registered the lowest rating during Konsert 7 with 590,012, a painfully low number compared to other lows for AF7 (Konsert 8 - 786,810), AF6 (Konsert 9 - 946,168), AF5 (Konsert 9 - 916,244), AF4 - (Konsert 5 - 832,355) and AF3 (Konsert 1 - 603,680).
Despite the increase in subscribers (numbering over three millionfor 2010, according to some sources), not only has the figures ofviewers decreased for the weekly concerts, its appeal to Astrosubscribers in general may have also waned.
It held the lowest channel share ever among previous seasons with AF8 hitting bottom with Konsert 6 (32.45 per cent). Compare this to other seasons - AF7 (Konsert 8 - 44.1 per cent), AF6 - (Konsert 7 - 60.1 per cent), AF5 - (Konsert 9 -57.5 per cent), AF4 (Konsert 1 - 67.9 per cent) and AF3 (Konsert 1 - 73.3 per cent).
The production would like everyone to believe they have not taken ahit in numbers. In fact, unrevealed numbers were what they relied on toclaim that the show maintained its popularity.

The waning appeal of the show as based on comments and lack of cyberspace presence - something unique to AF here in Malaysia - compared to other shows, was brushed off. In fact, at the Press conference after the Debaran Akademi Fantasia on the fifth week, it was stated that they declared there was actually a 40 per cent increase for AF8 in viewership as compared to AF7.
Needless to say, whatever interpretation of figures they have made, the ones mentioned here are from the Nielsen television audiencemeasurement utilising the Arianna TV ratings analysis software.
So with these figures, perhaps it is time for concern. Especiallyfor Astro. If they are indeed staunch in their stand and unwavering inthe belief that AF is still a brand name to be reckonedwith, perhaps they can begin to clear the rot by ridding the dreadfulproduction team that has made the show a horrendous and extremely cheapimitation with the rip-off of the Idol format.
No glory can be claimed through figures, which were their last line of defense from criticisms of failure. AF8 averaged 798,632 viewers from nine concerts, still a far cry lower than any of the other five seasons for basis of comparison.
The final concert's viewership has not been released at Press time, but despite their arguments, one wonders if they even breached themillion mark, let alone meet AF7's grab of 1,242,192 viewers or 57.9 per cent channel share.
In terms of AFUNDI, or votes, the breakdown of past released figures have also put AF8 as the lowest ever in the history of the show. AF8 garnered a total of 3.75 million SMS votes as revealed on Saturday night. Still bottom of the barrel compared to figures from AF1 (4.5 million), AF2 (15 million), AF3 (10.9 million), AF4 (7.4 million), AF5 (6.6 million), AF6 (3.9 million), AF7 (5.5 million).
Are you still convinced AF8 is the best Akademi Fantasia ever?
Coincidence or pre-imposed?
CONTROVERSIES and complaints. That appears to define what AF8 has been about. And it rages on even after the show, with a dozen new singles rolling out almost simultaneously.
The grapevine of the local music community has been abuzz with talksof how so many new songs will be pushed on-air and whether Astrosubsidiary Era FM will be hard-selling the singles.
Astro Entertainment Sdn Bhd (AESB) executive director ZainirAminullah shrugged off the gossip and insists the promotion for the newsongs from the AF camp will not be sandwiched into a three-month period.

DIRA: Performed 'Ku Ada Kamu' (Edry KRU) and 'Tiru Macam Saya' (Sheila Majid)

"It will be stretched longer than the post-AF period. So in the case of this compilation to be released, we might continue way after that.
"As for Era, we cannot influence the station, so songs have to standon their own, but like I said before, the new songs of the finalistsare very radio-friendly."
During the Press conference, the issue of why Edry KRU remains thesole composer chosen, with five new tunes - and again it was repeatedthat they were the best of 30 compositions received.
Still when criticism was levied at the five new singles for thefinal performance - all penned by Edry of KRU, and principal NormanAbdul Halim's younger brother, Zainir merely shrugged off suggestionsof 'familiarity' with the tunes.

Kebahagiaan Dalam Perpisahan (performed by Shahir), Ku Ada Kamu (Adira), Kenapa? (Daus), RSVP (Maulana) and VIP (Iwan) bore some resemblance to many songs heard before.

Among songs suggested by some fans as being similar to the final five included Jangan Ada Benci (Casey), Lemon Tree (Fool's Garden), Hey Gadis (Samsons), Naturally (Selena), and If We Hold On Together (Diana Ross).
"Whether the songs resemble any other tunes, it is subjective," saidZainir firmly. "A lot of people would argue that a lot of songs thesedays sound like The Beatles anyway."
Ahmad Shahir Zawawi or Shahir was crowned the champion in alackluster finale at the Stadium Putra, Bukit Jalil on Saturday night. The 22-year-old drove off with a Peugeot 207, a trip to Hong KongDisneyland, a year's supply of Brand's Innershine, two flight ticketsto New York, an Arezeo Hoffman karaoke set, two watches from Hugo Boss,a Coway air purifier, a three-day two-night stay at D-CEO Village atD'Paradise Resort in Malacca, an LG Prada mobile phone and a trophy.

THE TOP 5: From left) Iwan, Daus, Shahir, Dira and Maulana had a tight competition

Shahir, who hails from Kampar, Perak was given a reprieve by being voted backin after being eliminated just a week before in the seventh week ofcompetition.

Shahir put up a decent showing of his performance of Kebahagiaan Dalam Perpisahan (Edry KRU) and Biru Mata Hitamku (originallyperformed by Wings). The roar of approval from the crowd made him aclear-cut favourite from the start - with others lacking any real shinealmost ensuring him the default winner.

Adira came in second to get a Satria Neo 1.6 CPS from Proton, aholiday trip voucher, an Arezzo Hoffman karaoke set, two watches fromHugo Boss, a Coway Air Purifier, a three-day two-night star at D-CEOVillage at D'Paradise Resort, Malacca, an LG Prada mobile phone and atrophy.
The sole female finalist Dira, performed Ku Ada Kamu (Edry KRU) and Tiru Macam Saya (Sheila Majid).
Third-placed Daus took home an Arezzo Hoffman karaoke set, a holidaytrip voucher, two watches by Hugo Boss, a Coway Air Purifier, athree-day two-night stay at D-CEO Village at D'Paradise Resort,Malacca, an LG Electronics mobile and a trophy, after performing Kenapa? (Edry KRU) and Doktor Pakar Cinta (Yusry).
Fourth and fifth-placed Maulana and Iwan received Kipling luggage and a trophy each for performing RSVP (Edry KRU) and Susun Silang Kata (Aizat) as well as VIP (Edry KRU) and Relaku Pujuk (Spider) respectively.
New angles needed for AF brand
HE'S known for maintaining a poker face throughout even the mostdifficult of Press conferences, and deftly manoeuvring his way aboutthe most difficult of questions.
Astro Entertainment Sdn Bhd (AESB) executive director Zainir Aminullah (below) brushed off the data pointing to the failure of AF8.
He called the figures merely "raw data", and insists "we can alwayslook at specifics." Shrewd as his answer are, however, it was indeedheartening to hear that Zainir admitted that, "AF as a brand, is tired, past its prime."
He refuses to crucify the production team which has been responsible for making the whole show a pale shadow of the Idol formatin every sense. This includes splitting the concert into two separateshows, making the other programme strictly a results show just like American Idol. The new format did not seem to go down well with fans.
Strangely enough, however, he did go to great lengths to explain that it was the split that caused lower numbers to tune in to Akademi Fantasia.
"People want to aim for the results. If we wanted, we could havedone that again and allowed the numbers to grow, but we didn't want todo that.
"That caused the concert figures to be lower."
Zainir however did not reveal whether Debaran Akademi Fantasia did any better than previous off-shoot programming on Sundays nor did he reveal any figures.
Maintaining his stand and in defence of the production's eccentricchoice of revamping the show, Zainir said the brand needed new angles.
"I think criticism has been fair, and it has been aggressive. Butmaybe next year, we'll do different things. One thing for sure is,nobody can expect us to go back to the old formula," he said.
"The essence of Akademi Fantasia is still the training, the struggle, the self-challenges and the drama we hope to bring out, whether it's Diari or Konsert or Debaran."

There is a constant need to keep changing things up, according to Zainir.
"We have to keep making changes, and whether we do it or not, wewill always have detractors. But we realise that, as a brand, it willdie out if we don't (make changes). It needs acceleration.
"And with that, we don't know what direction we will take with AF9."Not that there's any guarantee that there will be a next season, as herefuses to give any indication. However, word on the street is thatthere will be at least another season.
Zainir finds success even in the lowest of lows despite having the figures raised during the Press conference.
"The essence of why we wanted to do it this way, was to get a spreadfor our channel. If the slot were to enjoy more viewership, we mightmove Akademi Fantasia elsewhere."
He explained it's a global practise and that it was nothing unusual.Zainir went on to explain how the Sunday night slot has been a success, and continued to insist that it surpassed figures of AF7 though unable to provide the breakdown that indicated so.
"Whatever it is, it's important to note it has gone into its eighthseason. It is hard to sustain, and a challenge for programming andproduction but it still retains its spot as number one even with thecriticisms and the weaknesses which we acknowledge. "I admit it istiring to keep up with the pace and keep things on the same pace."
Having said that, he still insists it was a great final concert thatwas tight and well executed. So the question now remains, is Akademi Fantasia still aimed at recruiting fresh new talents, or now merely a victim of its own past successes in being a pawn for business?

Daus membawa pulang hadiah set karaoke Arezzo Hoffmantajaan Arezzo dan beberapa hadiah lain termasuk telefon mudah alih LGPrada tajaan LG Electronics.

"Suasananya masih terlalu baru buat saya.

Mengenai hadiah kemenangan diraih, Shahir berkata, perkara itubelum difikirkan lagi.

"Saya tak sesuai buat lagu rancak kerana perlu diiringi tarian.

ABG YANG BERTANGGUNG JAWAB (teringat mak ayah shahir.. rendah diri)

Third-placed Daus took home an Arezzo Hoffman karaoke set, a holiday trip voucher, two watches by Hugo Boss, a Coway Air Purifier, a three-day two-night stay at D-CEO Village at D'Paradise Resort, Malacca, an LG Electronics mobile and a trophy, after performing Kenapa? (Edry KRU) and Doktor Pakar Cinta (Yusry). Fourth and fifth-placed Maulana and Iwan received Kipling luggage and a trophy each for performing RSVP (Edry KRU) and Susun Silang Kata (Aizat) as well as VIP (Edry KRU) and Relaku Pujuk (Spider) respectively.

New angles needed for AF brand
HE'S known for maintaining a poker face throughout even the most difficult of Press conferences, and deftly manoeuvring his way about the most difficult of questions. Astro Entertainment Sdn Bhd (AESB) executive director Zainir Aminullah (below) brushed off the data pointing to the failure of AF8. He called the figures merely "raw data", and insists "we can always look at specifics." Shrewd as his answer are, however, it was indeed heartening to hear that Zainir admitted that, "AF as a brand, is tired, past its prime." He refuses to crucify the production team which has been responsible for making the whole show a pale shadow of the Idol format in every sense. This includes splitting the concert into two separate shows, making the other programme strictly a results show just like American Idol. The new format did not seem to go down well with fans.
Strangely enough, however, he did go to great lengths to explain that it was the split that caused lower numbers to tune in to Akademi Fantasia. "People want to aim for the results. If we wanted, we could have done that again and allowed the numbers to grow, but we didn't want to do that. "That caused the concert figures to be lower." Zainir however did not reveal whether Debaran Akademi Fantasia did any better than previous off-shoot programming on Sundays nor did he reveal any figures. Maintaining his stand and in defence of the production's eccentric choice of revamping the show, Zainir said the brand needed new angles. "I think criticism has been fair, and it has been aggressive. But maybe next year, we'll do different things. One thing for sure is, nobody can expect us to go back to the old formula," he said. "The essence of Akademi Fantasia is still the training, the struggle, the self-challenges and the drama we hope to bring out, whether it's Diari or Konsert or Debaran." There is a constant need to keep changing things up, according to Zainir. "We have to keep making changes, and whether we do it or not, we will always have detractors. But we realise that, as a brand, it will die out if we don't (make changes). It needs acceleration. "And with that, we don't know what direction we will take with AF9." Not that there's any guarantee that there will be a next season, as he refuses to give any indication. However, word on the street is that there will be at least another season. Zainir finds success even in the lowest of lows despite having the figures raised during the Press conference. "The essence of why we wanted to do it this way, was to get a spread for our channel. If the slot were to enjoy more viewership, we might move Akademi Fantasia elsewhere." He explained it's a global practise and that it was nothing unusual. Zainir went on to explain how the Sunday night slot has been a success, and continued to insist that it surpassed figures of AF7 though unable to provide the breakdown that indicated so. "Whatever it is, it's important to note it has gone into its eighth season. It is hard to sustain, and a challenge for programming and production but it still retains its spot as number one even with the criticisms and the weaknesses which we acknowledge. "I admit it is tiring to keep up with the pace and keep things on the same pace." Having said that, he still insists it was a great final concert that was tight and well executed. So the question now remains, is Akademi Fantasia still aimed at recruiting fresh new talents, or now merely a victim of its own past successes in being a pawn for business?

Shahir tetap merendah diri

Iamampu dibuktikan Shahir apabila dia meraih undian AF Masuk palingtinggi sebanyak 68.6 peratus sekali gus menewaskan pelajar lain.

Ditambah lagi, saya berjaya mengumpul lampu hijau terbanyakdan mengatasi peserta lain.

Saya akanbelajar bersungguh-sungguh kerana tahu mutu vokal tak sebagus pelajarlain,” katanya.

Iwan pula mengakui prestasi yangditonjolkannya setiap minggu merudum kerana masalah tekak dihadapi.
